Critical Care Fellowship

Welcome from our Critical Care Fellowship Director

Welcome to the Anesthesia Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Louisville.

Myself, along with the additional critical care faculty, take utmost pride in our fellowship and strive to provide the highest commitment and support to our fellows, ensuring a comprehensive, multidisciplinary experience grounded in collegiality and camaraderie.

The diverse training, clinical exposure, and educational opportunity coupled with the wonderful promise of living in a city like Louisville, makes this a truly one of a kind experience.

On behalf of the faculty of the Division of Critical Care, thank you for your interest in our program and we look forward to seeing you.

The University of Louisville Anesthesia Critical Care Fellowship Program is an ACGME accredited program designed to provide fellows with advanced knowledge, skills, and clinical experiences in critical care medicine to foster the practice of multidisciplinary critical care.

Our mission is to provide physicians the best quality of training in clinical care, and discovery in a collegial, academic environment. Physicians will develop the skills, knowledge, and expertise necessary to become not only skilled clinicians, but educators, researchers, and leaders flourishing in any critical care environment.

The Anesthesia Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Louisville is a one-year program which provides a comprehensive, diverse critical care training opportunity in the region’s major tertiary referral center and only level one trauma center.

The primary site of training is at the University of Louisville Hospital with additional training at adjacent Jewish Hospital. The fellow is expected to spend a minimum of nine months in the care of critically ill patients in ICUs or transitional care units; the remainder of training time must be spent in elective clinical activities, research, or scholarly activity relevant to critical care.

The fellow who completes the program will be well versed in evidence-based critical care practice and will be eligible for and expected to successfully complete the American Board of Anesthesiology Examination for Certification in Critical Care Medicine or the equivalent with the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Core rotations for the fellowship include the CVICU, Neuro ICU, Trauma/Surgical ICU, Transplant, and Burn ICU. In addition to the nine months of core ICU rotations, the fellowship offers a vast array of electives such as TTE/TEE, palliative care, MICU, and nutrition. In the ICUs, the fellows will be responsible for participating in multidisciplinary rounds, formulating care plans, and facilitating communication between the critical care team and surgical services, consultants, and family members.

Fellows are encouraged to pursue academic projects during their fellowship including a quality improvement initiative, clinical or basic science research, and participation in anesthesia and critical care grand grounds.
