A&S Communications Toolkit
The communications team for the College of Arts & Sciences has put together a “Communications Toolkit” for use by departments, centers, and institutes. If you have any communications needs or questions related to event planning and promotion, print and web design, social media, or fundraising and alumni development, please check out the Communications Toolkit webpage. You can also email asadvance@louisville.edu with questions or concerns.

A&S students, alumna win top awards for study
Several College of Arts & Sciences scholars have been awarded prominent scholarships that will enable them to travel to conduct research, teach or earn an advanced degree.

  • Kara Stivers (Political Science/History) was selected as the university’s Mary Churchill Humphrey Centenary Memorial Scholarship winner. Stivers will use the scholarship to earn a master’s degree in Russian and East European studies at University of Oxford, England.

Four seniors won the 2017 Etscorn International Summer Research Award. The winners are:

  • Devin P. Brown (Political Science) will head to Indiana University, Bloomington, to work on mastery of the Turkish language.
  • Macey Mayes (Political Science) will travel to Chiang Mai University in Thailand to study LGBTQ culture and identity in that nation.
  • Elisabeth Riddle (Theatre Arts/French) will take part in an intensive study of French and an independent research project in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • Nicole Robertson (Biology/Public Health) is going to Uganda to examine how health care providers educate and help Ugandan patients understand and manage non-communicable diseases.

New Center for Asian Democracy Vlog
The UofL Center for Asian Democracy (CAD) has started a new video blog, Asia Shorts, featuring brief discussions on issues of interest to Asian politics and Asian democracy. This week CAD Director Prof. Jason Abbott answers some questions on North Korea and its leader, Kim Jong Un.

Prof. He awarded U.S. patent
Prof. Zijiang He (Psychological & Brain Sciences) and his collaborator Teng Leng Ooi have been awarded a U.S. Patent for “SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR IMPROVING SENSORY EYE DOMINANCE, BINOCULAR IMBALANCE, AND/OR STEREOPSIS.”

Prof. Fosl chosen as Scholar-Activist of the Month
Prof. Cate Fosl (Women’s & Gender Studies), director of the Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research, was chosen as the Scholar-Activist of the Month by the Urban History Association.

CJ program ranks among best online
The Department of Criminal Justice has is #10 in the new best online Bachelor in Criminal Justice degree programs ranking by bestschools.org.

A&S alumna to lead YPAL in 2018 (UofL News, 5/31/17) – Aimee Jewell (’13 Communication), employer engagement coordinator at UofL’s Career Development Center, will serve as president-elect of the Young Professional Association Louisville.

What floppy-eared foxes taught us about how animals become tame (The Washington Post, 5/31/17) – Prof. Lee Dugatkin (Biology), author of the new book How to Tame a Fox (and Build a Dog), writes about the ways animals become domesticated, based on research from the book.

UofL fans invited to sport red, support theater (UofL News, 6/1/17) – University of Louisville fans and alumni can don their Cardinal red apparel to show school spirit at free outdoor A&S talks and Kentucky Shakespeare performances July 16 and July 26.
