Kudos & Congratulations

Congratulations to Outstanding Honors theses winners
Fine Arts graduating senior Katlyn Brumfield received the “Best College Honors Thesis” award in the Humanities Division. Political Science graduating senior Phillip Moore received the “Best College Honors Thesis” award for the Social Sciences Division. Biology graduating senior Jacob Edmisson received the “Best College Honors Thesis” award for the Natural Sciences Division.

Biology grad student awarded neuroscience award
Elizabeth Gordon, PhD candidate in Biology, was awarded the inaugural Outstanding Neuroscience Trainee award from the Louisville Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience. Elizabeth will use the $500 award to defray costs of attending the national Society for Neuroscience annual meeting in San Diego in November.

Kudos to Pan-African Studies students
The Department of Pan-African Studies would like to congratulate undergraduate majors Jamitra Fulleord and Courtney Brown for their induction to the National Council of Black Studies' (NCBS) Ankh Maat Wedjau Honor Society. They are among the elite undergraduates in the field for their scholarship and contribution to the community. PAS would also like to congratulate Summer/Fall 2016 departmental scholarship recipients: Ina Bell-Maze, Alyssa Betts, Mahogany Brown, Devonte Carson, Tori Ferrell, Ton'nea Green, Carlton Oldham, Taylor Robinson, Savvy Shabazz, and Andrea Wilson. All students will be recognized by PAS faculty and staff at the departmental graduation celebration on May 10th.

English grad student association raise money for Family Scholar House
The English Graduate Organization (a student-led organization) was able to raise enough money for Family Scholar House to sponsor a family for an entire year and to provide a month of heath, wellness, self-esteem and family bonding programming.

Geosciences senior awarded conference assistantship
Geography & Geosciences senior Kayla Thomas was one of 60 students nationwide awarded a student sssistantship for the July 2016 Esri User Conference in San Diego, CA, to promote collaboration and networking for GIS professionals.

Prof. Nix joins CJRA panel of experts
The American Society of Criminology (ASC) and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) recently partnered to create the Crime and Justice Research Alliance. Prof. Justin Nix (Criminal Justice) was asked to join their panel of experts. The CJRA is a centralized resource of authoritative experts and scholarly studies created to provide policymakers, practitioners and the public direct access to relevant research on crime and criminal justice issues.

Chemistry department recognizes outstanding students
The chemistry department hosted its First Annual Honor and Awards Ceremony on April 18. Twenty students, freshman through graduate level, were recognized for outstanding academic and research performance, leadership and service, and teaching. Photos can be see here.

Prof. Covi Birthday Celebration May 15
Please join the Department of Fine Arts in celebrating the 95th birthday of Professor Emeritus Dario A. Covi and to thank him for six decades of service. The celebration will be on Sunday, May 15, 2016 from 3-5 p.m. in Schneider Hall. Open to the public. Parking will be available at West Information Center off 3rd Street. RSVP by May 11 to Renée K. Chemistry department publishes inaugural newsletter
The chemistry department published its inaugural newsletter, the Cards Chemistry Report, aimed at increasing alumni engagement and overall visibility of achievements in the department.

National sheriffs’ group, opposed to federal laws on guns and taxes, calls for defiance (The Washington Post, 4/28/16) – Prof. Justin Nix (Criminal Justice) on a group called the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, which is intent on strictly enforcing their view of the U.S. Constitution.

Friday! 36 Miles exhibition explores the impact of the Ohio River on Louisville (Broken Sidewalk, 4/28/16) – On an exhibition created through a partnership between Fine Arts students and University of Kentucky Department of Landscape Architecture students on the impact of the river on the local community.

New titles complement Derby Week (The Courier-Journal, 4/29/16) – On "The Book" by Louisville visual artist Julius Friedman, a book project inspired by University of Louisville art librarian Gail Gilbert, who gave a bag of discarded books to Friedman to use in his art.

Student-organized Nobel series on track for Derby (UofL News, 5/2/16) – On the Chemistry Graduate Student Association’s long history of inviting noted scientists, most of them Nobel Prize winners, to campus to give two free, public talks around Derby.

Fat Albert as art history? Famed artist’s exhibition takes over Cressman Center (UofL News, 4/29/16) – The Hite Art Institute presents Sanford Biggers’ “Laocoon,” May 4-July 2, as the inaugural work in the New Monuments series at the Cressman Center for Visual Arts.
