Monday Memo February 9, 2015
Dean’s MessageWe’re at the time in the semester where everything is in full swing, and the scope of activities within Arts & Sciences is pretty amazing. In February alone, we have sponsored or are sponsoring a long list of programs including but not limited to Theatre Arts’ production of Othello; a French Film Series; TedX UofL “Interconnected; Meet the Professor lecture by Charles Ziegler; a Popular Music Conference, the Louisville Conference on Culture and Literature since 1900; two Axton Readings – one featuring Sayed Kusha and the other, Frank X Walker; “Underground Railroad 2015, exhibitions of work by Mark Priest; and “Return from the Land of the Dragons” a talk by photographer and Vietnam veteran Michael Moryc. In addition, we are continuing to support the Engaged Scholarship in Action series for UofL faculty, staff and students with “Engaging Metro Louisville for Violence Prevention.” Dates and locations for these events and more can be found at uofl.me/as-events. We not only think, but we DO so much, and I am very proud. It is also time in the calendar to establish our course schedules for next year. To help our students, we want to offer a few classes that start at mid-term next fall and spring semesters, so please consider this option. These classes will enable some students to drop a class they’re failing, yet remain in compliance with their financial aid, and not get behind in their Flight Plans. The classes are likely to be small, and the students will be motivated to do their best. Currently the only option for these students is a class in First Aid, but we know there are many general education requirements that might be met instead. The late start classes could meet twice a week for three hours, three times a week for two hours, or once a week for five hours. Classrooms availability is best late afternoons, or Saturdays. You might offer the class as a hybrid model in the shorter period, possibly flipping tradition and offering the lecture on-line and the meeting on campus for discussions. Lastly, thank you for your submissions regarding engagement activities. The list is long and impressive. There is still a little time before we finalize our report and brochure, so feel free to submit additional engagement activities here. I plan to attend as many Arts & Sciences events as my schedule will allow and I look forward to seeing you there.
