Dean's Message

Dear Colleagues:

Arts & Sciences has always been a college with considerable strength in teaching, and even in the many years since growing our expertise in research and creativity to join the Carnegie R1 university ranks, we continue to value and excel at instruction. We aren’t very good at documenting this strength, however, and that hurts us in being able to identify those faculty members with exceptional teaching prowess and to recognize them appreciatively with rewards. We are working on getting better at documenting. We have committee groups working to develop a better process, and plenty of R1 universities ahead of us in this area from which to draw upon for best practices. I hope that we’ll be able to benefit additionally from the committees’ recommendations to model from other research universities some tenure-track teaching faculty lines.

Student perceptions is one way we evaluate teaching. For now, I’m happy to report that students independently submitted 854 nominations to the Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning for 385 UofL faculty members to be recognized for making a significant impact on their learning and intellectual development during AY18. Among the five top faculty favorites for 2018-18 is Professor Khaldoun Almousily in Classical and Modern Languages whose teaching has led to growth of our Arabic studies program and who has helped several students with successful post-graduate fellowships. The other A&S faculty are listed below. Be prepared; it's a long list!

No surprise; we dominate this list! Please mark your calendars now as these faculty will recognized at the 2019 Celebration of Teaching and Learning luncheon on February 15.

Sincerely,
Kimberly Leonard
Kimberly Kempf-Leonard, Ph.D.
