A&S Retrospective Exhibition: Jan. 24 - Feb. 24, 2007

"Contributions: an Arts & Sciences Retrospective” was on display in Januray and February 2007 at the new downtown facility of the Hite Art Institute, the Cressman Center for the Visual Arts. Showcasing the leadership role the University’s art faculty, visiting artists and students has played in Louisville visual arts over the course of its history; “Contributions” is part of the College of Arts and Sciences’ centennial celebration.

While the Department of Fine Arts was officially formed in 1937, and the Hite Art Institute with its endowed programs was created with the gift of Marcia and Allen R Hite in 1947, art instruction has been offered at the University of Louisville since nearly the formation of the College of Arts & Sciences in 1907. Since that time, the University has been introducing progressive ideas in the visual arts, broadening opportunity for participation both professionally and avocationally, and helping expand the identity of art and artists of the region.

By reviewing work from the University Art Collection (as well as borrowing from area collections) of the former faculty, visiting artists and scholars and the students of the school, “Contributions “aims to demonstrate these themes through the work on display and highlight the accomplishments both of these individuals and the department and college as a whole.

More than forty artists including such former faculty as Robert Doherty, Romauld Krauss and John Prangnell, visiting artists, Aaron Siskind, Rudy Pozzatti, and Barry Moser, students such as Robert Thompson, Sam Gilliam and Sally Hazelet Drummond or designers like William Porter, Donna Wong and Jelly Helm, as well as more recent faculty leaders such as Henry Chodkowski, Suzanne Mitchell and Sam Richards and their successful students are among those from throughout the century whose works were on display.
