The University of Louisville Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program is a two-year program administered through the University of Louisville School of Medicine and run by the Division of Rheumatology, and is open to all eligible applicants.
The program is designed to be in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) to guarantee that all individuals completing the entire two-year program will be eligible for board certification in Rheumatology.
Goals
The goal of the Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program is to prepare fellows for a career in Rheumatology by providing extensive clinical training, basic or clinical research experience, and teaching responsibilities. The fellow will develop these skills in an environment of scholarship and inquiry. The graduating fellow will possess the cognitive knowledge, procedural and interpersonal skills, professional attitudes and practical experience required to become a practicing rheumatologist.
The successful Rheumatology academician must possess a broad variety of skills that will be provided by the fellowship training program. Trainees will develop experience and expertise in the diagnosis and management of a diverse spectrum of patients with disorders referable to the disciplines of Rheumatology.
This experience and expertise will be acquired by the trainee under the supervision of attending faculty through the management of patients in primary care and consultative roles in diverse inpatient and ambulatory settings. The trainee will acquire skills in basic or clinical investigation by conducting research in a structured and supervised environment. These clinical and research experiences will be supplemented by numerous conferences and didactic lectures.
Program Structure
The Fellowship program encompasses 24 months of clinical time. This focuses on Adult Rheumatology at the University of Louisville healthcare system and Robley Rex VA Medical Center. Fellows will also have a rotation with and exposure to pediatric rheumatology with Norton Children's hospital adjacent to the University of Louisville hospital.
Additional clinical exposure and/or rotations are offered with Dermatology, Hand Surgery, Nephrology, Orthopedics, Occupational Therapy, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pulmonology.
Musculoskeletal Ultrasound exposure and certification for fellows interested is offered and Dr. Housam Sarakbi serves as Chair of the Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Oversight Committee at the American College of Rheumatology. Ongoing research projects are also available for interested fellows..
