The University of Louisville Department of Theatre Arts Presents: Miss Holmes – A Feminist Twist on a Classic Detective Story

The University of Louisville Department of Theatre Arts is proud to present Miss Holmes, a thrilling reimagining of the Sherlock Holmes legend by playwright Christopher M. Walsh, directed by the acclaimed Jennifer Pennington.

This production not only brings a unique steampunk twist to the classic detective story but also challenges societal and racial norms by casting a Black woman as the iconic Sherlock Holmes.

In this gender-bent and racially diverse retelling, Miss Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Dorothy Watson work together to solve a chilling mystery while facing the limitations imposed by Victorian society. As the two women navigate a world that systematically tries to silence them, the story explores issues of gender, race, and class.

By casting a Black woman in the role of Sherlock Holmes, this production invites audiences to reconsider traditional depictions of one of literature’s most iconic characters. Director Jennifer Pennington emphasizes the importance of representation in the arts: “We are reshaping how audiences think about who gets to take up space in these legendary stories.  The systemic barriers she faces as a Black, neuro-divergent woman in a world which is very much like Victorian England adds layers of depth and urgency to her struggle for justice.”

The play's distinctive steampunk aesthetic enhances this layered storytelling. The fusion of Victorian style and futuristic industrial design serves as a metaphor for breaking down outdated societal norms and pushing the boundaries of both gender and race in a world that’s not yet ready to embrace change. Combined with inventive costuming, atmospheric lighting, and daring performances, Miss Holmes offers a wholly original theatrical experience that challenges audiences to confront modern issues through a historical lens.

Christopher M. Walsh’s sharp and compelling script, paired with the innovative direction of Jennifer Pennington, promises a riveting, visually stunning production that tackles themes of power, prejudice, and justice head-on.
