Attend An Evening with Maria Hinojosa: Celebrating Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month and Exploring the Future of Journalism

Oct. 7, 2024

By Stephanie Godward, Communications and Marketing Director, College of Arts & Sciences

The College of Arts & Sciences is thrilled to announce an event featuring world-renowned journalist and trailblazer, Maria Hinojosa.

On Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, Hinojosa will deliver a keynote lecture at the Jefferson Community and Technical College (JCTC) Health Sciences Hall Auditorium, followed by a reception and book signing in the atrium. This event is part of our celebration of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month and offers a unique opportunity to hear from one of the most respected voices in modern journalism ahead of the 2024 elections.

This event is sponsored by UofL campus partners including the VP Office of Community Engagement and VP Office of Institutional Equity, and is being led by the College of Arts & Sciences Office of International, Engagement and Equity Programs.

A Pioneering Journalist

Hinojosa has long been a voice for the underrepresented in the media. As the first Latina to break into many of the nation’s leading newsrooms, Hinojosa made it her mission to highlight the stories and experiences of those too often ignored by mainstream media. Her nearly 30-year career spans some of the most respected news outlets, including PBS, NPR, CBS, and CNN. She’s also the Emmy Award-winning host of Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One, a talk show produced by WGBH that provided a platform for thought-provoking conversations with influential figures across diverse fields.

In 2010, Hinojosa took her vision a step further by founding Futuro Media, a nonprofit organization dedicated to producing multimedia journalism focused on the new American mainstream. Based in Harlem, New York, Futuro Media creates content that empowers communities to navigate the complex landscape of an increasingly diverse and interconnected world. Through Futuro Media, Hinojosa’s work continues to address critical issues like immigration, identity, and social justice, providing a much-needed perspective in today’s media landscape.

Honoring Hispanic/Latinx Heritage

Hinojosa’s keynote comes at a pivotal moment, as the nation prepares for the 2024 elections, where issues of race, equity, and inclusion are once again at the forefront of the national conversation. Her presentation will provide insights not only into the current state of journalism but also into how Hispanic and Latinx communities can use the media as a tool for advocacy and change.

The event is part of a larger effort to honor and celebrate the achievements of Hispanic and Latinx communities, particularly their contributions to the cultural and political fabric of the United States. Hinojosa’s work exemplifies the power of storytelling in shaping public opinion and policy, especially for marginalized groups.
