Research Description:

I have over 20 years experience in cancer epidemiology as Principle Investigator of the Health, Eating, Activity and Lifestyle (HEAL) Study, and Co-I of the Four Corners Women’s Health Study, Long-term Quality of Life Study, and the Breast Cancer Disparities Consortium.  The HEAL Study was a unique multi-centered, collaborative, long-term follow-up study 1,100 women diagnosed with incident primary breast cancers in New Mexico, Los Angles and Western Washington.  It was a groundbreaking study, being one of the first to establish the powerful protective association of exercise with breast cancer survival.  An over-arching research interest has been the role of nutritional status, energy balance, body composition, serum and genetic biomarkers in cancer risk and prognosis.  I also have a significant resume in research on aging, sarcopenia, obesity and chronic diseases including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.  I was a major contributor to the section on smoking and breast cancer for the 2014 Report of the Surgeon General on ‘The Health Consequences of Smoking — Fifty Years of Progress’.  As Chair of the Department of Epidemiology & Population Health, I have worked for over 11 years to promote cancer epidemiology through interdisciplinary partnerships among clinical, basic science and population researchers across the Health Sciences Center.  I am currently Co-Leader of the Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Development Core on UofL’s continuing effort for an IDea grant for a Clinical Translational Science Institute.  Lastly, I am continuing to work on an initiative to establish a statewide cancer epidemiology cohort in Kentucky that would include an extensive biorepository for development of molecular biomarkers for cancer.  Two previous submissions to NIH received good (40 to 50) but not fundable priority scores.
