International Teaching Experience: Ecuador

PROGRAM LEADERS:
Dr. Meg Hancock is an associate professor and oversees student success and academic affairs in the CEHD. Aside from being a professional nerd, Meg enjoys traveling, drinking coffee, playing in the dirt (camping, mountain biking, yard work), and watching people cross to the other side of the street when she’s walking her pit-bull dogs.

Dr. Ginevra Courtade is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Special Education, Early Childhood, and Prevention Science. Ginevra enjoys traveling, cooking, reading, and new opportunities. She loves dogs and just adopted two!  

EcuadorABOUT THE PROGRAM: This program focuses on learning, sharing, and working collaboratively with international teachers and CEHD faculty to develop appropriate lesson plans to address the diverse needs of individual K-8 students in rural Ecuadorian schools. CEHD students will work with Ecuadorian students and teachers in the villages of Zuleta, La Merced, and La Esperanza for six days. In addition to teaching, CEHD students will also will get first-hand international service learning experience volunteering with the Kentucky-Ecuador Partners to provide desperately needed dental education and preventative dental care.

Additionally, CEHD students will get the chance to explore historic Quito and enjoy Ecuador’s breathtaking countryside! Excursions include zip lining above the rainforest canopy, visiting butterfly and hummingbird farms, the Museum at the Center of the World, Lake Cuicocha, Cascada de Peguche (waterfall), and so much more!

ACCOMMODATIONS: Students will stay in quaint, locally-owned hotels in Quito, Mindo, Ibarra, and Otavalo. All rooms will be double rooms and all hotels will be located in downtown areas with all needed amenities close by.

EcuadorAPPLICATION INFORMATION & ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be CEHD undergraduate students majoring in ECEE, MISE, or SPED. The application deadline is January 17, 2020. Please note that program capacity is limited and participation is contingent upon acceptance by the program leaders.

CREDITS AND COURSES: All students accepted into the program will be enrolled in EDSP 397-98: International Teaching Experience: Ecuador. In addition to the coursework abroad, students are will attend 3 mandatory 90-minute class sessions prior to departure in the spring 2020 term (meeting dates TBA).

DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS: Students with documented disabilities who may need accommodations during their International Learning Program should discuss these needs with the Program Leader at the time of application.

IMMUNIZATIONS AND MEDICATIONS: There are no required immunizations for travel to Ecuador, but students should consult with the International Programs Manager, Campus Health, and/or their health care provider to determine individual health needs..
