Dr. Shaw is a graduate of Drake University and Washington University Medical School. After an internship at the University of Iowa, he served two years of active duty in the Air Force. Dr. Shaw then completed a residency in orthopedics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He and his family spent the next twelve years pioneering orthopedics and rehabilitation in South Korea and started the first dedicated rehabilitation center in Korea.

In 2014, a new rehabilitation hospital was named for Dr. Shaw which was built next to the Presbyterian Medical Center where he currently worked. Dr. Shaw completed a residency in Physical  Medicine and Rehabilitation in Louisville, KY, and was a founding partner of Rehabilitation Associates where Dr. Shaw was dedicated to integrating both rehab and orthopedics. After 25 years, the practice was dissolved and Dr. Shaw joined the University of Louisville Division of Rehabilitation Medicine under the Department of Neurosurgery. Dr. Shaw has a special interest in restoring hand function in the tetraplegic patient and resolving spasticity problems in stroke and other areas. He does this with Botox, baclofen pumps, surgery, and innovative bracing.

Dr. Shaw has returned to Korea several times to train surgeons in tetraplegic hand surgery and lecture to current rehab programs. His first rehab resident started both an orthopedic and rehab residency while in Korea. Dr. Shaw also served as Medical Director to the Southern Indiana Rehabilitation Center for 23 years but is now dedicated to a rehabilitation outpatient and surgical practice along with leading the stroke team at SIRH.

Dr. Shaw has received numerous awards from Korea including a Citation from the President of Korea for developing a rehabilitation program for children called The Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Center. In 2015, Dr. Shaw received the KentuckyOne award for International Humanitarian Service. Dr. Shaw retired from the Army after 12 years of active and reserve duty in addition to 12 years of duty in the Air Force.
