As UofL's largest academic unit, the College of Arts & Sciences offers a diverse range of opportunities from dozens of departments and programs in the natural and physical sciences, the social and behavioral sciences, and the arts and humanities. A degree from Arts & Sciences provides a solid foundation upon which to build future academic, professional and personal successes.
Our students learn how to think critically; but they don’t just think, they do. They explore, create, research, communicate, collaborate, and meaningfully engage in the world around them. As a result, graduates of UofL’s College of Arts & Sciences are adaptable, innovative, and highly attuned problem-solvers. They are lifelong learners who are well-equipped for the work force and primed to make significant contributions to their chosen professions and respective communities.
Belonging/Exile/Place - Humanities Research Lab CFA
Application Deadline: January 18th 2019. The Commonwealth Center for the Humanities and Society is organized around an annual theme that provides the foundation for the Faculty Fellows Program, the academic year’s scheduled events, and for a Humanities Research Lab, involving a bimonthly colloquium. The theme for the 2019-2020 academic year will be Belonging/Exile/Place.
Theory explaining addiction wins Grawemeyer psychology award
University of Michigan researchers Kent Berridge and Terry Robinson have won the 2019 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Psychology for explaining how our brains process “liking” versus “wanting” and how neural sensitization of the “wanting” system plays a key role in drug addiction.
A&S student Evan Gora to speak at Dec. 14 winter commencement
The University of Louisville’s winter commencement will be 7 p.m. Dec.14 at the downtown KFC Yum! Center. Of the more than 1,300 students on track to graduate this semester, 875 plan to take part in the ceremony.
UofL to host annual ceramics sale Dec. 7-8
Handcrafted ceramics by University of Louisville student and faculty artists will be available for purchase just in time for holiday shopping.
UofL Quiz Bowl team double winners in 2018
Congratulations to the UofL Quiz Bowl team for sweeping both divisions at the Kentucky Collegiate Quick Recall League tournament on Saturday, November 17, 2018. The team went a combined 14-1 on the day and defeated teams from Transylvania, Cumberlands, Eastern Kentucky, Jefferson CTC, and East Central College.
Biology researchers land grant to develop blood preservation tech
Biology researchers at the University of Louisville have invented a device and method for loading preservative compounds into red blood cells. Now, a $750,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and a cooperative agreement with Indianapolis-based Cook Regentec is allowing the team to develop the technology and get it to market.
Student ambassadors work to get out the vote
Wilson and Greenwell are UofL ambassadors for Vote Everywhere, a nationwide, nonpartisan effort by the Andrew Goodman Foundation to encourage citizens to get involved in the democratic process. Their endeavors are part of a coalition of partners and programs that helped gain UofL a “voter-friendly campus” designation from the Campus Vote Project and NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.
