FACULTY ASSEMBLY MEETING

January 19, 2000

Professor Albert Harris, Chair, called the meeting to order at 2:07 p.m.

The minutes of the meetings of November 4, 9, 10, 16, 17, 18, 22, and 23, 1999, were approved as distributed.

Under announcements, the Chair recognized Dean Willihnganz, who spoke briefly and then took questions about the College budget situation.

Continuing Old Business, the Chair recognized Professor Stenger, who moved, seconded by the Curriculum Committee, the following programmatic requirements for degrees in the College:

Bachelor of Arts

University-wide General Education-34 hours

Foreign Language-12 hours

Out of the Division of the major-9 hours, with 6 at the 300-level or above

Upper level WR-two courses at the 300-level or above*

Bachelor of Fine Arts

University-wide General Education-34hours

Out of the Division of the major-9 hours, with 6 at the 300-level or above

Upper-level WR-two courses at the 300-level or above*

Bachelor of Science

University-wide General Education-34 hours

Out of the Division of the major-6 hours at the 300-level or above

Upper-level WR-two courses at the 300-level or above*

*The upper-level WR courses may be incorporated into other degree requirements.

Professor McCarthy moved that the College return to the present General Education requirements and not adjust any of its requirements until such time as it is received a new university-wide approved document. The chair ruled this motion out of order, based on the Assembly's action of November 23.

Professor McCarthy appealed the Chair's ruling. The Chair's ruling was upheld.

Professor Herlin asked for clarification of the reasons for the committee's proposal for programmatic requirements, as separate from requirements set by the department of the major.

Discussion included Professors Stenger, McCarthy, Pfeffer, Williams, Cross, Wise, and Byers.

Professor Pfeffer moved to amend the Curriculum Committee proposal to add the requirement for 12 hours of foreign language to the BFA and BS degrees. The motion was seconded.

Discussion included Professors Chalmers, Cross, McCarthy, Williams, McElderry, Walsh, and Klotz.

The Chair put the question and the motion failed. A division of the House was called and the motion was defeated with 29 in favor and 41 opposed.

Professor Maloney moved that for the B.A. degree only, there be added the requirement of 3 hours in either the Arts or Humanities at the 300-level or above. The motion was seconded.

Discussion included Professors Chalmers, Williams, Reid, Cumbler, Wise, Herlin, Flodstrom, and Maloney.

The Chair put the question and the motion failed.

The motion was made and seconded to move into Committee of the Whole to discuss the issue of requiring students to include courses in more than one division in their out-of-division requirements.

The House rose and the Chair reported that in Committee of the Whole the body determined that it preferred not to further specify in what areas students would fulfill the requirement for courses outside the division of the major.

Professor Byers moved to close debate and call the question on the proposal from the Curriculum Committee.

The Chair put the question to close debate and it was approved with 51 in favor and 14 opposed. Debate was closed.

The Chair put the question on the motion on the floor (programmatic requirements) and the motion carried.

The Chair asked if there was any new business to be brought before the House.

Professor Byers moved to reconsider the motion on programmatic requirements and the motion to reconsider was seconded.

The Chair put the question on the motion to reconsider and it failed. A division of the House was called, and the motion failed with 19 in favor and 37 opposed.

A motion to adjourn was made, seconded, and carried and the Assembly adjourned at 3:25 p.m.
