Study Synopsis:
Persistent, high rates of smoking in the state of Kentucky prompted the Kentucky Cancer Program (KCP) to develop and implement an intervention targeting clinicians’ capacity and willingness to increase and improve their smoking cessation practices with patients. This study measures the impact of KCP’s program, Providers Practice Prevention: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence, specifically analyzing data on changes in clinicians’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding tobacco cessation in response to the program. The study collects data from three time points—before the intervention, immediately afterward, and one year later—and includes clinicians in various specialties, all of whom may have a significant impact on patient tobacco cessation rates. Data for each clinician type, such as physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, psychologists, dental hygienists, and others, are analyzed separately to determine the specific advantages and drawbacks of the program for each group.
