University of Louisville (UofL) Hospital Transfusion Service is committed to providing the safest product possible to those in need of blood, blood components, tissue, skin and bone. Quality systems are in place and are regularly monitored. The University of Louisville Hospital Transfusion Service is inspected and accredited or licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), College of American Pathologist (CAP) and Kentucky Radioactive Materials regulators.
UofL HealthCare services include a Level 1 adult trauma service, a Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant program, a burn unit, outpatient ambulatory care and neonatal intensive care. Over 11,000 red blood cells, 3900 apheresis platelets and 3200 fresh frozen plasma are transfused annually. The Transfusion Services is also a Tissue/Bone Bank for hospital autologous and allogeneic tissue/bone products.
The Transfusion Service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with medical technologist dedicated specifically to the transfusion service. Transfusions are available for adults, neonates and home health. We offer comprehensive transfusion services including pretransfusion testing, prenatal testing, irradiation, and component modifications. Specialty tests include platelet antibody and heparin induced platelet antibody.
