Founder & Past Director - Professor John R. Hale
Professor John. R. Hale—a famous and influential field archeologist and historian—was the founder and past director of the Liberal Studies Program. For over 30 years, Professor Hale worked tirelessly to grow and promote the program. Under his guidance, the program secured over 4 millions dollars in grants or charitable donations that served (and continue to serve) the mission of the program. Professor Hale organized numerous academic activities (talks, conferences, symposia), brought world-renowned experts to the University of Louisville, and contributed greatly to the intellectual life of the University. He also developed the Individualized Major that offers students the opportunity to create their own major. While at the University, Professor Hale was a beloved teacher and a committed mentor who supported hundreds of students. With him as the Director, the Liberal Studies Program became a prominent hub of academic activities that, on the one hand, promoted and highlighted student and faculty interdisciplinary research, and on the other hand, served the Louisville community and the Commonwealth. Professor Hale is the author of many books and articles and his work has been featured in various publications and documentaries. Learn more about his work here. |
