Dr. Sam Kimmell graduated from Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2020 after graduating summa cum laude from Indiana University (IU) in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. During his time at IU, he tutored his premed peers in biochemistry and physics. As a senior he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa Society, the oldest academic honor society in the United States, often described as the most prestigious. In medical school Dr. Kimmell was elected to Sigma Sigma Phi academic fraternity and was heavily involved in extracurricular activities including leading a mission trip to the Dominican Republic and participating in numerous recreational sports. Dr. Kimmell established a PMR interest group at Marian and organized guest lecture series to introduce other medical students to the specialty and all that it offers. He completed a Transitional year internship at Indiana University Ball Memorial Hospital before joining the University of Louisville as a physical medicine and rehabilitation resident.

Since joining UofL PM&R, he has been active in academic work and in the community. Dr. Kimmell has co-authored a book chapter published in Manchikanti’s Essentials of Interventional Techniques in Managing Chronic Pain, presented an abstract at the 2022 American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine annual meeting, as well as an abstract at the AAPM&R Annual Assembly. During the fall, he volunteers as a team physician to provide football sideline coverage for local high schools. As for societal involvement, he is a member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, North American Spine Society, American Society of Pain & Neuroscience.

Dr. Kimmell’s academic interests include interventional spine procedures, Botox, EMG and pain management. Out of the office, Dr. Kimmell enjoys visiting national parks and hiking, playing sports, creating ceramic arts, investing, and cooking.
