AP SPANISH LANGUAGE & CULTURE

APSI University of Louisville, July 20-24, 2015

 

This Summer Institute will present the A.P. Language & Culture curriculum with strategies to develop higher level skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. The new AP Language & Culture examination will be thoroughly reviewed together with the latest changes to the upcoming format. Course revised in 2013.

INSTRUCTOR:  MONICA H. FRIEDMANN Ph.D.

Dr. Friedmann is a three-time graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.

She taught College in Pennsylvania and in her native Uruguay, and currently

teaches Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Literature at Spanish

River High School in Boca Raton, Florida. She is an AP Spanish Language

Reader and endorsed Consultant for AP Spanish Language & AP Spanish

Literature for the College Board. She is a member of the AP Spanish Language

and Culture Item Working Group.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The Course:

  • Prerequisites for the Course and Vertical Alignment
  • Overview of the Course Description
    • Learning Objectives and Achievement Level Descriptions
    • Instructional Design Using Themes, Contexts & Essential Questions
    • Course Audit: curricular requirements
    • Resources for the Course: authentic audio, audiovisual & print documents

 

The Exam: Participants will be given the opportunity to:

  • Review the Exam
  • Analyze sample items
  • Review a curriculum aimed at preparing students for the required tasks:
    • Thematic units
    • Contexts
    • Essential questions
  • Become familiar with scoring guidelines for free response questions.
  • Understand the focus of the free-response questions for 2014

 

Other topics for the APSI:

  • Developing & integrating the three modes of communication:
    • Interpretive, Interpersonal & Presentational.
  • Teaching the course across themes.
  • Using a variety of Web-based resources.
  • Integrating culture in the AP Language & Culture course.
  • Integrating literature in the AP Language & Culture course.
  • Draft a syllabus, which includes prescribed curricular requirements for the new course.
  • Building an AP Program, how to develop an AP Vertical Team.

Day Two: The Exam

  • Warm Up Exercise

Interpretative Mode:

  • Print & Audio texts combined
  • Use of Audio, Visual & Audiovisual.
  • Use of graphs, charts & maps.
  • Use of authentic literature: adapting the AP Literature reading list.

Day Three: Thematic Units
