The Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation, and Organizational Development (ELEOD) was awarded $293,000 as subcontractors on a Department of Labor grant ($1,500,000), which was awarded to the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation (KSTC). The grant is to advance Kentucky's Veterans Accelerated Learning for Licensed Occupations (VALLO) project. The project will streamline certifications and licenses for veterans, who often are fully or partially educated and trained for many occupation/professional-based fields requiring state certifications or licensure. The accelerated programs will transition veterans and service members more quickly and with less obstructions into employment. The Principal Investigator (PI) and Project Director for UofL is Jeffrey Sun, Ph.D., chair and professor in ELEOD and director of the Fort Knox Master Educator Course (MEC), and the co-PI and Assistant Project Director is Meghan Pifer, Ph.D.
Jean Wolph, instructor in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education and director of the Louisville Writing Project (LWP) and Kentucky Writing Project (KWP), was awarded a three-year grant, $354,000 per year, which is funded by a grant to the National Writing Project from the U.S. Department of Education. The funding will support her work with the project, "Scaling Up the National Writing Project's College-Ready Writers Program: Expanding Access, Reach, and Leadership for Ongoing Improvement." She and teacher leaders in KWP will provide professional development to teachers in partner schools located across the state to improve writing and comprehension skills of students in grades 3-12.
She was awarded the only statewide scale-up grant in this study, which provides funds to work with eight districts during the three-year period. Only 50 districts were selected nationwide. During the first two years of the grant, KWP will work with Bardstown City Schools, Hart County Schools, Clay County Schools, and Middlesboro Independent. During the third year, they will partner with Washington, Ohio, McLean, and McCreary Counties.
