Since our first year at ULSD, Dr. Bohn has always put both patient and student wellness first. He dedicates so much of his time to helping students with complicated cases, frustrating lab work, or even smaller tasks like paperwork just to ease some of the stressors of dental school for us--while still providing excellent instruction! He never passes by an opportunity to teach us something or show us a new approach or perspective. He always has a smile on his face and knows everyone by name, proving he cares about us as students. It's clear he loves what he does, and he deserves so much more credit than what's been given!
Dr. Bohn has gone out of his way to help teach me the basics and had a way of making things simple so I could truly understand. He stays late, works through lunch and often has several students lined up outside his door for help. This man has taught me more than any other professor in the school. From preclinical work in my first two years to lab prescriptions for my senior CD, Dr. Bohn has been there every step of the way.

Dr. Bohn is one of the best professors at ULSD. He is always student focused and always takes the time to really get to know students on a personal level. I don't see Dr. Bohn as frequently as I did during my first two years at ULSD, but he has always made the effort to remember my name, and this fall, even when I saw him only about once per month, he always asked me about my recent wedding, marriage, and how I was doing. He went above and beyond to remember the details about my life. He truly cares about the dental students.

About the Award
All faculty, staff, and graduate teaching assistants nominated will be invited to attend the Faculty Favorite Reception, to be held during the lunch program at the Celebration of Teaching and Learning at Shelby Campus. All student nominations are posted on the Faculty Favorite Award website.
Additionally, there will be a smaller pool named as top nominees, drawn from those who receive the most nominations. These "Top" Faculty Favorites will be recognized campus-wide through UofL Today and on a banner that is displayed on the front of Ekstrom Library in early February. Instructors are eligible to be featured as a "Top" Faculty Favorite every five years.

Dr. Durski is an incredible teacher and mentor. The ULSD is very lucky to have him.
Dr. Durski goes out of his way constantly to make us better dentists. I appreciate the way that he teaches, giving us guidelines but also telling us to always ask why and make a decision for ourselves. He critiques us, but never without first telling us the things that we are doing well, and that makes all the difference!
Dr. Durski has been a huge help in the various classes he helps the D1 class with. With waxing, and now with the Operative Course, he has become a favorite for help and instruction. He is able to provide critical feedback in a very positive manner, but still hold you to a very high standard. The work that he expects is of a very high quality, and he is able to provide the directions to achieve his expectations. He is more than willing to spend the time that you need individually and help you with the things beyond the simple task at hand. He is one of the last faculty members around after lab and takes the time to stick around with someone who might need a little more individual time. He is a great instructor beyond the level to which has been set by the remaining faculty. He truly deserves this award for all of the work and help that he does in the operative course. His skills working with students are phenomenal.
Dr. Durski is an incredibly kind and smart man (and very handsome). We all love him! He gives us his all every day and will do anything to teach us how to perform to the best of our abilities in lab. Dr. Durski is a phenomenal teacher, and I improved tremendously from working under his direction.
Dr. Durski is always so helpful in Dental Anatomy lab and now in Operative. He gives advice in a way that is easy to apply, and everyone appreciates the way he interacts with the students.

Rishtya's assignments have been the most applicable to public health than any others that I've had. She emails us personally with feedback on assignments to make sure we are able to improve on the next one. She goes out of her way to make sure everyone understands everything and is getting the most out of the class. She's wonderful!
Professor Kakar goes above and beyond to make sure the students not only understand the material, but can apply their knowledge as well. She is easy to talk to and addresses all questions, comments, and concerns. We discussed my academic performance in her class during office hours once, and she made me feel very comfortable in addressing all of my concerns.
She is very good at teaching the essentials of what we need in order to get a complete understanding of introductory Public Health and its applications. She's very patient and understanding of a full-time student's schedule and allows flexibility on deadlines for assignments.
Rishtya has been a wonderful professor and mentor.
This fall, I took Global Health with Rishtya. I was very apprehensive at the start of the course, as I was not sure what to expect, and the syllabus and all of the assignments seemed intimidating. However, as the semester went on, I gauged a sincere sense of passion from Rishtya, in that she is truly an advocate for all facets of public health, especially when it comes to complex global health burdens. Every assignment has made me feel more knowledgeable about the world we live in, and it has prepared me to enter the field of public health with a broader range of knowledge than before I entered the course.
A hard worker, kind, friendly.
She is very passionate, but still considerate of others' views. The assignments all relate to and enhance the course. She inspired me to become a public health major.
Rishtya is such a knowledgeable professor who creates a creative and engaging learning environment for her students. She never fails to answer any of the questions her students ask to the best of her ability and never makes a question feel like "a stupid one." I am always comfortable to speak out in her class, and I love how she presented the material, very clear and concise! I would definitely recommend her to other students.
I like this teacher, and I enjoyed the class because she is on time and to the point on the course. She makes me to be on time and do my assignments ahead. -
Steven Myers (In Memoriam)

Dr. Myers had the greatest impact in the shortest amount of time of any professor I've ever had. He worked with his students more than anyone else and made us all feel like he would truly go above and beyond to make sure everyone in the class succeeded.
Dr. Myers was truly an amazing man. He was one of few professors/faculty at ULSD who actually cared about the students and seeing them succeed. He was one who would do anything to help his students with whatever it was they needed, even if we asked too much at times. It wasn't hard to see that he loved what he did and enjoyed sharing that knowledge with his students. Dr. Myers will be missed by all who knew him. It is a sad day not only for the loss of such an amazing professor at ULSD, but also to his family and friends. Rest in peace, Dr. Myers.

Dr. Myers sadly passed away on Sunday December 4, 2016. He was one of the most caring compassionate professors I have had. Very concerned about us as students and very willing to help however he could. He will be missed, and I think it would be extremely appropriate to honor him as "Faculty Favorite."
He was always nice and friendly, willing to accommodate, and showed that he cared about all of us as students and people.

I remember texting him on a Saturday asking for clarification on a topic, and he had responded in two full paragraphs a complete explanation within 10 minutes! I'm sad to hear the news of his passing. He was a wonderful person and a great teacher. I know he won't be able to attend the banquet, but he truly deserves this recognition.

Not to force only the best of the best to make it through but to make sure we all learned the skills necessary to becoming good dentists adept in the knowledge of his field of pharmacology.
Dr. Myers was truly a great professor, as well as a great person. He wanted nothing more than to see his students succeed and gave us every opportunity to do so no matter what length he needed to go to. He was always available to us. He made an impact on everyone he taught and will truly be missed.

Dr. Myers had his teaching priorities in the proper order. He organized our pharmacology class well and simplified things whenever possible. He seemed to genuinely care about our learning of the course material without exerting any unfair power over us. He never failed to make himself available for questions and offered review opportunities before every exam. He was a kind spirit who exemplified professionalism and expertise. Aside from his superb teaching skills, he had a great voice that even an overworked dental student wouldn't mind listening to. His passing was met with such grief, not only for the loss of a good man in this world that needs him, but selfishly, with disappointment that I wouldn't get to learn from him again. His presence at the University will have a lasting impact on me as a student. That might sound like a nice thing to say, but the level of admiration and respect Dr. Myers deserves is a new inspiration for my career-in-the-making. -

I think he would be a great supervisor for LBD because he knows what effective Gen Ed. and resource classrooms consist of. He is so compassionate about everything education!

Mr. Patton is nothing short of an amazing professor. He is flexible with his teaching style, dependable, and understanding. He really relates to the struggles of students and makes us feel like he truly understands the difficulties of being students while juggling full-time jobs and families (some of us). I would take him for every required course if I could. We are leaving his class feeling understood, valued and having gained a wealth of knowledge.
Mr. Patton works diligently to ensure that he is providing the best educational experiences to his students as possible. Not only does he pass on his knowledge on content areas to provide information to students, but he also calls in experts in different fields to ensure that we are receiving the best information available on a given topic. He works with students to make assignments useful and meaningful and ensures that they understand the purpose behind completing a given assignment. After less than a complete semester working with him toward the end of my professional journey, he has instilled a newfound inspiration to change the future of education in myself. Mr. Patton is a truly passionate professor who cares a great deal about the students that he is teaching to as well as the content that he is teaching about.
Mr. Patton was my EDTP 201 teacher in the Spring semester of 2015. Being in his class and having him as a teacher is one of the reasons that I continued on my journey to become a teacher!

Brandeis School of LawProfessor Abrams is an amazing, intelligent and thought-provoking professor. She goes above and beyond for every student. She recognizes the strengths each student has and works with them to expand and use that strength to help others. She teaches tough material in a clear and concise way. I have had her for two classes, and my knowledge of that material is exceptional. While she also teaches material very well, she also provokes deep discussions about our thoughts about the law and always works through a policy lens, knowing that one day, we will each be able to affect change in our community. I nominate her for this award, she is a very deserving candidate.
Prof. Abrams is amazing. Not only is she passionate about Brandeis Law School, but she is passionate about seeing her students succeed. She will take the time to repeatedly go over everything as many times as you need to have a good understanding. She always has a kind and encouraging word no matter what life and law school brings. (And this has been only a class! To think of what he knows beyond a microbiology lecture! Incredible!) It was so fun to learn from Dr. Atlas this semester. He was a warm and caring professor, had a great personality, and was a great teacher, as well; which is sometimes difficult to come by. I hope Dr. Atlas knows that he is loved, respected, and appreciated. -

Through loads of diagrams and object lessons such as "the exploration of how a pressure vessel could rupture through a comparison with hot dogs, then the class gets to eat the hot dogs" lets him connect with his students. He always is kind and friendly with his students. I can think of no better option for the faculty favorite choice for the fall semester of 2016.
Dr. Berfield is the best professor I've had, and he makes class enjoyable and simple. If you need help, he is there to help and will make sure you understand the content.
I had the pleasure of taking Dr. Berfield's 'Experimental Stress Analysis' class this semester and thoroughly enjoyed the class setting and material. Teacher is very approachable and is willing to help.
He is a very good professor who is willing to do anything to make sure you understand what is going on. He is willing to help with projects as well outside of class.
T Berf was great, effectively taught the material, was available outside of class to answer questions and clarify material, provided lots of help for the ME 324 Lab, overall a great professor and great guy. The hot dogs were a great bonus too.

Jennifer was an excellent online professor to the graduate students at the Kent School of Social Work. She put in the time and effort to make us feel appreciated and respected as practitioners from afar. It is rare to find an online class where one truly feels part of the community and feels that their voice is heard.
Professor Bobo is one of the best professors I've ever had. She has made herself available to students almost 24/7, adjusted course content to fit our needs, and spoke with me on the phone to assist me with coursework. She cares immensely and will touch many more students in a positive way if she continues to teach.
Professor Bobo made learning challenging but still interesting and relevant. Her presentation of information was well thought out and incorporated skills needed in the field. She was understanding, approachable, and accessible to students. She checked in often regarding concerns, assignments, and student needs. It was not unusual for her to offer additional office hours when students struggled with an assignment or contact students directly to offer support or to help increase their understanding. She is a huge advocate of self-care and stressed its importance frequently. She is one-of-a-kind and deserving of recognition. Bobo is a dynamic teacher who is passionate about social work. She makes the lessons meaningful and applicable to practicum and career experience. Again, she is all about self-care and being advocates for change.
Professor Bobo has made a significant impact on my learning at the University of Louisville, Kent School of Social Work by reaching out to me and letting me know when I did a good job on an assignment or project. We do not get praised as much as we should in life and being praised has helped me persist in my studies this final year of grad school. It has been a tough and exhausting semester, but Professor Bobo has made it a memorable and engaging semester. Her positive remarks about my progress has helped me persist in my education when I really needed it. Professor Bobo has excellent communication skills and is very knowledgeable in the field of social work, especially teaching students about evidence-based interventions in trauma and crisis. She excels in delivering a variety of methods to teach students as everyone has different ways of learning. I believe Professor Bobo contributed greatly to my success in learning about social work practice while at Kent School.
Jennifer Bobo created a positive learning environment for all students. She varied the learning assignments to accommodate all learning strengths. She always made herself available for any questions her students had regarding coursework or assignments. She also utilized assignments that helped students to forge relationships with other classmates which is very difficult to accomplish in an online setting. Jennifer Bobo is very invested in her students' success and Kent School of Social Work's success as well. She is an asset to the program and the university. -

Professor Borden made what is the hardest class in Speed School fun. I never thought I could learn about strain gauges and laugh at the same time but with Borden I did. He also shared a lot of professional insight given his background at GE. I know that in 20 years from now, I won't remember every equation I learned in every class, but I know I'll remember all the classes I had with Professor Borden.
The most approachable professor (as a senior) I've ever had. Made a bad class fun and bearable. Great real-life work experience that he could refer to during class.
Prof. Borden was given the class I was in less than a week before school started, giving him very little time to prep the course. He took this in stride though. ME 414 was one of the hardest classes the department offers, and Borden did an excellent job taking the material we absolutely needed to know and focusing on that and not having any fluff. Very approachable and loves talking with his students. His lectures are a conversation with the class. -

Dr. Brueckner is one of the best professors I've ever had. As someone who has never taken anatomy before, she quelled my worries with her expertise and guidance. She is not only brilliant but also a warm and welcoming professor who truly cares about her students--a rare combination among the elite. She strives to make sure that we succeed and understand the intricacies of what we are studying. Her enthusiasm is infectious and makes anatomy exciting despite the apprehension I had going in. Her passion for her field is unmatched by any professor or teacher I've known in all my life. She is so knowledgeable and makes her classes so intriguing. In addition, she is a fantastic advisor, very willing to work with her students. She always puts them first. Dr. B. is an amazing professor, an incredible person, and a great friend to all she meets. You will not leave her office without a smile and a hug. Dr. Buchanan is such a wonderful woman who never meets a stranger. From the moment you introduce yourself, she embraces you in compassion and friendship. She is more than just a professor, she is a friend. She is so passionate about her subject and you can tell in how she engages in class. She made this semester the best one I've had yet, and I could not think of a more deserving person for this honor.
Rhonda has an enthusiasm and passion that is contagious. She genuinely cares about the learning of her students, and it is apparent. She finds creative ways to get students involved, inside and outside of the classroom. She offers an array of assignments, allowing the students to learn the content in as many ways as possible. I'm not a LALS major or minor, but it's something I consider just so I can have the pleasure of having her as my professor again.
Dr. Buchanan makes each class exciting and interesting. She interacts with all students and makes sure that we understand the material. Dr. Buchanan does everything with a positive attitude and is one of the kindest professors that I've ever had.
I have enjoyed taking Ms. Buchanan's class due to the fact that I've worked very hard in her class, and she doesn't give up on her students. Ms. Buchanan is an amazing teacher and relates everything in the class to our lives. She's a hard-working teacher and provides great feedback. She also goes above and beyond for her students, helping them.
Dr. B is wonderful. She is always enthusiastic, and you can tell she loves what she teaches. She even brings her own props every day related to what we'll be talking about in class. Her enthusiasm makes the class way more exciting.
She goes above and beyond what's required to help her students both inside and outside of class. She's made a huge difference in my education, not only as a teacher, but also helping me through important decisions like studying abroad and picking up a minor! Great professor, great person.
Dr. Buchanan truly embodies what it means to be a professor who truly cares for her students. She not only teaches with such enthusiasm and passion which truly allows her students to love learning the Spanish language, but she goes above and beyond her duty as a professor. She cares for her students as if we were her own children and that is something that is extremely rare to find in the college academic setting. She was also very fair with her grading and very involved in our education. She made sure our schedule with other classes didn't conflict with her project dates, which gave us more time to work on our projects. She was also considerate enough to continually state what the purpose of each step in our projects were. Dr. Charette is one of my favorite faculty members here at ULSD. -

She cares deeply about the learning outcomes of her students, and her interpersonal tact is amongst the finest I have observed in nearly 19 years commissioned service to the US Army. Dr. Charron's efficacy as a professor is enhanced by her remarkably high emotional intelligence. Her genuine enthusiasm for her subject matter is infectious--she made me want to learn more. She is the finest CFDC professor I have had to date, and my only regret is that I will not have an opportunity to take another class from her prior to graduating. -

Dr. Chastain is one of the best professors I've ever had, and I say this after having attended multiple universities. His classroom is a fun, engaging and inclusive atmosphere where I believe everyone feels comfortable asking questions and working together to learn. It is easy to tell that Dr. Chastain loves teaching and cares about the well-being of his students. I am very thankful to have had Dr. Chastain for two semesters.
I have never really enjoyed physics, but after taking Dr. Chastain's class, I both understand and enjoy physics. I think it says a lot that Dr. Chastain as a professor in that he was able to take a subject that is both challenging to teach and understand and present it in a way that is easily understood and enjoyed by his students. This is the first physics class I have taken that I have actually understood what I was doing. I am genuinely sad this class is over. It was easily seen throughout this course how much he cared about students, and one thing I have noticed about college professors is that this is not always the case. I am very glad I got the chance to take his course.

Incredible teacher. Dr. Chastain is one of the best instructors I have ever had, at any school. He is engaging, excited to teach, and does so in a way that is very conducive to learning material. He is constantly readjusting material or lessons based on how much or little the class is understanding ideas. He is always open and welcoming to help students fully grasp the material. I was initially intimidated by taking physics but it has quickly become one of my favorite classes. I made my schedule for next semester revolve around getting into Dr. Chastain's section of physics 222. I'm not sure you could find a teacher who cares more about the education of students more than Dr. Chastain. Dr. Chastain is fantastic. The care he displays for his students is astounding. My knowledge and understanding of the English language limit my ability to properly explain the extent of my for praise for him. I feel privileged to have had him as an instructor in two classes now. He makes intimidating concepts understandable. He inspires confidence in my abilities as a student. It is rare to have an instructor who has his unique mix of care, knowledge, patience, and helpfulness. Dr. Chastain exemplifies the ideal qualities of an educator, role model, and mentor. I feel that in knowing him, I have not only grown as a student but as a person. My time at the University of Louisville has become an invaluable experience with so much of that derived from my time learning from Dr. Chastain.

Dr. Cumberland has "gone to bat" for me on multiple occasions by encouraging me to pursue unique opportunities, counseling me on my career change and academic pursuits, giving consideration to my goals, and letting me know that she cares about my success! She honors my qualities, challenges me to grow, and supports me in caring for my needs.
This is the best instructor I have had by far! You can tell that she is passionate about what she teaches. I have learned more in this one course than I have in any other course taken thus far!
I am in ELFH-614 w/Dr. Cumberland this semester. As an Air Force First Sergeant, I have an odd and demanding work schedule that involves a ton of traveling, and I live in Alabama, not Kentucky. I have had some issues figuring out how to complete my degree in a timely manner and still be productive at work. Even though she isn't my assigned advisor, Dr. C listened to me and guided me with creating a plan that fits my life. As an instructor, it is clear from the beginning of the term that she is truly passionate about the subject, the students, ensuring we all understand what we need to succeed, and are able to apply what we are learning. She is very responsive to questions and has been able to help me understand Program Evaluations, which will help me tremendously at work. Bottom line...Dr. Cumberland is an awesome instructor who loves what she does and deserves recognition!!

He is excellent at explaining extremely complicated topics in such a way that makes sense and is easily digestible. I have quite simply never encountered a professor more dedicated and invested in our education. Before an exam, he walks through the library to ensure no student has questions or is confused with the material. While Dr. Ellis is an amazing lecturer, it's the small things that he does that make him an excellent professor. Just save yourself some time and award him the title every year for the duration of his time at UofL.

Dr. Ellis is an exceptional professor who merges the gaps between biochemistry and medicine. He strives not only to teach us the fundamentals of biochemistry but eloquently relates it back to clinical relevance with sharp logic. He aims to educate not for memorization but deeper understanding, and for that I am very grateful. Although biochemistry can be difficult, Dr. Ellis makes it fun and goes out of his way to make sure that we have a good understanding of the processes in order to set us up for future success as physicians. Beyond his duties as a professor, he also comes in on the weekends and sets up weekly reviews to elucidate any confusions that we may have. You can tell that he not only loves the subject he teaches, but he also truly cares about his students despite his endearingly sardonic quips. -

Kent School of Social WorkCarl Enoch is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He meets his students on their personal academic level and relates to them well. He was one of the only teachers I have ever had who told me that my learning was the most important thing; previous teachers would dictate assignments and due dates by what is easy and convenient for them. Mr. Enoch responds to the needs of his students, in many ways. Mr. Enoch gives excellent feedback and many opportunities for students to receive that feedback and other help. Mr. Enoch's classroom is rich with knowledge, respect, and social work values that make learning mass amounts of policy easy, and almost even fun. I have used many of Mr. Enoch's PowerPoints and supportive research in both academic and personal work. He has taught me to back up my beliefs with evidence in my papers and in personal debates or conversations. I will take everything he has taught me very far along in my career in social work; literally, I have downloaded all of his PowerPoints and PDFS to make sure I don't lose them! This is all coming from someone who swore off policy work her first week in the class, determined that micro was the only thing for me. Mr. Enoch slowly, slyly instilled in me a passion for policy and the macro perspective that emboldens me to bring my voice to everyone before me. -

In a world that can be at times discouraging and overwhelming, Dr. Freeman is always a bright positive star to look towards. Her passion for people and her strong, resilient, resolute personality has given me a great model for the type of person I want to be. The person I am and continue to become is much indebted to Dr. Freeman, and I think for an educator to affect not just someone's mind but the core of their person as she has done for me, is a rare but truly invaluable thing, and is the deepest and most genuine type of education you can receive. I am a better person and a better thinker for knowing Dr. Freeman, and the impact she has had on me will, without doubt, last forever.

Ms. Gregg went above and beyond the call this semester. I am an older student without a strong background in math. Haven't had a math class in decades. I took GEN 104 due to my needing statistics to complete my nursing degree. I was overwhelmed from day one. Mary would not let me give up on myself, let alone withdraw from the class. She has a very unique way of teaching and has a passion for math that I've never experienced. Unlike some college teachers, she cares about her students and is willing to go the extra mile and then some for them. Without a doubt, the best teacher I have ever had in my sixty years of going to school. To not give Mary this recognition would truly be a missed opportunity to say great job to a deserving educator. He has combined everything dental related that has been taught to us for the past two years and combined it all into one semester seamlessly. Teaching the Treatment Planning course, where all the concepts start to come together, a critical concept as we are about to proceed into the clinic to apply all that we have learned. Dr. Haake was extremely organized throughout the course, perfect balance of other faculty lecturing, periodic quizzes to solidify concepts, and always making the course enjoyable by having a good time in lecture. By the way he lectures, it is obvious the love and passion he has for dentistry and the desire for us to succeed. Thank you, Dr. Haake, for teaching us and for pushing us to succeed. -

He never misses to encourage his students and to give opportunities to practice theoretical knowledge, as well as to discuss difficult situations with clients in class. He is using a lot of tools to help students not only to gain knowledge but to grow personally. Moreover, he did a great job in structuring the class to ensure that we as students would be able to understand the whole process of an intervention and that assignments are not only a performance evaluation, but even more, another tool to improve our skills. Dr. Hall has a great knowledge in his field but never looks down on his students but always makes sure to meet them on eye level. He was truly the best teacher I ever had. (SW640, fall semester 2016)
Dr. Hall has served as my mentor this year, and during that time, we have written most of a program evaluation of a state intervention of a child welfare intervention and published two papers together. He is a committed teacher and researcher who uses his talents to try and improve the lives of those who suffer with addictions to drugs and alcohol. His work is an asset to UofL and the lives of his students. -

She is a valuable asset to the HROD program and the University of Louisville. All of her classes have been both challenging and rewarding, which made me a better student. Dr. Herd is a rock star! Not only is she knowledgeable, but she understands the importance of engaging her students and motivating them to learn. As a nontraditional student, this was imperative to my graduate success!
Dr. Herd makes students feel as if they can accomplish anything. She advises on degree plans, paper topics and career goals while assisting with class-specific questions. Dr. Herd is a great resource and makes students feel their input is valuable although they are learning from her.

I cannot express my gratitude for Dr. Herring enough. She has been instrumental in my understanding and learning of anatomy, and I believe she is the most deserving person for this award. Even on the weekends and late into the evenings, she responds to all students' emails individually with long, thought-out, thorough responses. She has gone above and beyond for our class all semester. In addition, this was the inaugural year for the dental injections lab in which she had specific cadavers for us with which to practice giving injections. This is something that has never before been done at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry or any other dental schools that I know of. In addition, one of the most important things I've learned from her is compassion. She, through her own actions and as well as in words, conveyed to us the gift that had been given to us by the Willed Body Program, which she runs. She placed infinite emphasis on the importance of having our first patient, the person who so graciously donated their body so that we may learn from them and trusted us to treat them well. At the conclusion of the lab portion of the class, she organized a ceremony for the families of the donors where we heard performances from the choir as well as read letters that we had written to the donors and their families. There is no one else that could have given this semester the importance and impact that it has had on me and my colleagues, and Dr. Herring deserves this award more than anyone and deserves to have her accomplishments recognized. Thank you.
Dr. Herring injected life into anatomy and made it a subject I enjoy instead of dread. She brought energy, levity, and her unique love for the subject to every class. She not only managed the entire course without showing the toll it must have taken on her, but she even surpassed her job description--learning each student's name personally, arranging supplemental injection labs, and even personally emailing us our specific questions missed when the scantron machine broke down. For these reasons and many more, Dr. Herring has left a marked impression on my education, perception of anatomy, and approach to challenges in the future.
Dr. Herring went above and beyond to teach anatomy. Not only did she incorporate more dissections just for our dental background (e.g. injection blocks and oral surgery procedures), she also would create the best diagrams to aid our studying. She was always available to answer our questions and encouraged us to become avid learners. My only wish was to have Dr. Herring's course to be longer because now I would like to have more anatomy. Thank you!
I am so grateful for Dr. Herring. She takes pride in the success of her students. She went above and beyond to make sure that as individuals we understood the material. She made the material fun and engaging. This anatomy class is by far one of the best teaching experiences I have had thus far at UofL. Words cannot describe how thankful I am to have Dr. Herring as an instructor. Dr. Herring has been one of the most influential people that I have encountered since I've started this dental school journey. Not many teachers that I've had during my educational career has gone out of their way to make sure I had a clear understanding of the material in the class like she has. She goes above and beyond for us, from creating charts and graphs to help learn material, to emailing each and every one of us INDIVIDUALLY on what concepts we need to focus on for an upcoming exam. If it wasn't for her guidance, gross anatomy would have been a very difficult course to get through; but thanks to her, anatomy has been the best class thus far!

I have never felt like I could open up to another professor or advisor the way that I have with her. Honestly, she has put such a light in my life that I will never forget and always want to keep.
She always showed up to class with a smile on her face and made math methods for elementary ed fun! She is hardworking, dedicated, and tries her absolute hardest to connect with all of her students. One of the best professors (if not the best) that I've had at UofL!
This professor is knowledgeable and passionate about mathematics content in the classroom. She is a well-rounded person with a glowing personality. Very grateful to have her as my professor this semester and learn various ways to teach math in my classroom.
Please choose Dr. Id-Deen. I felt like I wasn't going to be a good enough mathematics teacher. She encouraged and provided with all the help I needed, without knowing about my low confidence. I know I am now prepared to teach and manage a classroom because of the content in her class that prepared me. She inspires others by just being real. She's the "realist" professor I've ever met and you can't replace her.
Dr. Id-Deen is one of the most compassionate, dedicated and inspiring instructors I've had at the University of Louisville. She made an effort to build a positive and fun classroom community, demanding respect and maintaining high expectations for all. As a student receiving accommodations, she was always supportive of my individual needs. Dr. Id-Deen is genuine. She leads by example, helping mold me into a better educator and person.
Dr. Id-Deen is easily one of the coolest and most personable professors I have ever had. She consistently makes every class engaging and relevant to her students. I will miss my Tuesday afternoon math methods course.
I wrote this professor a poem, because she really did make a difference in my semester. (Ignore the unprofessional part because she was professional at all times, it was an inside joke in the class.) Lumiere I remember at the beginning of the semester I was skeptical About a Math Methods class, the last experience I had In a math class at UofL wasn't the best, I stayed optimistic Thankfully, I was wrong and Math Methods turned out To be my favorite class this semester and it all had to do With my professor. Creative, funny, sometimes unprofessional, But always engaging Dr. Id-Deen. Her focus was on building Personal Relationships with each student and making everyone Feel welcomed in her classroom. Each Math Methods class Was more than enjoyable. Every single day I felt I was learning Something valuable and sometimes Dr. Id-Deen didn't even need to teach it. Being the only male student in the class I always feel out of place But Dr. Id-Deen brought me closer to my classmates and her By calling my classmates “Beauties” and me “The Beast"Little things like that really went a long way. I honestly loved How calm everything was in that class. It felt like everyone Was there for the ride and every class I left with the biggest smile On my face, wishing every college class was like that. Dr. Id-Deen Made me glad I chose the field of teaching, I hope I can be on Her level someday. Probably not but one can hope. Dr. Id-Deen everything I said in there is true. At the end of every class, I had a huge smile on my face. I had the best time in your class, and I appreciate all the things you have done for me.

Dr. Ingle has been the backbone of our doctoral cohort. With so much transition of faculty during our studies, he has been the one constant facilitating both our first and last classes. Dr. Ingle has been a wonderful mentor for me, helping to shepherd me through a successful dissertation proposal defense, and has me in a great position to complete my dissertation on time. His feedback is timely and useful, and he always has time to meet with not only me but other students in my cohort. In the classroom, his instruction is relevant, and he provides opportunities for not only class discussion, but for us to discuss topics among ourselves. I am certain that I am not the only one who would say that Dr. Ingle is the favorite professor of the Block '17 Ed.D. Cohort.
While I have not been a student of Dr. Ingle's to date, he was one of the readers of my comprehensive exam. His feedback was thorough, thoughtful and timely as I made revisions to move forward. I'm looking forward to learning more from him this summer and in the future.
I am pleased to nominate William Kyle Ingle as my favorite educator. The longer I know him, the more I admire him. He has guided me through my doctorate journey with firm yet kind direction. He is professional, diligent, and timely in instruction/grading. He provided incredibly helpful feedback. Speaking of feedback, he blazes through assignments and returns them with valuable feedback in record time! To know him is to appreciate his sense of humor. I chose him to be the chair of my dissertation committee because he is the toughest, and I knew he would have me ready to defend when the time came. He did. He is there when I need him; his door is always open. He is well-deserving of this recognition.

I have taken Dr. Johnson's course a total of three times, and I feel that I can go to Dr. Johnson for more than just course questions, but also advice on my professional life. College of Education and Human DevelopmentMicah Kamrass is not only an expert in his profession (Legal Attorney specifically for Greek life in institutions of higher education as well as adjunct faculty), but is enthusiastic in his teachings. He made a subject that almost seemed dreadful (Legal Issues in Higher Education) an enjoyable experience. He values the instructor-student connection and made our first assignment to have a phone conversation with each student so that he can learn more about us individually rather than just educationally through coursework. For an online course, I have felt more as a part of a "community" than any other online course I have taken thus far. He offered our class section an opportunity to appear on campus (or via Skype) to have an in-class discussion on class materials. Not only did he make this two-day event, totaling in 12 hours, very content-based and worthwhile, but helped us understand and comprehend the legalities that can sometimes seem like another language. Micah displayed genuine concern for our learning and growth in his course and was always available for additional assistance, as a faculty member should be, and went above and beyond to be flexible to assist us students on our time with our needs. He kept his online classroom organized and easy to follow, which can sometimes be a rarity for online courses, and he graded fairly. Even though he graded fairly, he was always available to discuss grades in order to improve them in the future. My online classroom experience has been positively impacted by Micah and the more instructors--online or on campus--like Micah, the better online and classroom learning will be. -

Dr. Kerns was not only outstanding in the classroom, he was available to give advice about upcoming interviews for fellowship positions. I truly believe that Dr. Kerns has been the most influential professor on my entire collegiate career. Since Dr. Kerns had gone through the fellowship process, he understood the feelings that the students were having and was able to help us through the process. Not only did Dr. Kerns care about our learning in the classroom, he tried to make the examples "real-world applicable" because he understands that the reason we are pursuing this degree is to work in the healthcare sector. I believe that this recognition would show Dr. Kerns that he has made a positive impact on my life and the other students he has helped. He has been extremely supportive of his students, and when we are required to present in front of class, he creates a welcoming environment and provides constructive criticism. I believe this support and the culture of the classroom that he helps to create is why Dr. Kerns deserves to be recognized as a favorite educator. -

She makes sure we are exposed to great and provoking design, and invites design professionals to talk with her classes and even introduces students individually to them. It's easy to see that Meena is passionate about teaching and that she cares about every one of her students. I was so nervous about taking an economics course--it was unlike any class I had taken, and I knew it was going to be a struggle for me. Professor Kline made my economics experience way better than I expected. She was always willing to meet outside of class and focused on making sure her students understood the material. The layout of the class is very simple--making it easy to follow along. Professor Kline also connected the class material with real-life situations, which was probably my favorite part of Econ201.
She was my economics professor. I am a complete left-brain type thinker, so of course economics was a constant struggle for me. There were things that everyone considered to be common sense and simple solutions, but to me, it made no sense at all. Ever. And I am not a slacker student. I even repeated the course to attempt to understand. The level of accommodation and understanding she gave was unmatched. I have never been more grateful for a professor's determination in her student because I've never needed it. But I'm so thankful I came across her when I did finally need the commitment from someone other than myself.
Dr. Kline is my favorite professor because she always went above and beyond to ensure that she was giving us the best possible content for the entirety of the class. She was always well-prepared and made learning interesting and enjoyable. I highly recommend Dr. Kline to any future business student.
Dr. Kline made my learning experience truly one-of-a-kind. Her micro economics course was the first I had ever taken in the business school. After hearing many horror stories of how rigorous this course was, I had not come to class looking forward to learning economics. Much to my surprise, after the first day, I knew this was going to be one of my favorite classes I had taken at UofL. Learning from a professor who has a passion for what they are teaching, can make all the difference in a student's learning experience. I'm sure that making economics fun to learn is not an easy task, but Dr. Kline does it with stride! I had never encountered a teacher in any class who seemed to genuinely care about their students' learning experience until I had taken this course. Attending her 8 a.m. class was never a chore, because I looked forward to hearing her lectures each day and how she can relate tough economic concepts into an easy to comprehend everyday scenario seamlessly. I can't speak for other students, but Dr. Kline is truly an amazing teacher, and her class was one I will never forget.

He made arrangements for us to meet a special lady who is benefiting from relevant research and device development which relates to what Dr. Koenig is teaching us. And he arranged for us to visit two places where we could see and experience some of the research that's being done and how past research and development is being used. It's clear that Dr. Koenig wants to share with students what he's learned. He is always positive and encouraging, and pushes us to grow as engineers. He creates an environment where we are comfortable and can learn, explore and ask questions. He was available to students, stayed after class every day to answer questions and discuss anything we wanted to learn more about, and made sure that we felt comfortable doing so. He made learning about device design fun. Dr. Koenig stressed throughout the course that our primary focus is people's safety and improving quality of life. We are very lucky that he is at UofL and is teaching us how to be better engineers. We have learned so much from him. -

Dr. Kopelson has consistently been incredibly impactful on my college education and my growth as a person. Her courses have challenged my world-view, expanded my thinking, and given me a solid foundation for my future education and life experiences in general. She is always honest, straightforward, and genuine. Dr. Kopelson has had a profound impact on my critical thinking skills and development as a person, which I think is absolutely the most valuable thing to be gained from college, and yet is something not every course or every professor is able to do for you. When someone challenges me and pushes me to grow in how I see the world, they have made an invaluable impact on my life, for which I will be forever thankful, and I can say with certainty that Dr. Kopelson is one of those rare, truly incredible people who has done that for me throughout my college education. The impacts she has had on me will no doubt last a lifetime. Anyone can give you reading material or have you memorize things, but it takes a special kind of person to pick the right material, and present it in an engaging and compelling way as to make such a lasting impact on the students themselves. Years from now I may not remember every single article we read in class, but I will absolutely remember how Dr. Kopelson affected me and changed me as a person, and that, I think, is the purest form of education that exists, and one that not every educator achieves. -

After hours contact is sometimes the absolute most stressful time for a student and usually when help is needed the most. Professor Krauss seemed to be always available to make sure the individual student understood the course content and direction. Her patience and dedication to the student is clearly evident in her teaching style and manner, while taking all of the time needed to help the student. Professor Krauss has made this Spring semester one of the best semesters of my lifetime college education. Hats off and a bow to Ms. Krauss. I hope that I am able to attend additional classes with this outstanding educator.

I first met Dr. Leslie as an incoming freshman at UofL through a diversity program she coordinates. She does extensive work as an advisor to empower students from underrepresented groups and individuals interested in serving underrepresented populations as health professionals. As a professor, Katie makes the course content interactive, fun, and easy to digest. Through her assignments, she promotes the ideal that public health requires empathy and community involvement through simulating the bus route many individuals take every day. Also, Katie is a fantastic mentor. She is always willing to help me plan my career path and find volunteer contacts. I highly recommend Katie for the favorite educator award due to her drive and ambition to promote social justice and health equity. Katie is a phenomenal professor who genuinely cares about promoting ideals of health equity and inclusiveness both in the classroom and in the community. During lecture she incorporates current literature and events to increase relevance and context of the course. In addition, the experimental activity challenges students to get involved in health equity initiatives around Louisville. Outside of class, Dr. Leslie also promotes diversity and inclusivity through her position on the Health Sciences Campus. -

Brandeis School of Law"Professor Ariana Levinson of the Brandeis School of Law is my nomination for favorite educator. While there are plenty of reasons why Professor Levinson is so deserving of recognition via this award, I'd like to summarize them generally and provide a small note on each one. Professor Levinson is an exceptional educator deserving of recognition because she:
1) Cares for Students Beyond What is Required
2) Is Devoted to Creating Well-Rounded Attorneys
3) Challenges Students to Become Better
Please allow me to expand upon each of these for a moment.
Caring for Students
While all of the Brandeis staff should be commended for their unique commitment to student success, Professor Levinson cares for students beyond what is required of a teaching instructor. Dedicated to continually improving her learning environment based on student's needs, Professor Levinson takes a lot of student input into account when determining how best to teach a concept. In fact, several times this year, Professor Levinson allowed, however briefly, even the students themselves to become the teacher by allowing them to present slides, ideas, and strategies just as an attorney would do in a meeting with a client. Professor Levinson also takes a personal interest in students' lives--especially those challenged by the subject--by reaching out individually and requesting that these students take the time to speak with her personally about problems, difficulties, and questions they've continually had come up with the material. Often, these conversations go beyond the classroom and Professor Levinson checks in to make sure that her students are doing well emotionally and academically, since problem in the one can so frequently translate the other. It's the kind of individualized touch that, in the stressful environment of law school, often makes the difference between an awful day and one which is, all things considered, a little bit brighter.
Devotion to Attorney Growth
Professor Levinson's classes are unique. In one, a required part of the course involves going out into the Louisville community and actually watching a legal proceeding take place. This semester, our class went to a Workers' Compensation Benefit Review Conference. Initially, this didn't strike too many of us as fun, noteworthy, or even relevant. Yet after experiencing it, I believe that many of us, myself included, developed a deeper, more personalized perspective not just about what we'll be doing with our legal degrees but who we'll be doing it for. Law is about service and service, at its core, is always about helping people. Yet we don't usually do a whole lot of interacting with the people who will, perhaps one day, become our clients. And while there are good reasons for this, the conferences were a subtle reminder that, while everything we've been learning is critical for our future success as attorneys, much of it means little if we are not doing it, ultimately, for somebody. It's easy to forget about who we serve when we're at school learning all kinds of different legal doctrines. Undeniably, this learning is a significant part of what makes law school so rewarding to so many. But our profession demands well-rounded, sharp, empathetic attorneys who act out of a desire to serve another. And though few would disagree, the widespread acceptance this notion makes all too easy to forget in the midst of each semester. Professor Levinson's use of this unique, personal, learning opportunity was just another way in which she purposely crafts her teaching to develop well-rounded attorneys and not just legal doctrinaires.
Challenging Students to Be Their Best
Professor Levinson's classes are never easy. Each is filled with ways in which students are continually challenged academically as well as socially. Beyond simply requiring that students know the law and apply it fluidly, Professor Levinson pushes students by making sure that each, several times over the course of the semester, must respond to questions, must address significant news items which are related to the course's subject matter, and must provide to their classmates some additional knowledge about that student which their classmates did not know before taking the course with them. For bashful students like me who often feel more comfortable in silence than engaged in vigorous debate, courses like these are can be dreadful. However, Professor Levinson's courses have proven to be anything but as she creates an atmosphere of empathy and encouragement alongside academic rigor. At semester's end, and for the first time in law school, I found myself truly engaging with the course material, pushing myself to answer questions, and becoming more fully integrated (and even liking!) into an atmosphere which, while still at times daunting, used to intimidate me into silence. Challenging students is always about more than just academics--it is about developing the whole person such that they able to confidently move onward as they leave these halls becoming graduated and respected members of the legal profession. Professor Levinson understands this well and by requiring it in these crucial stages of our professional development, she pushes us to become better than average or even good as she pushes students to become their best." -

This has helped foster my leadership abilities along with the academics. Moreover, he is one amongst the rare teachers who goes out of his way to take time and clear my doubts, even on weekends. College of Education and Human DevelopmentFrom the very beginning, Dr. Longerbeam has always been very inviting and understanding. Her motto "be kind always" is something that I constantly remember as I embark on my journey to being a student affairs professional. Being that she is a new faculty member, I expected there to be some uncertainty and confusion, but she took on this role with grace and dignity, and I am so glad that I was able to take her course. Because of Dr. Longerbeam, I have learned soooo much that I will take with me in my professional career and hopefully pass along to future students. I will always appreciate her wealth of knowledge, thoughtful advice, and warm spirit.
The CSP graduate program is lucky to have Dr. Susan Longerbeam. She has not only been there for me as a professor, but also as a mentor. She is incredibly intentional, heartfelt, and honest. I am so thankful for being able to work closely with such an amazing woman. Her personality is refreshing, endearing, and bright. She is simply a joy to be around.

Dr. Lorenz is the epitome of what all professors should aspire to be like in the classroom setting.
Dr. Lorenz is a very good instructor on what is a challenging subject for many students. He is always available to assist students outside of the classroom, by email and office appointments. He is also very responsive when contacted. The information I learned is very applicable to my profession.
Dr. Lorenz is an extraordinary teacher. He makes a dreaded subject like biostatistics very easy to understand and follow along. He has excellent teaching skills and is very organized and approachable. He is one of the best faculty on the campus. -
Keith Lyle

College of Arts and SciencesDr. Lyle is a phenomenal professor and has an obvious talent for teaching. After taking two of his classes, I am absolutely convinced that he is the best professor at UofL. His teaching style diverges from static, boring lectures that unfortunately many students (including myself) are accustomed to, and instead, he makes lectures interesting and enjoyable by implementing numerous attention capturing and memory enhancing techniques into his pedagogy. As a memory researcher, he practices what he preaches, and it shows. Additionally, he truly cares for each of his students. In a class of approximately 100 students, he makes it a point to learn each and every person's name. Overall, Dr. Lyle is a gem among UofL professors. I've never had a professor more inspiring than him, and he has definitely made me rethink my career aspirations.

College of Education and Human DevelopmentWhen I reflect on my MS in Human Resource and Organizational Development, I can point to Dr. Mackenzie as my principal mentor (albeit "unofficial"). I have had the privilege of taking several of his courses, and he has enriched my overall experience and understanding of instructional design, adult learning, needs assessment, and navigating the sometimes choppy waters of the scholar-practitioner. He leads rich, informative classes in both online and face-to-face formats, implementing techniques that he teaches everyday with great enthusiasm. He makes a point to engage with all of his students on a personal level, connecting with their interests and experience, and capitalizing on that in the classroom. Much like a skilled conductor can call each musician to play the song while blending with others, Dr. Mackenzie has the ability to create a harmonious, engaging learning environment. On top of his expertise in the classroom, he is available outside for advice on projects, career development, and professional opportunities. In essence, Dr. Mackenzie has made a great impact on my experience in this program and profession. Teachers have always played an important role in shaping who I am as an individual, a learner, and a professional, and Dr. Mackenzie certainly stands out among the greats as a guiding light. As an instructor, he is attentive, encourages student participation in class, comes to lecture prepared to communicate, and inspires students to seek a deeper knowledge of the course content. Manikas takes a further step by connecting the content in lectures to the value it has for students and their post-degree goals. He offers career advice and mentions opportunities students can take now to make themselves more marketable in the workplace. His style of lecture is very engaging, and I was able to connect easily with him and the concepts he presented in class. I wholeheartedly recommend him as a professor to any student who asks, and I would be very interested to take any other courses he is the instructor for. -
Michael Mansfield

School of DentistryDr. Mansfield helped me after class remount a whole project for my TMD class with Dr. Esposito last semester. He explained how I had mounted the project wrong and helped me mount the casts in the correct occlusion for the course.
Dr. Mansfield has a true passion for teaching and for dentistry, continuously demonstrated in his willingness to help students in any way he can and his positivity in doing so. There are many wonderful faculty at the dental school, but Dr. Mansfield always goes above and beyond to not only ensure students are learning necessary material, but also to ensure they are enjoying learning. I cannot think of a day where I have not seen him with a smile on his face. I attribute much of what I have learned in lab to his constant willingness to answer questions, offer detailed explanations and provide demonstrations. Dental school is a constant challenge and source of stress, but I am grateful to be surrounded by faculty such as Dr. Mansfield who are happy to be truly invested in the success of all students.
During each lab class, there is always a smile on Dr. Mansfield as he walks around helping students with their projects. He is always ready to help anyone who asks and treats everyone with equal respect and enthusiasm. This semester was rather difficult to balance all the workload from lecture courses as well as lab courses, and Dr. Mansfield was a great help in not only helping with projects, but also teaching us about the history and importance of each project.
Dr. Mansfield, throughout my time at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, has been a consistently positive presence in preclinical courses. I have never met a faculty member who demonstrates such a high level of respect for both his students and colleagues. He is always more than willing to share his knowledge. He answers questions with enthusiasm and is always willing to hold a conversation about pretty much anything (especially if it is about music from the 70's). He makes an effort to get to know his students. Dr. Mansfield's lectures are engaging and his positive attitude, even in the most stressful of times, is infectious. -

School of NursingI have had Ms. Martin for several programs throughout the BSN program. She has been one of the kindest, most caring instructors I have ever had the pleasure of working with. She is always available. She realizes that life happens, and that a lot of us are working full-time and trying to get our degrees. She is fair. She realizes that nursing students are always a little more high-strung and anxious than the average student, and she decreases that anxiety. Above all, she demonstrates empathy, which is the foundation of nursing. Ms. Martin is an asset to the School of Nursing. -

School of MusicDr. McCord has been one of the best influences that I've had during my time at the University of Louisville. He is just as incredible of a teacher as he is a musician. He has a unique way of teaching so that I never feel as though I have "arrived," but I have also never felt discouraged in my studies. He has found different critiques lesson after lesson, year after year, and I wholeheartedly believe that I would have the same experience with him if I were to study with him for years to come. Finding a strong musical role model was an important decision in my college choice, and I believe Dr. McCord has excelled not just as a musical role model but also as a strong role model as a person. His dedication to his students is unmatched and seen by many. Who else flies into Kentucky from North Carolina to work twelve hour days back to back? He has worked tirelessly to help all of his private students with a variety of problems; he is just as willing to listen to and help with personal problems as he is to help students succeed in music. Dr. McCord is a well-rounded teacher, musician, and person. I believe he inspires all of students, not just myself, to better themselves in academics, music, and everyday life. He in turn seems to try to learn from his students and better himself still. -
Laurie "Lali" McCubbin

Dr. McCubbin have only been part of our faculty for two years, and during this time, she not only took on seven new doctoral student advisees and a handful of master student advisees in addition to her own research lab that consists of doctoral and master's level students, she also chairs a handful of dissertation committees. She goes above and beyond in her advising and mentorship to all students in the department to ensure diversity, inclusion, equality, equity, and social justice. Dr. McCubbin single-handedly advocated for program and curriculum standardization that enhances the multiculturalism of our training program. She stresses the importance of equity and social justice not only in our identities as mental health professionals, but also as people, and she models that through her own actions. Dr. McCubbin has also led the program through it is accreditation renewal process, a process which she had worked tirelessly on for a whole year to prepare. Our program has transformed so much in such a short period of time since Dr. McCubbin joined us, and we have been so fortunate and privileged to be able to learn from her and share our developmental process with her. As one of her doctoral level advisees, I have personally learned, grown, and developed as a professional and as a person because of Dr. McCubbin. I have learned to be a better psychologist, researcher, teacher, and social justice advocate because of Dr. McCubbin's guidance. I could not have asked for a better, hardworking, more thoughtful faculty to advise me through my doctoral experience.
In her two years as faculty at UofL, Dr. McCubbin has served as a tremendous role model for students at various developmental stages in their careers. She has served as a research mentor, supervisor of clinical services, and advocate for social justice. -

School of MedicineEven in my first semester of my first year at ULSD, I have already had the opportunity to learn from so many outstanding faculty but the one that stands out the most is by far Dr. Cindy Metz. Even though we only had Dr. Metz teach one section of physiology, it is clear why so many people talk about her. It takes a brilliant mind to be able to teach physiology so in depth and know the ins and outs like our instructors do, but it takes a truly special educator to make learning at this level easy. Dr. Metz's interactive lectures, well-structured notes and immense pool of out-of-class resources go above and beyond just teaching content. She is able to really get into the mind of her students and think how we think, make mistakes how we make them and show us how to correct them before we make them, which is rare. If I don't get a chance to thank Dr. Metz in person after our final, I had to let someone know what a huge fan I am of hers!
She is the only instructor that I have had so far that has made lecture PowerPoints enjoyable. Also, the way that she teaches and explains concepts is second to none.
She goes above and beyond to help all students succeed in her class. She goes the extra mile by creating active learning activities and YouTube videos to ensure that we are able to understand the material to the best of our ability. She takes time to do all the things she doesn't have to, so that her students can be the best doctors possible.
She is just an awesome professor.

My 53-year-old mother's cancer started to spread more rapidly, and she was hospitalized and put on ICU two weeks prior to Thanksgiving. I immediately returned home (Pikeville--3.5 hours away) and stayed in the hospital with my mother every day and night until she passed. Geri Morgan stayed in contact with me letting me know my options as the end of the semester approached and was also worried about my mother and would ask me how she was doing. I greatly appreciate everything Geri Morgan did to help me with some big decisions in the roughest time of my life. -

She always provides real-life, most of the time funny stories to keep us entertained and attentive during her courses, and she never has a boring class. She really feels like she is your friend and is there to help you succeed instead of just showing up and throwing big words at us expecting to just absorb it all. Her personal stories and examples are true, which make it scary for us nursing students, but there is always a valuable lesson from them, which I think is most helpful. Her bright personality and her compassion for nursing shows in her teaching, and overall, she seems to always be in a good mood and let nothing bring her down, which gives a good morale for the class. I think she is a professor who makes us look at nursing from a different perspective, not just the disease processes and nursing responsibilities, but the nursing care and human emotion aspect that we all have because we want to care for people. -

Shawn Parkhurst

College of Arts and SciencesWhile I have only had Dr. Parkhurst for this last semester of my undergraduate career, he has made one of the biggest impacts on my education. Dr. Parkhurst is one of the few educators I have had that truly cares about his students' understanding and knowledge. His material is often difficult, and his knowledge on the subjects can sometimes be overwhelming, but he ensures that all of his students are heard and respected. While in discussion-based classes that cover difficult material, I oftentimes shy away from speaking up or participating because many professors will make you feel inferior if you do not say the "right" thing. However, Dr. Parkhurst's style of teaching makes everyone feel included. Even if I have no idea what is going on, I can feel comfortable in saying so and know that he will try to help explain the concepts. He does not see students as inferior, but active contributors to the ever-growing quest for knowledge. He really listens to what we have to say, even when we sometimes are not listening to our own words. His humor, paired with his extensive knowledge, makes lectures interesting and enjoyable. I have never felt more challenged by a course or a professor during these past four years than I have by Dr. Parkhurst. He has pushed my ways of thinking, my writing skills, and my communication skills to a level that really makes me want to think harder, do better, and question more. I wish I had taken more classes with him, but am grateful for the class I did take with him. As a professor, he made me truly value my education and enjoy learning. He is a vital faculty member of the Anthropology Department as well as the University of Louisville. -

His impression was a splendid one! It was very apparent that he is passionate about his work as well as the learning opportunities for future educators. His enthusiasm can be felt by all, he clearly communicates his expectations, and he offers support when needed. I feel privileged to be a part of the M.Ed. in Autism Spectrum Disorders and Applied Behavior Analysis program here at the University of Louisville.
Dr. Pennington is second to none. In over 20 years of formal education, I have not had a teacher/professor who is more knowledgeable of the content, skillful as an instructor, or supportive of his students. Whoever said, those who can--do, those who can't--teach, obviously has not met Dr. Pennington. Besides all that, he's the front man in a hardcore rock band and that's pretty cool.
Dr. Pennington is working with me for my Summa Cum Laude project, and he has been helpful and supportive throughout the process! I was in his communication course last semester, and his instruction is engaging and his enthusiasm makes the content that much more engaging. He is a great professor, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with him!
Dr. Pennington always goes above and beyond to help me be successful. He dedicates a large portion of his time doing site visits, reading over work before it is due and is always willing to stay behind after class for people to ask for help. He is always professional, and feedback is always prompt and easy to understand. He has very high expectations for his students, however he provides the scaffolding to get us there. I have learned immensely working with Dr. Pennington.
His class is highly informative and engaging. In addition, I utilize what I learned in his course in the real world.

Dr. Roussel has made his class, Bioengineering Measurements Lab, a fun and exciting class to attend. He is always available to answer questions and explains things in a way that is easy to understand. He also references back to past labs in his explanations so as to build on things we have already learned. But the greatest thing about this professor is his enthusiasm! He is so excited about op amps and circuits and that is contagious. I have never been as excited for a lab as I am for this class, and so much of that stems from Dr. Roussel's enthusiasm for the class and his dedication to teach. He definitely deserves this award. -

Nik is so AWESOME! He was my TA this past semester for Biology 262, aka A&P; lab. As monotonous and boring as a class like this may be, Nik brought it to life. He actually made me enjoy memorizing the entire human body. Nik goes out of his way to answer any questions that you may have even if it involves looking up the answer. He also went out of his way and made extra slideshows, videos, and other resources on his own time to help us learn material that people were confused about. These were extremely helpful. Nik is just an all-around good person. He's down to earth, extremely smart, willing to drop anything he's doing to help his students, and a joy to be around. Once he graduates with his PhD, I would 110% recommend that the University of Louisville offer him a full-time position as a professor or something because he is too valuable a teacher to lose.

Professor Sweeny really challenged me to be the best I could be. Her teaching methods are excellent, as she understands the students she is teaching well, and she can really get on our level. This allows her to understand what issues we are having and help us through it. She is not a "just deal with it" professor...she truly works hard to give us everything we need to succeed. She makes herself available for help, and I personally think if anyone does poorly in her class, it is only for lack of using the resources. Her classroom demeanor is great as well. While I found her assignments plentiful, they were useful in getting me where I needed to be, and I so much appreciate the time Professor Sweeny poured into me to help me be a better writer. She completely deserves awards of any kind!
Professor Sweeny constantly goes above and beyond for her students in class and for law students. She consistently helps students with papers, career advice, and with any other issue that a student may face. Her teaching style pushes her students to their very best and helps them create the best work possible. Professor Sweeny keeps her office open all hours of the day to assist any student with their writing and other assignments. The amount of time and energy she puts forward to help with moot court teams and journals is as extraordinary as the level of commitment she displays toward her students and the law school as a whole. For these reasons, it is my honor to nominate Professor Sweeny for the Faculty Favorites Award for the Spring of 2017.
She has made me a much better writer, critical and independent thinker, and has always pushed me to perform to my highest potential.

College of Arts and SciencesAs a junior faculty member to the Department of English, Joe is an asset especially to/for graduate students on the academic job search. In addition to sharing his recent experiences and knowledge of the job search on our professionalization committee, Joe also organizes weekly Fall meetings for doctoral students on the job market to practice interview responses and get feedback from each other as well as from Joe and occasionally other faculty. This. Is. Invaluable. Not just the practice itself, but also the feedback in a safe environment in which Joe encourages us to share what went well as well as what was less clear or compelling. While I do believe that grad school is a relatively safe space itself before jumping on the already-moving tenure track, there are still too few times/spaces where people get to practice speaking about their professional interests and trajectories without evaluation, judgment, or (sometimes worse) well-meaning "advice." Those meetings were one of those time-spaces. And Joe dutifully followed them up by meeting with all of us (a cohort of 7) individually at any time, which was especially bolstering and needed before a job interview or campus visit. And Joe does all of this because he is dedicated to assisting graduate students in our program using his own knowledge and experience--not because he received institutional credit for it (service or otherwise). His time invested in us is a gift that should be noted and appreciated. It helped me see my own strengths as a teacher and scholar, and hear what I was missing/forgetting to include that I already knew, had done, or cared about. And I am confident that Joe's help contributed to the more than 20 interviews and 10 campus visits that I was privileged to receive this year.
He is absolutely one of the best teachers I have had at UofL. He cares about you as a person and helps you learn in a way you understand.
Prof. Turner is an exceptional teacher. His enthusiasm and dedication to his students is evident in his work and class instruction. He goes above and beyond to ensure his students don't feel as if they are just taking another class in order to graduate. Turner's students are learning valuable critical thinking skills which they are able to carry on past college to their careers. Furthermore, Professor Turner teaches his class in a way that engages the students with the texts and makes them excited about the topics discussed in class. To put it simply, he makes learning fun. He is available when students want to talk outside of class for reasons such as when they don't understand something or would like to discuss a topic further, when they want a second opinion on their paper topic, or advice of any sort. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to take one of his courses before graduation. Reflecting back on the numerous years I've spent at UofL, I can easily say he is one of the best, if not THE best professor I have had.
Joe is the best prof that I've ever had. He's hilarious and cares about his students. He's incredibly helpful and really wants to see everyone do well. Love his class.

Her PowerPoints are easy to follow and her tests are relevant to the material she presents. She is professional in dress and attitude and speaks to her students as equals. Ms. Waldie is one of the best instructors that I have had, and I know many others in my cohort that feel the same. -

Brandeis School of LawProfessor Walker is an incredible instructor, coach and mentor. He embodies what is best about the education profession--put students first, and work as hard as possible to help them learn, grow and succeed. Time after time, he met in person or over the phone on weekends, spring break, or evenings. When a student sends him a draft, he responds with comments. His reassuring personality encourages students to work through difficult problems and never be afraid to ask for feedback. His offers to help students extends so deeply that they bring journal notes and job applications when conferencing with him. One of the things that I most respect about Professor Walker is his outside-the-box approach to his classes. He created "Writing For Practice"--one of the most practical and important classes I've taken in law school. He shepherded us through the litigation process in a way that should be replicated in other classes. He taught us to write, edit and write again. He videoconferenced with high profile speakers from D.C. during class and played games that secretly helped the class learn and have fun simultaneously. We listened to Supreme Court oral arguments and learned about what really goes on behind the scenes at the Court. A professor would be hard pressed to have the experience and resume that Professor Walker already has at such a young age. He clerked at the Supreme Court and now takes student groups to Washington D.C. to tour every law student's mecca, as well as meet Justices, visit the White House, etc. When Justice Kagan came to UofL, she bragged on Professor Walker as he led a forum with her. Unquestionably, her recommendation carries more weight than mine! He helps with student groups and engages in public service, alongside Brandeis students. He offers his time to auction off annually to support student groups and unpaid public service jobs. Whether it's playing tennis, or having dinner with the highest bidders, it's all for a good cause. While I could continue writing about just how much Professor Walker deserves this award, I will wrap it up. As one of the most humble people I have ever met, he would likely be surprised, but honored, to receive such an award. But, I and my classmates felt obligated to nominate him in an effort to thank him for all that he has done and will continue to do for us. I hope that you will consider this application and get to know Professor Walker. The University of Louisville is beyond lucky to have him! -

Dr. Wu is my Ph.D. co-advisor. She always arranges the time for me whenever I ask for a question. She is very helpful when I'm doing my Ph.D. dissertation.
Dr. Dongfeng Wu is a great instructor and she is very knowledgeable. She brings enthusiasm and experience to every lecture that she gives. She is very approachable and understanding and always keeps an open line of communication with her students.
Dr. Wu's classes, though difficult, are ones I always know I will learn a lot from. She truly cares about both the subject matter and her students' understanding of it, which I greatly appreciate. -
Roman Yampolskiy

Dr. Yampolskiy is helpful, his class designed very easy to understand.
I came in with the mind-set that I would not like CECS 130, but with his comedic responses and thorough explanations, I was able to get through it.
He is an amazing professor.
This semester I had the pleasure of taking Dr. Yampolskiy's course on Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Yampolskiy is highly knowledgeable of the material, great at explaining intricate and complex concepts in ways that are easy to digest, and he obviously cares about his students' well-being. But these are all qualities that should be expected of professors today. What sets Dr. Yampolskiy apart from the crowd of good professors is the manner in which his course is conducted. Dr. Yampolskiy proved time and time again that what he values most is the learning--that his students understand the concepts and put forth effort to show that they have made attempts to master the material. Because of this method of teaching, I was able to focus on the material rather than deadlines. I was able to stress about how my algorithms were functioning rather than worrying if the output was sufficient for a particular grade. This is how kids learn. This is why I am nominating Dr. Yampolskiy.
I would like to explain, I am very interested in this course, and I am working hard in this class.
He has not only conducted the class in a very smart and cooperative way, but also goes out of his way to make time for any student regardless of the large class size. Kent School of Social WorkDr. Yankeelov is truly one of a kind. As one of her online research students, she always went out of her way to stay connected. She was available by email and phone, she posted weekly videos to explain the week's content, she promptly graded assignments and provided constructive feedback, and most of all, she was both hilarious and encouraging. Dr. Yankeelov knows her stuff, and she knows how to teach it. I'm thankful to have had her as a professor for the past year.
Dr. Yankeelov made a very challenging class both enjoyable and manageable. She mentored her students into creating projects that will outlast the duration of the class in their impact in the community; while also ensuring her students grew in their skill sets and professional capacity. She was truly a pleasure to have as a professor! -

Dr. Zirnheld (Dr. Z, as we call her) is a favorite instructor of our entire class (the first-year dental students). We all go to her whenever we are feeling down or when we want to blow steam. She is an incredibly relatable, caring, and down-to-earth woman. I have conversations with my peers all the time about how awesome Dr. Z is. She goes above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and to check on us when we are having rough weeks. She gives us tips on how to improve in all subjects and has even gone as far as to spend time with us after school, grabbing dinner and talking about dentistry. We love Dr. Z, and would love to see her recognized for her outstanding interpersonal skills and shared wisdoms._x000D_ -D1 Class
Dr. Z has helped my classmates many times, whether it was a class we are struggling with, or having a hard time adjusting. She has been a supportive figure at the dental school.
Dr. Z is my favorite ULSD faculty member. She goes above and beyond to make students feel welcome at the school, as well as make students feel comfortable while at school. Oftentimes, many faculty members come off intimidating which makes students feel as if they can't approach them with questions--that's not the case with Dr. Z. She doesn't talk down to students. She makes the environment fun, yet conducive to learning, and lastly, she is extremely encouraging. Dr. Jolene Zirnheld is more than deserving of this recognition!
