Professor Stenger, Parliamentarian, presiding in the absence of Professor Byers, called the meeting to order.
The minutes of the meeting of December 7, 2007, were approved as distributed.
The Chair recognized Professor Leichty who, seconded by the Planning and Budget Committee, moved that the name of the Department of Physics be changed to the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Discussion included Professor Brown. The Chair put the question and the motion for the name change was approved unanimously.
The Chair recognized Professor Leichty for the Planning and Budget Committee and Professor Polzer for the Curriculum Committee who moved, seconded by the committees, the approval of the proposal for a Ph.D. in Physics.
Discussion included Professors Leichty, Brown, Griffin, Cross, and Pearson. Hearing no call for further discussion, the Chair put the question and the motion for approval of the degree program carried unanimously.
The remainder of the meeting was devoted to a discussion of the budget situation with Dean Hudson.
