How did your Individualized Major through the Liberal Studies Program prepare you for your next steps after graduation?
My Individualized Major allowed me the opportunity to take courses in a variety of subjects, expanding my knowledge beyond that of the typical college experience. The interdisciplinary track my major allowed me to hone skills involving biology, environmental analysis, communications, and social change which makes me a valuable asset in both the science community and advocacy positions.
Most memorable class you took as an undergrad? Why?
My most memorable class during undergrad is a "History, Mystery, and Medicine" Honors Seminar. This course used fictional mystery novels to teach about the history of medicine reaching as far back as the middle ages. I loved being able to learn about the history of medicine from a perspective different than that of a typical lecture.
What is the most thrilling or adventurous thing you've ever done?
The most thrilling adventure I have been on is definitely my research trip to the Peruvian Amazon. Through the University of Louisville, I got the chance to spend 2 weeks deep in the Amazon Rainforest in Peru helping to collect data for graduate students. Being 5 feet away from the rainforest's most dangerous snake made it all the more worth it.
Did you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are, what you believe in and what you're committed to in your work and life? Tell me about them.
My advisor, Sarah Springer, deeply influenced my college career. Until I met Mrs. Springer, I had changed majors countless times and had yet to meet anyone that understood or offered a promising way to shape my college experience. She introduced me to the Individualized Major, helped me choose what would fit best, and always encouraged me to add or change my curriculum as I saw fit. She truly believed in me and I will forever be thankful to her.

Advice for current Individualized Majors?
I would advise to never be afraid to try as many things as possible. Make a major that works for you and never doubt yourself. Make changes if necessary and don't regret it. The individualized major is all about making it your own experience and bringing together multiple subjects that will not only prepare you for postgrad but put you ahead of those with knowledge and skills in only one subject. Ask questions, email your adviser, and talk to other people in the program about their individualized majors. Have fun and make it your own.
