Join us for the 2015 Celebration of A&S Excellence honoring our retiring faculty – Annette Allen, Humanities; John Cumbler, History; Linda M. Gigante, Fine Arts; Lida Gordon, Fine Arts; Robert Kimball, Philosophy; Jeffrey Skinner, English; Lee Shai Weissbach, History – as well as the winners of this year’s A&S Distinguished Faculty Awards and the Olorunsola Award for Outstanding Young Scholar. Friday, April 24 at theRed Barn. Last call for nominations for the 2015 A&S Alumni Fellow
The Alumni Fellow award is administered by the Alumni Association in cooperation with each of the University’s academic units, and is a permanent designation given by the Alumni Association and UofL’s Board of Trustees. To be considered a serious candidate, the nominee shall have:
- distinguished him or herself in their chosen professional field of endeavor
- made significant contributions to his or her community on a local, state, national or international level
- demonstrated integrity in his/her personal life and gained the respect of those surrounding him/her

Provost Calls for Nominations for 7th Annual Community Engagement Awards
The purpose of the CEA is to recognize exemplary engagement across this spectrum of activities wherever they may occur: locally, regionally, nationally, or globally. You may nominate an individual or group of individuals for any of the various categories. You can also nominate a community partner with your program has developed a particularly strong relationship of mutual benefit. Eligible activities include community-based teaching and learning, community-based research, partnerships, outreach, community service, volunteerism, internships, service-learning, practicum, or clinical experience. Award winners will receive an engraved crystal, $2,500 monetary award, and their name will be added to a permanent display in the Ekstrom Library. Deadline is April 30. Latin American and Latino Studies Club donation drive for Kentucky Refugee Ministries, Inc.
Please help the LALS Club help Kentucky Refugee Ministries, Inc. KRM is looking for some gently used items for incoming refugee families. Items needed include kitchen utensils, toiletries, full and twin bed sheets, bath towels, pots and pans, dishes and glassware, light bulbs, blankets and comforters, and other household items. Please drop off items in the LALS Offices (Stevenson 304-306) through Wednesday of this week. Questions? Contact Natalie Schuetz in LALS.

Abbott, associate professor of political science, speaks at "Asian Studies in the Contemporary World” Conference
Prof. Jason Abbott, Director of the Center for Asian Democracy, will be speaking at the "Asian Studies in the Contemporary World” Conference at Eastern Kentucky University on Friday, April 24th. The conference is sponsored by the EKU Asian Studies Program and the Bluegrass State Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence and celebrates the recent launch of the Asian Studies Program at Eastern Kentucky University.
Bio Team Hasenjager and Dugatkin
Matt Hasenjager (biology Ph.D. candidate) is lead author on a 75 page paper in the 50th anniversary issue of Advances in the Study of Behaviour,a very important journal in the field of animal behavior. Coauthor: Prof. Lee Dugatkin, biology. Full citation: Hasenjager, M. and L. Dugatkin 2015. Social Network Analysis in Behavioral Ecology. Advances in the Study of Behaviour 47: 39-114.
International Honor Quilt now searchable online
The International Honor Quilt (IHQ), a recent gift to the Hite Art Institute collections from Judy Chicago, is now online in a searchable database on the UofL Libraries website. The IHQ was gifted to the Hite Art Institute, to be permanently available for a variety of educational purposes including active scholarly research, exhibition and curriculum programming. Read more

These grants are intended for faculty and graduate students in A&S for the purpose of increasing extramural research funding, as well as the number of scholarly publications, refereed exhibits, and artistic performances.

Kudos and Congratulations
Nuessel named Full Member of ANLE
The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) named Prof. Frank Nuessel, Classical & Modern Languages, a Full Member of the Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española (ANLE). The honor is given to individuals based on outstanding research and publications in the field of Spanish language, linguistics and/or literature.
Allen, a junior in A&S, named 2015 Truman Scholar
Amanda Allen, an A&S junior double majoring in political science and communication, is one of just 58 U.S. college students who have been named a 2015 Truman Scholar. The Truman Scholarship is a prominent award that provides graduate education for public service-minded scholars and is valued at $30,000. Read more
Poetry in motion
4 A&S students have been invited to read at the Kentucky Poetry Festival's College Showcase to be held at the University of Kentucky on April 25. The students are: Bobby Rich (graduate), Joanna Englert (graduate), Tessa Withorn (undergraduate), and Dylon Jones (undergraduate.) These students will read at the showcase and have a poem published in an anthology produced to commemorate the event.
Congrats to the UofL Quiz Bowl Team
Congrats to the UofL Quiz Bowl team for their victories Saturday at the inaugural Salsarita’s Invitational. Both the Division I and Division II teams went 5-0 and won their respective divisions.
- 2 out of 4 Division I team members were from A&S: Jacob Graham (Psychology) and Megan Seldon (English and Humanities) The performance also clinched the team’s 5th straight Kentucky Collegiate Quick Recall League Division I title.
- 4 out of 5 Division II team members were from A&S: Max Brown (History), Erica Fields (Political Science), Cate Heady (Geography), and Jacob Wollam (English). The performance clinched the team’s 6th straight KCQRL Division II Title.
