Individualized Major: International Relations
Graduation year

How did your Individualized Major through the Liberal Studies Program prepare you for your next steps after graduation?

My individualized major allowed me to gain a more holistic and encompassing education. It has spurred me to continue my education to get a Master's degree and has generated a wide array of opportunities throughout my undergraduate career.

Most memorable class you took as an undergrad? Why?

I have many memorable classes in my undergrad but the two that stand out most are my Urban Problems course by Dr. Weaver and an Independent Study on Planning Methods in the Netherlands with Dr. Merry. Both of these courses expanded my viewpoints and allowed me to think about policies on a wider scale.

What is the most thrilling or adventurous thing you've ever done?

Ha! This past summer another student and I rode our bikes (with everything needed to cook, camp, and stay clean) from Seattle to San Francisco. I might add that is was also the most frightening thing I've ever done! But definitely worth it!

Did you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are, what you believe in and what you’re committed to in your work and life?  Tell me about them.

Perhaps the most influential component of my undergraduate career has been the amazing mentors that I have had. Dr. Merry and Dr. Weaver in the Political Science department have been pivotal in my decision to further my education. Kathy Meyer and Pamela Curtis have mentored me in various aspects of leadership, challenging me to make a direct impact in the community. Likewise, Alyssa Murphy has been a support for me since my freshman year. These are just a few people who have been incredible mentors and I am exceptionally grateful for all their support and guidance throughout the years.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Young adult fantasy novels! Hahah, especially if I get to read them in my hammock out in nature. With a wonderful cup of coffee also.

Advice for current Individualized Majors?

My advice would be to expand your education in bold and daring ways. My individualized major was an excellent opportunity to capitalize on my education but also gain some exciting and thrilling experiences. Set your mind on something and do it!
