Dean’s Message

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to remind you that our Celebration of Excellence is just over a week away – Tuesday, April 25 at 2 p.m. There will be great company, food, and “adult” beverages. This new and improved event will include displays of our honorees throughout Bigelow Hall. You will be able to view them at your leisure as you catch up with old colleagues and meet new ones. My remarks will be brief; we are not planning a long program.

To add to the fun, we will be drawing for some really great prizes. Everyone who attends will get a drawing ticket, but those who pre-register for the event by Friday, April 21 at 12 noon will get a second ticket and thus double their chances to win (NOTE: you must be in attendance in order to win). I know staff will be particularly excited about the five separate “Staff De-Stress Day” prizes we will be giving away (hint: the prize includes a day off)!

I am very excited to announce this year’s honorees (below). The Celebration of Excellence is our opportunity to recognize the expertise, talent, and commitment of some of our most outstanding people in the College. As is always the case, the field of A&S talent is very deep so the awards selection process can be a difficult one. However, I am pleased with this year's slate of candidates. Thanks to all who took the time to nominate colleagues and who served on the selection committees. Your time and effort make honoring these people possible.

Lastly, I want to take the opportunity to congratulate the twenty-nine A&S faculty whose promotions were recently approved by the University Board of Trustees. Their promotions will take effect July 1, 2017. Just one more reason to celebrate on the 25th!

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible next Tuesday. Be sure your colleagues know about it and plan to attend, and don’t forget to pre-register in order to double your chances of winning one of sixteen great prizes!

Sincerely,

 Kimberly Leonard

Political Science major Judson Adams earns Truman Scholarship
A&S junior Judson Adams was awarded a 2017 Truman Scholarship. He is one of only 62 students nationwide, and the only student from Kentucky to receive this prestigious award. Adams is a Political Science major with minors in Spanish and Aerospace Studies, and is public affairs officer in UofL’s Air Force ROTC cadet wing. The $30,000 scholarship will help Adams pursue a J.D. degree at Georgetown University, practice law as a Judge’s Advocate General Officer in the Air Force, and eventually use his experience in the military and in prosecution and ethics law to shape policy.
