Tobacco Harm Reduction

This course educates physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, and other healthcare workers about far less hazardous products that deliver nicotine/tobacco satisfaction together with a small fraction of the health risks of smoking. This course does not promote any medical intervention. Rather, it educates health professionals so that they are in a better position to offer lifestyle options, especially to smokers unable or unwilling to quit nicotine/tobacco entirely.

About This Course:

The full scope of tobacco use and related risks to health, especially with regard to the differences between combusted and smoke-free forms of nicotine/tobacco use, are misunderstood by the millions of the nation’s smokers e-cigarette users and smokeless tobacco users, their friends and families, and the health professionals who serve them.  This has been documented in several national surveys.

If you are one of these health professionals, then you have shared the trials and tribulations of inveterate smokers and the calamitous consequences they face.

But a 2007 report by the British Royal College of Physicians was hopeful, “…that smokers smoke predominantly for nicotine, that nicotine itself is not especially hazardous, and that if nicotine could be provided in a form that is acceptable and effective as a cigarette substitute, millions of lives could be saved….”

This Course will Address the Following Topics:

Nicotine: Correcting Misperceptions

Smoking and Vaping in the U.S.

Risks of Smokeless Tobacco Use and Cigar Smoking Explained
