Did You Know?

The First World War hit the College of Arts and Sciences hard. By the fall of 1917, more than half of the Arts and Sciences upperclassmen had volunteered or been drafted in the armed forces. However, because the College has a large number of female students, A&S fared better than other colleges at the University.

Prof. Du-Caines receives NSF CAREER Award
Prof. Jian Du-Caines
(Physics and Astronomy) received the NSF CAREER award for her project entitled “Physical Causes of Multi-Scale Temporal Variability in Atmospheric Tides from the Troposphere to the Dynamo Region.” The award amount is $500,000 and will be funded through June 2020.

Nursing and Geography team up for 2015 award
Profs. Carol Hanchette
(Geography & Geosciences), Carlee Lehna (Nursing) and Mary-Beth Coty (Nursing), student Amanda Speller (Nursing), and Erin Fahey (Program Coordinator, Nursing) received the 2015 American Burn Association’s Lindberg manuscript award for the best scientific paper submitted by a non-physician. Their paper was, “Geographic Mapping as a Tool for Identifying Communities at High Risk for Fires.”

Prof. Dawson-Edwards receives JCPS’ Golden Oar award
Prof. Cherie Dawson-Edwards
(Criminal Justice) received the Golden Oar Award, which recognizes individuals and teams who positively impact Jefferson County Public Schools. She was commended for her guidance, which has been integral in shifting to less punitive consequences in JCPS behavior guidelines and procedures. She also facilitated restorative circles in alternative schools and has led more than 50 hours of district professional development that focuses on restoration and inclusion. She co-chairs an external group called the Equity Council that will serve as a catalyst for educational innovation.
