A Fulbright Powerhouse.
Since 2003, UofL has had more Fulbright Scholars than all other Kentucky public universities combined. The CEHD has had two Fulbrights (2011 and 2013) both were graduates of the Elementary Education degree program. Olivia Kaiser participated in the CEHD's 2013 International Teaching Experience in Belize before heading off to Korea to begin her Fulbright Teaching Scholarship.
Home to Academic Superstars:
In fall 2013, UofL welcomed the most academically gifted incoming freshmen class in history. Graduates from the CEHD have excelled in their own classrooms and many have received local and national awards: five CEHD grads in the past five years have received WHAS11 ExCEL Awards for exemplary teaching; a CEHD MAT Secondary Education grad was selected to receive the Milken National Educator Award in 2009; seven CEHD teacher education alumni recently completed National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification, a very prestigious achievement in teacher education.
Known for the Grawemeyer Award.
UofL's Grawemeyer Award in Education is given to education leaders who inspire new ideas. The $100,000 prize most recently went to Diane Ravitch, for her work, "The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice are Undermining Education."
Innovators in Education.
The CEHD's clinical model of teacher preparation was awarded $500,000 from the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) to expand the program at Westport Middle School. The model has been highly successful because it pairs students with experienced teachers to give them intensive classroom experiences.
Developing Future Leaders.
The CEHD offers a superintendent certification program that provides a strong mentoring experience for school superintendent candidates. The CEHD is the lead facilitator for the National Institute for School Leadership (NISL), a nationally recognized professional development program for principals. Partners in this program are the Kentucky Department of Education, Jefferson County Public Schools, Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, and Advanced Education. In addition, members of the CEHD faculty serve on the Next Generation Educational Leaders Initiative Design Team.
Recognized for Excellence in Teaching, Service and Research.
The CEHD was selected by the Kentucky Department of Education as a site for the Center for Learning Excellence, as we have a long history of assisting low performing school districts and improving student outcomes.
Boosting Literacy in Kentucky.
Along with a center dedicated to improving state-wide literacy rates, our Summer Boost Program helped local children work on and maintain reading skills during the summer. The program included a writing project to help teachers hone their proficiency in teaching literacy and writing. In addition, we now offer a new master's level program that gives teachers broad-based exposure to diversity and cultural literacy.
Strengthening Partnerships Throughout Our Community.
The CEHD has become a hub for building community partnership and teamwork. We work closely with the Kentucky Department of Education, Jefferson County Public Schools, the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education and the university community on policy issues affecting P-12 and higher education. The University's Signature Partnership program has proven to be a tremendous success at J.B. Atkinson Academy for Excellence and has been expanded to other local elementary, middle and high schools.
