Christopher Averill

Christopher Averill has been an Advanced Placement American History Teacher for twenty-six years and has been actively involved in the AP American History Reading for twenty-two years.  He has served in the capacity of Reader, Table Leader and Exam Leader and was instrumental in establishing the AP Teacher Best Practices Workshops at the annual AP reading.  He has been endorsed by the College Board as an AP Consultant since 1999 and has conducted numerous AP single-day workshops as well as Teaching and Learning Seminars. He has led APUSH Week-long Summer Institutes in Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, Virginia, Florida and Connecticut over the past eleven years.  He has also conducted week-long AP Achievement Academies in Florida and California.  Starting in 2010 he began a four year term on the AP US History Test Development Committee. Additionally, he was a Faculty Consultant editor for the 15th edition of the Alan Brinkley American History textbook. He has served in the capacity of History Department Chairman for twenty-four years first at Clover Hill High School and presently at Cosby High School in Chesterfield County, Virginia. In 2005-2006 he served a one-year term as the History Assessment Specialist for Virginia’s Department of Education. In 2016, he received Teacher of the Year Awards for Cosby High School, Chesterfield County and Virginia’s Region I thus becoming one of the eight finalists for Virginia’s Teacher of the Year.
