The UofL School of Medicine is comprised of over 900 employees who work hard every day to further the mission and goals of every single department, division and unit within our school.

Dean Ganzel is proud to announce the 2021 STAFF EXCELLENCE AWARDSThis year’s award categories are:

UofL School of Medicine - Employee of the Year Award [$500.00 Award]
Selection is based on an individual’s consistent demonstration of commitment to advance the mission and vision of the School of Medicine, high achievement, and performance excellence.  Including:

  • Exhibited commitment to serve the unit, students, the general public and university colleagues
  • A sustained high-level of productivity and consistent quality of work
  • A high degree of demonstrated initiative in the performance of functions
  • A display of exceptional dependability
  • Effective relationships with other
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities
  • Enhancement of the university’s image through professional publications and public service

Nominees need not meet all seven criteria for the award, but the nomination should recognize the employee’s service orientation.

UofL School of Medicine - Team of the Year Award [$500.00 Award]
Selection is based on a team or group’s high level of performance or achievement to advance the mission of the School of Medicine.

UofL School of Medicine - Dean’s Lifetime Achievement Award [$500.00 Award]
This award recognizes a long-term employee of the School of Medicine who has exhibited ongoing performance excellence through at least 15 years of service to the school.  Including:

  • Exhibited commitment to serve the unit, students, the general public and university colleagues
  • A sustained high-level of productivity and consistent quality of work
  • A high degree of demonstrated initiative in the performance of functions
  • A display of exceptional dependability
  • Effective relationships with other
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities
  • Enhancement of the university’s image through professional publications and public service

UofL School of Medicine – Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Engagement Award [$500.00 Award]
This award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated the ability to promote the values of anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion within the School of Medicine.  The awardee will have demonstrated merit not based only on the functions of their job, but also on an extraordinary commitment to anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion beyond what would be considered required for satisfactory job performance.  Exemplary anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion engagement may include effective guidance and mentoring, critical thinking to support active and reflective learning for students, advocacy on behalf of anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

UofL School of Medicine - Heart of the School Award [$300.00 Award]
This award recognizes the contributions of an individual who actively supports camaraderie and a welcoming environment within their department/division/unit and who works to foster a climate that makes the School of Medicine a great place to learn and work.

Performance Excellence Awards [Awards of $300.00 for each category]
UofL School of Medicine Staff Award for Performance Excellence in an Administrative Office
UofL School of Medicine Staff Award for Performance Excellence in a Basic Science Department
UofL School of Medicine Academic Staff Award for Performance Excellence in a Clinical Department

Selection is based on excellence in job performance. Including:

  • Exhibited commitment to serve the unit, students, the general public and university colleagues
  • A sustained high-level of productivity and consistent quality of work
  • A high degree of demonstrated initiative in the performance of functions
  • A display of exceptional dependability
  • Effective relationships with other
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities
  • Enhancement of the university’s image through professional publications and public service


    Eligibility Requirements
    – In order for an individual to be eligible for an award, they must:

    • be employed by the School of Medicine at least .8 FTE
    • be employed in the department for which they are being nominated for a minimum of 12 consecutive months [a minimum of 15-years of SOM employment is required for Dean’s Lifetime Achievement Award]
    • not be on a Performance Improvement Plan
    • Past winners cannot be eligible to win another award within a 5-year period.

    Nomination Process:
    To make a nomination, complete the on-line Nomination Form by clicking here.

    A Supervisor Support Form must be submitted before a nomination can be considered complete. The Supervisor Support Form can be accessed hereIf the nominator is not the employee’s supervisor, the nominator will need to coordinate with the nominee’s supervisor to have the Supervisor Support Form completed and submitted. Supervisor Support Forms submitted by anyone other than the nominee’s actual supervisor cannot be accepted. In any instance where a nominee reports to more than one individual, the form must be signed by the supervisor with primary responsibility for completing the nominee’s annual evaluation.

    When accessing either form, if you receive a request to login, use your UofL ULink login and password.

    Only nominations which include a nomination form, at least one letter of support, and a Supervisor Support Form will be considered for judging. 

    The nomination period will close at 5:00pm, Friday, December 17th.  

    Due to processing and judging time frames, late nominations cannot be considered.   

    2020 nomination submissions, for nominees who did not win an award, may be re-submitted for consideration in 2021. 

    Awards will be presented in February 2022.
