This conference will investigate the history of the first party struggle in the United States and its implications for our understanding of a free society. This struggle among the Federalists of 1788 pitted the "Friends of Liberty" (the Jeffersonian opposition) against the pro-administration "Friends of Order" and was an integral part of the American Founding.
