A&S Planning and Budget Commmittee Minutes March 4 2002

Minutes: A&S Planning and Budget Commmittee

March 4, 2002

Members present: Bruce Adams, Susan DeWitt, Dean Julia Dietrich, ex officio; P. J. Ouseph, Thomas Riedel, Pamela Takayoshi, Chair; Nancy Theriot

The meeting was convened at 11:05 A.M.

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved after a minor change. The next item on the agenda was a discussion of the Dean's answers to our questions. It was agreed to keep informed about the process of the staff survey and its solution. The issue of advising was discussed in light of a response from Ellen Schoening. It appears that mandatory advising for all students is not feasible, but can be required on a departmental basis. The Committee together with A&S; advising will prepare an information sheet for faculty. The issue of summer teaching will be addressed by the Dean.

The Committee considered the Humanities Ph.D. proposal next. Concerns were expressed about the proposal, in particular regarding a lack of justification for budget items. A list of questions was generated. This list will be sent to all P&B; Committee members for further input and the final version of the questions, together with an invitation to the next P&B; meeting will be sent to the chair of the Humanities Ph.D. committee.

The next meeting is scheduled for March 25, 2002 at 11:00 a.m.

The meeting adjourned at 12:01 p.m.
