"Keeping America Safe in the New Age of Danger" by Thomas Shanker
Thomas Shanker is the Director of the Project for Media and National Security at George Washington University. He has had a distinguished career of 25 years at The New York Times. Notably, he spent 13 years as the Pentagon correspondent, delving into the Department of Defense, global combat operations, and national security strategy.
Mr. Shanker's journalistic experiences include embedding with Army Special Forces in Kandahar during the early stages of the Afghanistan conflict and multiple reporting trips to Iraq and Afghanistan. His recent role involved serving as Deputy Washington Editor at The Times, overseeing coverage of military affairs, diplomacy, and veterans’ concerns. Mr. Shanker co-authored the best-selling book Counterstrike: The Untold Story of America’s Secret Campaign Against Al Qaeda. Prior to joining The New York Times, he held key positions at The Chicago Tribune, including foreign editor and senior European correspondent covering the Balkan wars, and reporting extensively from Moscow during pivotal years of the Gorbachev era and the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Eastern European regimes.
