Denise Cumberland
Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentDr. Cumberland is exactly the type of professor/teacher/coach I need as a student in the distance learning program (MS in HROD). Her engaging style, her level of enthusiasm and preparation she puts into each and every class, and her deep practitioner-based experience, are all reasons why she should be recognized as a real asset to the university.
Before I saw this, I considered an email to the dean to recognize Denise Cumberland. She really lays out coursework in a way that is easily understandable and really cares about her students. I was late on an assignment, and she cared enough to individually reach out to me to make sure everything was ok. I have never had a professor to care as much as she has.
Dr. Cumberland displays an amazing enthusiasm for education and her students. Her energy for the course content is rivaled only by her knowledge and experience in organizational development. She is a true inspiration that drove me to achieve new levels in my education. Dr. Cumberland is truly deserving of this award.
Dr. Cumberland's combination of real work experience and knowledge of the subject made this semester one of the most rewarding academically. Her teaching style is first rate with excellent feedback that challenges me to do better. I have already incorporated some of Dr. Cumberland's methods into the intro HR course I am teaching for a small university and believe I have learned as much about how to teach successfully online as I have learned about the course subject matter.
Dr. C is a passionate and engaging educator. She makes it enjoyable to attend class after a long day of grueling deadlines. She finds ways to get the classroom involved and ensures there is active learning. She embodies the reason I came back to UofL to complete my master's.
Excellent, caring, thorough and wonderful instructor.
Dr. Cumberland did a masterful job this semester of providing feedback, communicating and keeping us on track.
Dr. Cumberland is always very helpful in and out of class. She has a thorough knowledge of the subject material and can explain in a clear manner. She is not just there to do her job but also support each student that comes to her. Each time I reach out to her, she responds almost immediately with a helpful answer to my inquiry. Dr. Cumberland deserves this recognition for going above and beyond every chance she gets.
This teacher has helped me a whole lot. -
Judith Danovitch
Psychological and Brain Sciences
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Danovitch is an incredible professor. As a graduate student, you're required to take certain courses whether or not they directly relate to your specific area of interest. I am a student whose work does not obviously relate to this topic but found her course to be interesting and engaging, and she helped me find a final topic that related to both my interests and the course material. She makes herself available to the students and is very receptive to feedback. She wants her class to be great and it shows! Of my graduate course instructors thus far, Dr. Danovitch is one of the professors with whom I've been the most impressed!
Dr. Danovitch is an amazing professor. She communicates the ideas in the lecture clearly and fluently. Each lecture is different and fun, as well as informative and entertaining.
I enjoyed her course very much. All-around great professor, knows how to keep the students engaged in class.
Judith is a phenomenal instructor who truly takes learning to the next level. She is able to take a graduate course that is not necessarily the desired topic of interest for all students, yet find a way to make the course applicable to each individual student. She demonstrates proficient knowledge of the topics, and it is clearly evident that she is well-organized and prepares for each class in order to facilitate maximal learning during each course meeting. She values each student's ideas and knowledge and welcomes student discussion. Her course assignments allow students to expand their knowledge in their own particular area of interest, and her assignments are designed to be direct applications to a successful career in psychology. All of these points in consideration, Judith has been a fantastic instructor and has positively impacted my learning this semester with aspects that can be applied to future experiences moving forward.
Judith is a wonderful professor! Her passion for teaching is refreshing to see, especially in a large class setting. Her energy keeps students attentive and engaged. She addresses students individually for their accomplishments and also encourages their hard work as "team." Overall, her teaching style makes a large lecture feel like a small, personal classroom setting.
Loved her class! I will definitely take what I learned in Child Development with me throughout the rest of my life.
Dr. Danovitch is a wonderful professor. She has the best ways of teaching so we are able to fully understand concepts. Her examples for different concepts are real life, and we can relate too! Her knowledge on child development is never ending, so she always is able to answer our questions fully and clearly! Overall, I would recommend her to anyone and really encourage people who are looking for a psychology class to take her course!
She is a great professor!
I wish that all teachers were more like Dr. Danovitch. From the beginning of the course, she tried to teach us the best ways to study, showing that she actually cares about the students and wants them to do well, while still keeping the class challenging. Dr. Danovitch also organizes the material in an easy-to-understand way, has multiple outlets for asking and receiving help, and asks for feedback on her teaching style. She puts herself in the her students' shoes, trying to make sure that the learning environment is best suited for them and adjusts her teaching style to what works best for the students.
I loved Dr. Danovitch's class. She obviously knows her material but is also great at making it understandable and relatable. Additionally, she also genuinely seems to care for her students and their success.
She is a great professor who really cares about her students and her subject. -
Ayman El-Baz
Bioengineering
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringDr. El-Baz's courses have been a few of my most challenging courses yet, and he makes himself very available to help students in and out of the classroom. If I don't understand something, he patiently works with me until I completely understand. He also supports students' activities outside of school, and as a student-athlete, it makes a huge difference knowing my professor is supportive of my athletic career as well as my academic career.
Dr El-Baz works extremely hard to make our department as great as it can be. He cares about the students which is hard to come by in college with most professors. In class, he takes time to make sure that we understand what is going on, and his lectures do a great job of conveying what we need to learn. He also gives projects that relate to real-world bioengineering, which helps when trying to apply what I've learned.
Fascinating teacher with a lecture method that ensures a full understanding of the subject material. Dr. Ayman was positively the best professor I have ever had. He is an expert in Medical Imaging, teaches excellently, and cares for his students. I wish I could take him every semester.
Dr. El-Baz has focused greatly on his students and improving the Bioengineering Department for his students for the past academic school year. He is constantly asking for feedback on how to improve the department to our liking.
Dr. El-Baz is my research mentor. He has guided me in my journey to researching in bio-imaging, as well as my medical school pursuits. He has always given me great advice on being focused and maintaining my GPA, as well as being a part of extracurricular activities. Through his guidance and the research opportunities he provided me, I was able to receive a co-op from Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab. I don't see anyone else more deserving of this honor than Dr. El-Baz. Please consider him for the highest honor.
Dr. El-Baz in knowledgeable and has nice attitude toward students.
Dr. El-Baz is an exceptional instructor. He is a very knowledgeable scientist/researcher, and in the same time, a very skillful teacher which is not very common. He keeps his audience alert by challenging their minds. He makes sure that the roots of what he is explaining are clear. He is very keen on helping his students. He offers all of what he knows. You can say that he is a magician who doesn't mind explaining all of his tricks to everyone. As a physics PhD student, I had no trouble following his high-level bioengineering class. I registered for his classes to learn some skills that I need in my research career in physics. I got more than what I expected. I strongly nominate him as my favorite educator.
Dr. El-Baz is really the most active faulty member I have ever seen in my life. He has enough experience to lead me the right way in both classes of study and research. Seriously, he can manage and lead individuals and teamwork as well.
Dr. El-Baz is a god among mere mortals. He is a leading expert in the field of Medical Imaging and cares enough to truly impart his knowledge to his students. He is a very approachable man and one of the greatest professors I have ever had the pleasure to learn from. Words cannot describe the respect I have for him. -
Stephan Gohmann
Economics
College of BusinessI really enjoyed his class and teaching methods.
His drive and passion in the classroom is unparalleled to any professor I have had.
I like Professor Gohmann's teaching style, and he has great knowledge for the content.
Enjoyed his lectures.
Gohmann was a great professor, very insightful, and I felt like I retained more information from his class than other classes I have taken.
Professor Gohmann's "Capitalism and Economic Freedom," in my opinion, should be on every student's "must take this one" list! To be a responsible member of society, it takes a clear understanding of the differences in economic structures and the results they produce. The purpose of higher education is to obtain better tools that help human beings improve their daily lives and decision-making. Everyday life is more pleasant when you thoroughly understand the systems you choose to live under. Excellent instructor!
He teaches an excellent course (Econ 375) that truly makes you think and broadens your horizons.

Courtney Abboud
Metropolitan College
Undergraduate AffairsShe is not a professor, but is employed by UofL just the same. She works in the Metropolitan College office in the Houchens Building; she has helped me realize and understand my path after my undergraduate degree is finished. -
Jamie Abrams
Brandeis School of LawProfessor Abrams is the best part of law school. She brings such warmth and thoughtfulness into the classroom, which makes it so much easier to want to learn. She has high expectations of her students, but we all try so hard to make sure we don't disappoint her. -
Brittany Adams-Pope
Equine Industry Program
College of BusinessShe makes every class special and fun!
I love Dr. AP because of how she interacts with her students. She allows us to come into her office and tell her our life story and issues and listens to ALL of it, and she helps us with any questions or problems we may have. She is hands down my favorite professor. -
V. Joshua Adams
English
College of Arts and SciencesProf. Adams always had a fun and discussion-filled class. Every day was a learning day. His best quality was creating a classroom that everyone felt comfortable speaking and learning from him and each other.
Very straightforward teacher, shares ideas and entertains students' ideas, if they are solid, and frankly explains why they are weak, if they are not solid.
I have had him for three English classes in a row. He makes the material come alive and breaks it down for everyone to understand. He has a great sense of humor and is very knowledgeable about the material. -
Benjamin Adams
Biology
College of Arts and SciencesMax was a great TA! -
Eston Adams
Fine Arts
College of Arts and SciencesI always appreciated Professor Adams for the passion he demonstrated for the subject matter he taught us. He genuinely cares about his students and wants us to get the best possible understanding for the material that he teaches. He even went as far as to get permission from the university to take us on a field trip to a church that demonstrated a lot of the artistic styles and history that we had been studying at the time. The head of the church was also present and gave us a lot of interesting and valuable information about the artistic pieces and the church itself. I don't know if Professor Adams will make top 4, but he definitely deserves the appreciation. He cares about his students and the material that he teaches and does not strike me very much as the type hungry for recognition. It's a privilege to be taught by a professor that chooses to touch the lives of students. However, it's a blessing to have a professor who not only wants to touch the lives of others and teach, but who also does it with such passion that it becomes a memory that will be carried throughout a student's college career. Thank you, Professor Adams. -
Jill Adelson
Counseling and Human Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentDr. Adelson is a supportive and engaging professor, and she continues to be a role model for leadership for students at the University of Louisville and the students of JCPS. She is extremely knowledgeable, and her enthusiasm for education makes her a valuable mentor for each student who has the opportunity to have her as a professor. I, and many other students, appreciate the knowledge Dr. Adelson has given us and the time she has invested in our graduate studies. -
Izumi Agata
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Agata is absolutely fantastic. Japanese is a difficult language to begin learning, but she made it so easy and fun. She is the best teacher I have ever had! -
Meera Alagaraja
Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentI nominate Dr. Meera Alagaraja for Faculty Favorite for Spring 2016 because she is a caring and compassionate professor. She is cool under pressure and very knowledgeable in her field of study. She challenged me to push myself when working on my HAT for ELFH 442 and wouldn't settle for anything less. Professor Alagaraja exemplifies what professors today should be--patient, tolerant, but stern as well. She's open and honest, and that's what I liked most about her. I think she deserves to be a recipient of the Faculty Favorite Award because she's authentic and sweet.
Dr. Meera Alagaraja is an outstanding faculty member. I had the opportunity to meet her last semester in one of the classes of my master's degree program in Human Resource Leadership. She is a dedicated instructor, has deep knowledge in the Human Resources field, and possesses excellent teaching skills. She is highly motivated and inspires students to continually pursue knowledge and new learning experiences. Personally, I am very thankful for all of the support she has given me. I am an international student, and adapting to the program has been a challenge for me, not only because of the nature of the course itself, but because I have had to adapt to a new culture, language, and form new connections. Dr. Meera has consistently provided me with quality feedback, which has enhanced my experience as a student in an immense way. I feel that she has gone above and beyond her duty and has encouraged me to continue doing good work and pursue the achievement of my goals. I appreciate the attention she has given to me as a student, and I hope she can be recognized for her dedication and strength as a faculty member.
The beginning of my ELFH journey was a bit of a rocky one. In the beginning of this semester, I had serious doubts of my ability to complete this program and really started to feel that I had made a terrible decision. One night after my 442 class, I stayed after to ask Dr. Meera about the concerns I had for her class. She really took the time to listen to me and explain the expectations of the program, not just her class but the whole program, to me. She is, without a doubt, why I am still in this program. She made certain I knew that if I had any questions I could ask her. She made herself very available to me as a student and to my class as a whole. It is my belief that we were very fortunate to have an instructor of her caliber. -
Tammy Albers
Education Advising Center
College of Education and Human DevelopmentTammy went out of her way to make sure I had the funds I needed to stay in school this semester. If it were not for Tammy's advocacy and assistance, I would not have made it this far in the OLL program. -
Sara Alvarez
English
College of Arts and SciencesI've known Ms. Sara Alvarez since my freshman year of college, as I had her as an instructor my freshman year. I haven't had her as an instructor this semester, but I have kept a strong connection with her outside of the classroom. Ms. Alvarez is a very hardworking person, and she strives to expand the diversity amongst individuals on and off campus. While I didn't get to nominate her at the time, I believe now would be a perfect time to nominate her for all that she has done. -
Robert Amchin
Academic and Professional Studies
School of MusicDr. Amchin is definitely a faculty favorite among all music education students. He invests in his students, taking the time to make sure that we are learning, growing, and succeeding. Whether I need clarification on an assignment, or just someone to tell me to "hang in there," I know that I can count on him. He's the easiest person to reach and the best person to have on your team. My wonderful experiences at UofL have been greatly influenced by the work and mentorship of Dr. Amchin. -
Betty Amick
Middle and Secondary Education
College of Education and Human DevelopmentJean's enthusiasm was one of the reasons to go to class every Thursday. Her teaching style, dedication, and motivation made our course really enjoyable. She has made me a better teacher and love (even more) my profession. -
Delaina Amos
Chemical Engineering
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringShe is extremely busy dealing with things in the graduate department, but she does a great job to facilitate learning in CHE 305. This course is extremely difficult and time consuming. Yet, she does a great job at finding time for her students by answering our questions and dealing with many of my ungrateful classmates. This class could be impossible if she didn't put the effort she does into the course, but luckily we have her to teach us the foundations of chemical engineering. -
Becky Antle
Kent School of Social WorkVery knowledgeable of subject. Enjoys teaching and listening. Being a Navy vet, I highly recommend this class. -
Mary Ashlock
Communication
College of Arts and SciencesShe was a wonderful professor. She made class fun, interesting, and engaging. I would definitely recommend her to a friend.
I wanted to be a communication major since this summer, and I had the wonderful opportunity of meeting this amazing woman this fall. Not only was my 9 am class this semester the best, but I looked forward to going. She gave me a different perspective on my life and made me realize that there still are teachers who deeply care about students. She truly is a joy to have as a teacher and made class so fun and exciting. If you ever went to class with coffee in one hand, half asleep and just not looking forward to your day, you would leave fully awake, happy, and ready to tackle whatever comes your way. Mary Ashlock truly is a great representation of what I would like to be when I get older--energetic, kind, and full-spirited.
I met Mary Ashlock this past semester when she took over the Communication Internship program. She is an amazing person who really cares about the students. When I came to her with a big problem I was having, she sat down with me and helped me work through it, and thanks to her, I was able to complete my senior internship even though I had enrolled past the deadline. She was empathetic to my situation, and we connected through that experience. She motivated me to succeed when it seemed like everything else in my life was going wrong. I hope someday when I'm older, wiser, I will be as cool as Mary Ashlock.
She really helped me realize my love for communication and helped me realize that double majoring would be beneficial to me!
The most caring and influential professor of this semester. She's taught me so much and the importance of learning communications, as well as other important things in life. -
Ronald Atlas
Biology
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Atlas made my microbiology class manageable and enjoyable. He made it interesting to learn instead of just giving us the info and the tests. -
Sundar Atre
Mechanical Engineering
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringHe's a lively personality in class and takes a genuine interest in his students' learning. -
Geoffrey Bailey
Counseling and Human Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentDr. Bailey has been one of the most pivotal and informative instructors I have had at UofL thus far. He takes the time to get to know his students on a personal level and is always open and willing to share information about the field of Higher Education. He has allowed me to open my mind and think critically about issues facing college students today and in the future. I believe Dr. Bailey is an essential part of our program and has provided a foundation for students to be successful in our field. I am thankful for his expertise and willingness to share his experiences with students both inside and outside of the classroom. -
Lluís Baixauli-Olmos
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Baixauli-Olmos does everything he can--and more--to ensure his students' success, both in and outside the classroom. His classes pose a great challenge, and his lessons are connected so well that at the end of the semester, I truly felt that I had acquired a new set of skills. He is definitely one of the best teachers I have ever had. -
Charles Baker

Richard Balkin
Counseling and Human Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentDr. Balkin is very passionate about the field of counseling and encourages his students to get involved in the profession through professional conferences, etc. He gave me the opportunity to present at the Evidence Based School Counseling National Conference with himself and other students. It was a great experience.
Dr. Balkin has extensive and highly valuable knowledge about the counseling profession. He is always willing to share the knowledge that he has with students and help them prosper in the counseling field. Dr. Balkin cherishes student learning and is helpful in explaining any difficult concepts. -
Sanaya Bamji
Biology
College of Arts and SciencesSanaya is an amazing person and instructor. Throughout the semester in our genetics lab, she was bubbly, polite, funny, and just awesome in general; all while maintaining a professional attitude. She made the lab fun and educational. She was always willing to help and extended her time to us outside of the classroom and after labs. She is truly an inspiration, and I hope to one day be as smart and fun as Sanaya. It makes me sad that this is her last semester teaching, but I'm also very happy I had the chance to meet Sanaya. I won't forget her or our fun times in genetics labs! I wish her the best of luck with her future pursuits! -
Ansyn Banks

Office of the ProvostA -
Kathy Baumgartner
Epidemiology and Population Health
School of Public Health and Information SciencesDr. Kathy Baumgartner has given me so much insight on how to collect and analyze data. I can also talk to her about professional and personal matters. I look forward to her advice. She gives all of the students in the Epi Department her undivided attention. Not only is she a great instructor, she is also an associate dean. She also finds time to write grants for the department. She has a huge heart, great teaching philosophy, and I never mind doing work for her class. That's huge! As a student, we hate studying and completing homework, but everything she teaches us is for a specific purpose. -
Blake Beattie
History
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Beattie made history come alive for us students! Always available to discuss content and is warm and friendly--an excellent professor!
Dr. Beattie is a great lecturer. Not only is he a very clear communicator, but he is also very entertaining and tells the events as if it is a story. This helps garner interest in the material instead of dozing off. Dr. Beattie also returns grades with clear feedback instead of little or no feedback, which is something not a lot of teachers do. -
Thomas Berfield
Mechanical Engineering
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringDr. Berfield's level of dedication to his students is tremendous. He shows his passion for teaching others in every class, and it reflects on how students perform. He goes out of his way to promote understanding of material and how it relates to the real world. His most notable trait however is his willingness to provide assistance to students for other classes.
"Does everyone know what a hot dog is?"

"Does everyone know what a hot dog is?"
"Does everyone know what a hotdog is?" -
Matt Bergman
Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentMatt always goes above and beyond to reach and teach his students!
Good professors are also good learners; for example, they learn through their reading, by listening to their students, by participating in a variety of professional-development activities, by sharing ideas with their colleagues, and by reflecting on classroom interactions and students' achievements. Good teaching is, therefore, dynamic, reflective, and constantly evolving. Dr. Bergman exudes an enthusiasm for OLL subject matter and a desire to share it with everyone around him. He demonstrates an ability to transform and extend knowledge, rather than merely to transmit it; he draws on his knowledge of the subject, his knowledge of learners, and general pedagogical knowledge to transform the concepts of the discipline into terms that are understandable to OLL students. Good teachers show respect for their students; they are interested in both their professional and their personal growth, encourage their independence, and sustain high expectations of them. At the expense of sounding hyperbolic, I feel Dr. Matthew Bergman is to the Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development as Socrates is to Greek philosophy. I'll never be able to repay him for the education I received and the benefits I will reap from its applications to my life. -
Simona Bertacco
Comparative Humanities
College of Arts and SciencesExcellent instructor who strives to makes the classroom an environment that makes students think beyond their preconceptions! -
Amanuel Beyin
Anthropology
College of Arts and SciencesHe is the best of all the teachers I have ever known. My professor was always on time, ready, and organized in everything he teaches. I didn't want to miss the class because, not only did I enjoy the class, I also take everything I have learned and apply it to solve the problem on hand. I am a better and smarter person now because of his lecture. -
Jennifer Bobo
Kent School of Social WorkJennifer is always very supportive and encouraging. She stayed engaged with her students consistently in the online course and went above and beyond in her feedback. She is a fantastic educator, and her work and presence has made a huge difference in the graduate career of her students. -
Randi Bolding
Academic and Professional Studies
School of MusicShe cares about the success of every student, and she takes tremendous pride in her ensemble, the Singing Cardsmen. -
Brad Bowman
History
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Bowman presented one of the most engaging history classes I have ever had the pleasure of attending. I believe I have gained more knowledge on ancient civilizations in his class than in any other history class I have taken. I love history but often find that professors and instructors tend to have issues presenting the information in a manner that makes the student want to learn. Many times the information is given in a very "textbook" style, "Remember this date, these people had disagreements, next week we will discuss..." I found Dr. Bowman's class to be much more focused on how each event we discussed related to the next. He provided me with how a specific historical event connected to the bigger world picture and influenced changes that would lead to the next event. I appreciated the story involved that motivated behaviors. I cannot thank him enough for giving me the opportunity to fall in love with history all over again.
Engaged. Amiable. Passionate. Smart. Easy-going. Approachable.
Dr. Bowman is by far the most engaging professor I have had at UofL. He is deeply knowledgeable about his field and really goes out of his way to present history in a way that is relevant to how we perceive the world as it is today. After taking his History 105 course, I decided to major in History in addition to my major in Political Science. -
Elizabeth Bradley
Mathematics
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Bradley has been absolutely phenomenal as a teacher this year. I have her for Math 190, and she has made the class so much more than one would expect it to be. I am not good at math. It is a simple fact that I just do not have a math-oriented brain. I was dreading this class because it is hard for me to grasp math concepts. Dr. Bradley not only was kind beyond what she "needed" to be, but she was funny and kept the class interesting. I may not get an "A" in the class, but I am not feeling disheartened. I would recommend Dr. Bradley to anyone and everyone. She is an amazing teacher, and she can connect with you on a level that a lot of other teachers can't. I haven't taken her final yet, but I know that if I don't do well it is on me because she has gone above and beyond to help me and everyone else in her classes succeed.
Very, very, very understanding. -
Ellen Brehob
Mechanical Engineering
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringAlways welcoming of students. -
Derrick Brooms
Sociology
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Brooms goes above and beyond. He is knowledgeable and has authority in his area of teaching. I highly recommend his class to anyone who is able to take it. It has changed my world-view, and I wish for others to be able to have the same experience. -
David Brown
Physics and Astronomy
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Brown is willing to drop everything to help any student in the department, even if the student is not in one of his courses. He will do his best to help a student with any questions or problems they are having, even if the problem does not have to do with physics. -
Lorrel Brown
Medicine-Cardiology
School of MedicineThe best professor of second-year medical school. She took full control of the cardiology section and did a phenomenal job. Learning from her was a pleasure.
Dr. Brown worked tirelessly to deliver one of the best blocks of lectures I have experienced so far at the medical school. Her organization and enthusiasm for the material made learning difficult topics much easier, and I am confident that she has helped my classmates and myself to be extremely well prepared for our future as physicians in understanding the core concepts of cardiology. She is motivated, intelligent, and a wonderful teacher! -
Britney Broyles
Comparative Humanities
College of Arts and SciencesShe was a great teacher, very organized and made the topics we discussed interesting. We also had four readings assigned to us and the books she chose were awesome and related to the course. I was never bored in this class, and I am glad I had a teacher like Professor Broyles. She inspired me to possibly minor in literature. -
Jennifer Brueckner-Collins
Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology
School of MedicineNever have I had a professor with such a remarkable grasp of her subject of expertise AND a genuine interest in and concern for her students. It is a rare and wonderful combination of traits in a teacher--qualities undoubtedly embodied in Dr. Brueckner. She is a gifted teacher and a kind, generous person, and I feel fortunate to have had her as a professor, even if only for a part of my first semester of medical school.
She is hyper-prepared and dedicated to making the subject understanding for us, not just easy for her to lecture about.
Dr. Brueckner is not only a fantastic lecturer, she is so warm and welcoming to all students. She always made it clear that she was there for students and welcomed them to contact her if they were struggling. She went above and beyond to actually reach out to initiate contact with students who were struggling after each exam and tried to make sure that we all succeed. It is clear that this is not just a job to her, but she really cares about each one of our success.
Dr. Bruckner went above and beyond to help all of the first-year students adjust to medical school and help us learn the challenging information she was presenting to us.
I have hardly ever seen a professor try as hard as Dr. Brueckner does to make sure she is doing everything she can to help her students understand the material. Even when hordes of students are gathered around her in lab to ask her questions, she answers every question that comes at her with enthusiasm and a smile on her face.
Dr. B is amazing. She is excited about teaching, she seeks out students that may be struggling, and she is always available. I cannot say enough great things about this professor. She truly got our class started off to a great medical career, and I'm sad to think that we won't ever have her as an instructor again or even someone comparable.
Dr. Brueckner's instruction time is never simply flat lecturing. She actively engages her students by posing questions and relating the material to real-life (clinical) applications. She is very approachable and friendly towards students, making quite the effort to learn students by name (even in a lecture hall of 150+ students). -
Brenda Brueggemann
English
College of Arts and SciencesIn structuring a course for new writing teachers in the composition program at UofL, Brenda took so many contexts into consideration. She valued our time, gave us opportunities to present together and to each other, asked us to draft and share our "teacher work" with other newbies, and fostered collaboration within and across multiple groups. Brenda was also hugely encouraging of, and available for, new teachers at any time which is no small feat as a Writing Program administrator, new faculty member, and actively generative scholar. In short, Brenda supported us in generous and much-appreciated ways and, just as importantly, ensured that we supported each other through the structures of the program and of the course. -
David Buckley
Political Science
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Buckley makes himself available to students to seek advice, ask questions, and any other advice. He teaches in a way that both challenges and leaves room for growth. He opens the class to discussion, questions, and overall participation. Although I only had Dr. Buckley for one class, he has made me feel like I can come to him for future advice, which is a great relief. -

Julie Bunck
Political Science
College of Arts and SciencesShe is a very good teacher who presents material in a clear and understandable way. On top of being able to present material clearly, she also presents material in a way that doesn't make you want to fall asleep. 10/10, my best instructor this semester! -
Christy Burge
Accountancy
College of BusinessRelates everything in class to real-world examples and prepares students for the future. Wants to see students succeed and deeply cares about the students and the university.
I was really struggling, and she has always tried to make herself available to her students. I remember one day toward the beginning of the semester I was trying to do an income statement and couldn't get it to balance, and she called me and tried to help me the best she could over the phone. That kind of dedication towards students really means a lot because she is not just focused on research like most professors at the university are.
She is truly one of the only teachers I have had here that cares about the futures of her students. Not only is she a great teacher and knows her information well, she makes it clear her main job is to help her students get jobs and become successful. You can't ask for a better teacher with her beliefs and attitude.
Christy Burge is an amazing teacher--she has real-world experience, knowledge, and a student-centered outlook. As an adult returning student, she was available two nights in a row to talk with me on the phone about my career goals and trajectory. I appreciate all she's done for me and other students to help us succeed.
She will go above and beyond to help you understand the content. Not only is she astounding when teaching you accounting, but she also teaches you invaluable life lessons. -

Anne Caldwell
Political Science
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Caldwell is not only an astounding educator, but an amazing role model for any student involved in the LGBT community. The class I took with her, Queer Politics (POLS 323), was far and away the best course I have taken thus far at the University of Louisville. Professor Caldwell was also an interview subject of mine for a research paper I wrote regarding transgender bathroom rights, and she made a significantly positive impact on this project. Professor Caldwell goes above and beyond as an educator to offer her students the opportunity to grow not only as students but as individuals AND as activists in the classroom. She offers the opportunity for EVERY student to feel safe, welcomed, and open to speak their opinion on any given subject, no matter their involvement or identifiers related to the subject matter. I will most definitely, to say the least, be looking to take courses with her in the future.
Dr. Caldwell is perhaps the most insightful scholar I have encountered at the University of Louisville. Her curriculum is always diverse and deeply layered with complex themes she is uniquely capable of developing and communicating across the length of the semester. Dr. Caldwell's lectures never fail to deliver a powerful combination of history, theory, everyday life and an urgency for thinkers ready to put themselves out there. Important conversations erupt into her students' relationships and carry on in inside and on, out the door of her classroom. It is an incredibly rare academic environment. She meets students at their own personal level, in their own lives. Her attention to the individual abilities and needs of students in the flexibility of discussions, assignments, and her teaching. It is apparent that Dr. Caldwell has a deep and personal interest in both the learning and well-being of her students. Folks of all academic backgrounds and levels of experience can find immense value in Dr. Caldwell's classes. Dr. Caldwell has been a defining feature of my experience at UofL, and I cannot be certain that I would be nearly the thinker, student, and even person that I am today had I not experienced the growth and community to be found studying under Dr. Caldwell. -

Berta Calvert
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesOne of the most passionate and caring instructors I've ever had the pleasure of knowing in my entire educational experience. She truly cares about the success of her students and encourages them to take charge of your own learning, guiding them along the way.
So fun and helpful!
Very helpful and sweet. Motivates you to keep learning even when it's hard.
Professor Calvert is a wonderful instructor! She insists that her students try their best and is more than willing to help both in and out of class. She is always smiling and cheerful and makes an 8 a.m. class one I look forward to going to. My only complaint is that she can't teach every Spanish class! -

College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Cantrell is awesome. She made class fun, and I am always looking forward to seeing what kind of shirt she is wearing. She is willing to help us out if we need an extra day to make up a test that we need to take.
Prof. Cantrell was by far the most influential person I met in my first semester. She continued to always push me as a student, while also always encouraging me to continue to push myself in all facets of my life. She is, without a doubt, the best professor and person I met this semester. -

Ying Kit Chan
Fine Arts
College of Arts and SciencesYing Kit Chan, MFA, took the teaching position for the Foundation Art Concept and Method class 2016 spring semester. He introduced all the students to a variety of media, and the importance, and place of meaning behind, and within the work. He also required a solid amount of Exhibit experience and perusal with write ups to introduce us to how work is viewed and critiqued by others. I believe all of us had an opportunity to discuss and relate important topics of our own choice to each other and review each other's work as well. Our horizons were expanded by the material we were introduced to and the discussions that revolved around the works. -
Raymond Chastain
Physics and Astronomy
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Chastain really helped me with my first semester at UofL. He was there for me when I was struggling and was always very open to discuss anything with me. His lectures were exciting to me, and he was very outgoing with the way he taught. I looked forward to his class every week, and it was a very enjoyable class.
Best teacher I've ever had. Awesome educator. And keeps class interesting.
Best physics professor.
He went above and beyond to help all of his students, especially in a difficult semester where, due to the natural sciences building being under renovation, there was no physics learning center. I have dyscalcula, and he even met up with me on his own time to help me understand the content--all without tire or complaint. He is truly one of the greatest teachers at UofL.
As a post-baccalaureate student, I have had many professors throughout the years, and this is the first time I've been truly compelled to nominate one of my educators for an award such as this. I graduated from a small university where my largest class was 17 students, and I was nervous about learning efficiently at an institution where classes were much larger. Dr. Chastain, a professor I have now had for two semesters in a row, is a professor that enables his students to achieve due to his personality, teaching methods, and ability to cater to each of his students, despite a large class size. He knows names, can explain things differently for different students, and creates a classroom environment that makes my peers and I eager to attend his class and achieve our goals. Dr. Chastain is phenomenal, and this University is incredibly lucky to have him in their arsenal. I hope he makes the top 4 so I can write more about him. Thank you for your consideration.
Dr. Chastain has been the best professor I have had the honor of taking in my short time at the University of Louisville. In my class of over 75 students, he knew every person by name and would take as long as every student needed to explain a problem or concept. His teaching methods are very effective, and I think they should be implemented in all introductory courses. He had me talking and solving problems with my peers; I asked questions and was able to understand complex material in the matter of an hour and fifteen minutes. If I had extra questions, he did not mind staying after to help me understand, or set up extra office hours that fit into both of our busy schedules. In his teaching, it was clear how passionate he was, not only about physics, but also found immense fulfillment in passing along the understanding to the next generation of students. The environment that was set up for us to learn in was above exceptional; it was versatile and scholarly, and exactly what students needed to thrive in a difficult introductory-level class.
I normally don't do this. As a pre-med major, many of my professors don't make too much of a personal impact on me, but this man is the jewel of the pre-med curriculum. He made physics fun. He made it applicable to my life, and he made me feel SMART. I can't tell you how crucial that is as a student with a challenging major such as biology. So many times in class, I have felt defeated or lacking intelligence, but this man made me open my eyes to my gift. Dr. Chastain is loved by every single student in his lecture hall, and he goes out of his way to make every single student of the 120 feel important. This school is so blessed to have a professor like him in a department as difficult as physics, and he deserves every bit of recognition possible!!!!!
One of the top teachers in his field. Should be recognized for his modern and effective teaching methods.
In my opinion, the best professor at UofL! Really cares about his students and his students' education.
Dr. Chastain is one of the best teachers I've had in my college career. He makes a difficult subject relatable to the learner and teaches material in an engaging way. He also is very approachable and always willing to answer any questions from students.
Dr. Chastain has made physics tolerable, and his class is interesting. I have learned a lot this semester, and he has made the class more fun.
Dr. Chastain is truly one of the most remarkable teachers I've ever had the privilege to have. Physics is not the most accessible subject for many people, including myself, however, Dr. Chastain explains this topic in a way that makes it very clear and makes mastery of this subject obtainable, even for those who would not consider themselves naturally gifted in this area. In addition to his talent as a lecturer, Dr. Chastain also goes above and beyond what is required of him in order to ensure his students' understanding. He creates and posts supplemental videos as a precursor to each class, he hosts office hours nearly every day and is always incredibly gracious about helping his students to fill in gaps in their knowledge, and despite having roughly 100 students in each of his classes (I believe he has four classes this semester), he knows all of his students by name. Dr. Chastain is a huge asset to the University of Louisville and should most definitely be a faculty favorite this semester!
Physics isn't always a class that people get excited about signing up for, and honestly I didn't either, but Chastain makes the class much more enjoyable, and I believe he is very personable and genuinely cares about his students, whereas the other Speed School professors don't seem like they care at all.
Professor Chastain is a really great teacher. I took physics in high school and really struggled to understand the concepts, but taking his physics 221 and 222 were an entirely different experience. He is accessible to students outside of class. He lectures well and keeps students engaged, so class is interesting and helpful. I think the best part of the way professor Chastain teaches is that he is very fair. Physics 221 and 222 are both difficult courses; his tests are challenging, and it takes a lot of work to perform well. However, if you do your work, go to class, and study hard, you will be successful.
Having been in Dr. Chastain's class the past two semesters, I've come to appreciate his pre-lecture videos, online homework and quizzes, and in-class group work. His class requires effort and dedication to succeed. I've learned more than I could have imagined about physics. Dr. Chastain is a wonderful professor and knows what he's talking about when it comes to physics. We need more educators at the University like Dr. Chastain.
Great professor who really took his time teaching students. Easy to talk to in and out of class and knew how to get his ideas across to us.
Not only was Professor Chastain able to effectively teach the material in our physics course, he somehow made it fun and entertaining. He is consistently available via office hours or email and is one of the most approachable professors that I have ever had.
He's a great professor, probably due to the fact he actually has a teaching degree. He makes a very difficult subject fun and easy. -

Julianne Chung
Philosophy
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Chung is an excellent new addition to the university. Her uniquely down-to-earth teaching methods bring a warm atmosphere to the classroom and facilitated my comprehension of the often esoteric components of philosophy. In addition to being an effective educator, she was a stalwart companion and a magnificent conversationalist. Her ability to meet up during office hours to provide individual assistance with material was greatly appreciated. All things considered, I believe she is very deserving of recognition. -
Dewey Clayton
Political Science
College of Arts and SciencesVery knowledgeable about the material he taught and is genuinely concerned about our learning. Dr. Clayton has been such a great inspiration to me. I decided to return back to school after graduating from the University in 1974. Dr. Clayton has made my return quite enjoyable. Coming back to school amongst students much younger than me can be trying. However, Dr. Clayton has made me feel welcomed and has encouraged me along the way. For this I truly thank him. -
Tammy Clements
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesShe made ASL 101 the most enjoyable class I had my first semester here at UofL and inspired me to keep taking ASL courses as long as I'm a student here. Professor Clements' teaching helped peak my interest in Sign Language and languages as a whole, and now I'm learning five different languages, and I owe a lot of that to her for pushing me to keep learning, even when it gets frustrating and hard.
She donated so much of her time to my class and really helped us understand the language and culture behind American Sign Language. She gave up time on the weekends, as well as time during the week, to help us and give us the opportunity to achieve a high grade in the course. She also works a full-time job at DuPont Manual, and if I ever had a question or needed help on an assignment, she would come over to campus on a break or as soon as she was done for the day at Manual and be so willing to help. Even though she could communicate through speaking, she pushed us to learn sign language. Even when we got frustrated that we didn't understand what she was signing, she wouldn't resort back to English. She would help us persevere and learn ASL while leaning on using English to communicate. She pushed us, but it paid off in the end. She has helped me truly find my compassion and love for ASL, and by taking her class, it helped me decide what I want to do for a career, as well as add another major and be a communications and ASL double major. I am so appreciative of her hard work and dedication to me and my class this semester! She is one amazing person, and I hope she receives an award for it!
She embodies what Louisville is all about: greatness. She is what separates this school from others. I changed my major to become a teacher, after I saw how she positively impacted lives through her profession.
Tammy Clements was an excellent instructor for the introduction to ASL course at the university. She was always patient with students who were new to the language, and she came up with creative ways to explain topics in the classroom. -

Fabian Crespo
Anthropology
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Crespo is an engaging teacher who brings multidisciplinary perspectives to topics in class. The class is really interesting because its format is usually a discussion rather than a boring lecture. Dr. Crespo ties in his outside research, other interests and anthropological background into the material to show us how it is applicable to the real world and to distance the class from traditional textbook-based learning. I love the way Dr. Crespo explains complicated topics and uses funny analogies to help us remember and understand class themes. Dr. Crespo also engages with students and has suggested outside reading on topics we may personally be interested in. He treats all students with respect and reaches out to students who are struggling to help them keep up with the class.
Dr. Crespo always goes above and beyond for all of his students, and he should be recognized for such.
He has such passion for the subjects he guides his students through. You can feel that he is giving everything he has to help his students be successful. -
Gary Crim
General Dentistry and Oral Medicine
School of DentistryDr. Crim is one of the most patient and understanding professors I have ever had. Our dental school class is not picking up on laboratory skills as quickly as some other classes have in the past, but he is working with us and allowing us extra time to develop these hand-skills which we so much appreciate. For me personally, even though I have been putting in significant time before each exam, often times I still am not entirely satisfied with my final product, but it's apparent Dr. Crim understands these things take time and doesn't penalize students' grades for not achieving perfection. Each class he makes ME feel like a top priority, which in a class of 120 students probably isn't an easy task. I am very thankful to have him as a professor my first year in dental school and am honored to have him as a mentor as I begin this new exciting journey into the dental profession. -
Gale Crush
Engineering Fundamentals
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringProfessor Crush taught me that even in the most intimidating of courses such as Engineering Analysis 2, I can succeed. She was always very encouraging and never condescending to her students. Professor Crush is an inspiration to me to always believe in myself. She has given me the best experience in Speed School thus far. -
Jennifer Cruze
Criminal Justice
College of Arts and SciencesThe most amazing teacher I've ever had at the University of Louisville. She truly cares about her students and genuinely wants them to do well. I would have failed the courses I took, if she wasn't the professor. -
Joseph Dablow
Political Science
College of Arts and SciencesHe conveyed the ideals and points of the course well.
Professor Dablow is one of the most dedicated professors at the university. He totaled his car right before class one day and still managed to come and teach the full period with blood on his suit simply because he values his students' education and his job more than his comfort. I truly appreciate his dedication to his students and his unique way of making something interesting out of what some people might consider a dull topic. He challenged us each and every class to look outside of our biased and sometimes uneducated beliefs on the world around us. This is why I believe Professor Dablow deserves this honor. -
Joan D'Antoni

Donald Demuth
Oral Immunology and Infectious Diseases
School of DentistryDr. Donald Demuth is one of the best lecturers I have seen. I extremely admire the way he delivers the lectures and makes every concept easy to memorize. He is extremely knowledgeable, and it is an honor to be associated with him. As my mentor, understanding my lack of knowledge in this area, he makes me understand every little concept very efficiently. He is easily approachable, and I am proud to be working with him in his department. -
Michael Detmer
Academic and Professional Studies
School of MusicHe encourages us and really pulls the class together like a family. He takes advantage of our hour of class that we get once a week, and he prepares us for our future careers. He is so talented and educated, and he is able to be a professor and also work at a hospital. -
Julia Dietrich
English
College of Arts and SciencesI was in Dr. Dietrich's British Literature class this semester. She made the class very interesting, and I could tell she was passionate about the subject. What stood out to me most about her style of teaching is how she connected everything together and how much she stressed the importance of culture and how literature affects culture. She was an excellent teacher who I believe deserves recognition. -
Guy Dove
Philosophy
College of Arts and SciencesA wonderful and amazing instructor! He really took the time to make sure we were understanding the subject and was available outside of class for additional help as well. He facilitated good classroom discussion and was really engaging and fun. One of the best professors I have ever had. -
Timothy Dowling
Physics and Astronomy
College of Arts and SciencesDifferential equations is often stereotyped as one of the most complicated classes that an undergraduate can take, the stuff of horror, only to be braved by those unhinged enough to consider such masochism "fun." Professor Dowling takes this notion and promptly throws it out of the classroom. His lectures are phenomenally well-thought-out, giving understandable and accurate explanations of even difficult topics, and breaking down mathematics into simple processes. This does not mean he is "dumbing down" the material or avoiding the more difficult sections; he is simply brilliant at teaching. Even more so, he strives to keep his class relevant and grounded for all students, regularly examining modern computational techniques and incorporating real technological solutions. There is never a dull moment or a painful one. He should be recognized for his efforts in educating students well in a traditionally difficult subject. -
Betty Doyle
Early Childhood and Elementary Education
College of Education and Human DevelopmentBetty is just so caring and so compassionate about her work. She is the one that has made me want to be a teacher. She will go above and beyond to help you, and I've never had a teacher like this. If anyone deserves this award, it's her.
She went above and beyond to create a welcoming environment. I looked forward to going to her class because she changed up the activities and asked us thought-provoking questions to start conversations. She always wanted what was best for her students, whether we chose to continue in the program or not, and she gave us plenty of helpful tips for life!
She's hands down the perfect professor. The love and joy from what she teachers to her students is absolutely beautiful. If it weren't for her, I probably wouldn't have known that teaching is what is going to be best for me. -
Thomas Dumstorf
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Dumstorf has been my favorite professor in my undergraduate career. He is passionate not only about teaching, but also towards his students--it is clear that he enjoys what he does beyond the job. He also finds ways to make his courses as interesting and entertaining as possible too, which makes learning fun and engaging. Professor Dumstorf also understands that not all students are alike, ensuring that no one has fallen behind. He encourages participation by always taking turns discussing the material with each student, while making sure he is on your knowledge level. I have proudly recommended Professor Dumstorf to many students and will continue to do so, even after I have graduated because he was one of the few professors who made my learning experience outstanding. -
Imad Elhaj
Finance
College of BusinessDr. Elhaj is certainly one of best professors in the College of Business; he is a great asset to the finance program. While the subjects themselves may be difficult, he is always willing to help. Not only that, he tries to make you think differently. This prepares you for the real-world once you graduate. -
Leigh Ann Elles
Academic and Student Affairs
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringLeigh Ann is amazing at her job. But not only that, she brings joy to her students and truly cares about them. She supports our dreams and encourages us which makes all the difference. She may not be a class instructor but she has still taught many students about hard work, persistence, and friendship! -
Steven Ellis
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
School of MedicineDr. Ellis has such dedication for his students. He goes above and beyond to make sure we understand the material by holding review sessions regularly. His teaching methods make it very easy to understand the material.
Steve incorporates new educational pedagogies constantly, always keeping his classes as up-to-date and of value to his students as anyone in the University.
Dr. Ellis goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is always learning. He sets up review sessions, extra online tutorials, and question banks to ensure all of his students are keeping up with the material.
Dr. Ellis brings an incredibly complex and difficult topic alive. He takes the "far out there" principles of biochemistry and puts them into words that his students can understand. He is funny, dedicated to his work, and ALWAYS excited about the subject matter he teaches. Furthermore, he helps us relate to the topic and understand how it is important for our careers as future physicians. I really appreciate that, in every lesson he teaches, Dr. Ellis explores the "why" of topics, not just the nitty-gritty of molecular pathways. When I started this class, I was expecting to hate it --I've always been scared off by biochemistry and how aloof and cerebral it all seems. Dr. Ellis has changed this for me and my classmates. He deserves to be recognized for how hard he works and how great of an instructor he is! -
Andreas Elpidorou
Philosophy
College of Arts and SciencesHe has been a saint. This semester I have had so many things happen in my life, and he is always willing to adapt to my needs. If I didn't have the flexibility in that class, I would have had to take incompletes. I can't thank him enough!
First, allow me to share that I have four degrees from UofL and have two others from other colleges. I also completed all the coursework for a PhD at UofL before being disabled in a car accident that put me into disability retirement. I was a teacher, and my PhD program was in training. I have no philosophy classes in any of my degrees. I came back to take such a class. Finally, I would hope that my comments would be seen as coming from a teaching professional and not just from a 19-year-old student, who was completing a gen-ed requirement. My instructor was Dr. Andreas Elpidorou. He taught Intro to Philosophy. Without him teaching as he does, I would not have been successful in his class. First, I cannot take notes fast enough to stay with the flow of instruction. I was in UofL's special education program for my last class before giving up on my PhD years ago. I was given a note-taker by UofL's Disability Resource Center. This was important to share, because Dr. Elpidorou put up ALL of his class slides for every session on Blackboard! This was for everyone, but it allowed me to be successful in the class. I printed, and read over and over, hundreds of pages of notes and readings. Dr. Elpidorou, was constantly aware of everyone's personal dignity, and made sure that none of his comments were offensive. He also made sure that the class was a "safe environment" for the class discussions and group discussions we had. You can imagine that many of the topics were controversial in nature, and could lead to emotional comments. He always kept the conversations at a high level, and at no time did I detect anyone being uncomfortable in class with what was being said He started the semester with opening remarks about his syllabus, and provided everyone with a copy through Blackboard. He laid out the semester, how things would work, how he grades, etc. He followed his syllabus throughout the semester to the "T." He also handed out instruction sheets, along with grading rubrics, for homework assignments. There was a lot of writing in the class, and he followed his grading rubrics. Furthermore, he had three exams during the semester, and for each one he provided study sheets for each exam. He also graded the written assignments in a very timely fashion. Every assignment I turned in had specific comments about the content. I appreciated the comments and the encouragement he shared. I shared my physical and mental disabilities with Dr. Elpidorou at the beginning of the semester. He allowed me to take special examinations that provided me with a way to be successful. More importantly, these special examinations were learning opportunities for me, as well as, allowing me to show him what I had learned. Dr. Elpidorou is a quiet person until the moment he "turns on" in the classroom. He is a very intelligent person. He "lights up" the classroom with his personality. He started every class with "any questions about the last class?" He inquired after every major point to make sure there were no questions. He always ended class with "any questions?" Furthermore, his explanations always allowed each of us to understand the concept he was trying to get across. It might take more than one explanation, but he always got the class to the point of understanding. Moreover, he was a very positive, upbeat, and encouraging individual. This professor always made himself available before and after each class. He periodically reminded students of his office hours, and that they could make comments to him via email. I personally took advantage of his time before and after class, as well as, asking questions or making comments via email. He always answered in a very timely fashion to all my emails . . . even on the weekends! I hope that I have shown Dr. Elpidorou to be a thoroughly professional educator, who is both demanding of effort, but encouraging as well. I have taken this time to share these comments, because I truly believe he is someone special. He deserves this recognition for what he does every day, and for what he does for all students. -

James Fairfield
English
College of Arts and SciencesI'm a chemistry major and Professor Fairfield has made English my favorite class. While the class is challenging and pushes me to become a better writer, I always look forward to having class with him. His essay prompts are actually interesting and fun to write (coming from someone who hates essays with a passion) and they give us an opportunity to express ourselves about something we care about. He's really funny and honest, and you can tell how much he cares about his students. It's a small class and he's gotten to know us all as writers and people over the course of the semester, and I'll definitely miss English 105 the most by the time the semester ends. I've learned a ton, gotten to be so much better at essays, and had a fantastic time with a fantastic professor. -
Elizabeth Fairhead
History
College of Arts and SciencesShe is a great professor. Her lectures are filled with lots of information, but she makes wanting to come to class and learn so much fun, and she's always willing to help you when needed. She gives back feedback on homework assignments and essays that really benefit you and helps you relearn the things you may have missed at first. Everyone should take a class with her, she's really great!!
Puts students/learning first over assessment, ensures opportunities for all kinds of students to be successful, balances 100 level gen ed with information and skills to definitely carry into future (not just future classes). -
Jeff Falcone
Physiology
School of MedicineGreat teacher, engaging, and encouraging.
Dr. Falcone goes above and beyond for his students. He makes himself available to answer questions and really wants to talk to and get to know everyone. During class, he even said he thinks of us as his "other children." It is easy to see that Dr. Falcone truly loves his job as an educator and wants all of us to succeed.
He was very enthusiastic and energetic which encouraged me to pay full attention in class. He was clear and would rehearse the important material over and over again. He put a lot of effort in presenting the material in an easier and more efficient manner. -

College of Arts and SciencesDr. Farrier exemplifies excellence in many areas of teaching, but her overwhelming knowledge of the American political system and separation of powers dynamics stands out and enables her to provide a unique educational experience to all of her students. She is respectful of all of her students and their diverse opinions/perspectives and maintains a completely non-partisan and professional perspective for the entirety of her courses. I was lucky enough to take her for consecutive semesters (Fall 2015, Spring 2016), and I made immense strides in my development as a student and lifelong learner that would not have been possible without a Dr. Farrier course. She is the most challenging professor I have taken during my tenure at UofL, but her classes truly embody the adage, "Hard work pays off." She expects excellence from her students and serves as a model for what excellence looks like in the professional and academic world. I am beyond thankful for my time with Dr. Farrier, and I could not imagine my junior year or college experience as a whole without the opportunity to borrow from her vast array of knowledge.
Dr. Farrier is extremely bipartisan, fair, professional and compassionate within a discipline where it is challenging to do so, politics. She is the epitome of an educator.
Dr. Farrier is by far my favorite professor at this school. She inspires me to learn--which is, in my opinion, the greatest thing a professor can do for his or her students. Dr. Farrier has challenged me more than any professor at UofL. Her classes are tougher, sure, but I have learned more in the three classes I've taken with her than with most other professors combined.
Dr. Farrier is a well-known and highly regarded professor by all students in the Political Science Department. She was recommended to me by a former RA and my current Hall Director, as well as many students that I have had classes with. Being in her American Presidency class, I struggled with some of her exam style originally, but she made sure to confront me and ask if there was any way she could help and if I would meet with her. She took time out of her schedule to meet with me and make sure that I was okay and made an effort to assist me in figuring out the best way to tackle the exam material. I have never had a teacher willing to do that before. She even wanted to learn about my personal life in order to get a feel for who I was and what I was dealing with; I have DEFINITELY never had a teacher willing to go to those lengths before, and it was extremely helpful in the long run; talking it out helped me to organize the course content into my schedule and reason with my daily life. I have a great appreciation and respect for Dr. Farrier and would recommend her course to any student here at the University of Louisville. -
Ronald Fell
Biology
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Fell is one of the best professors I've ever had. He always explains things clearly and is always open to questions. I often see him talking one-on-one with students before and after class. I had him for BIOL 465 last semester and currently have him for BIOL 400. He challenges students and emphasizes critical thinking but also makes sure his exams are not insurmountable.
I am a post bac trying to get a wide enough swath of knowledge in biology to prepare for Medical School. It's professors like Dr. Fell who truly challenges students to be the best that they can be. He is immensely knowledgeable and always willing to help. I feel like I went from mediocre to excellent thanks to him, and I wish more professors could follow suit and try to make this generation of students not just passable but exceptional. -
John Ferré
Communication
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Ferré has enhanced my experience as a student and lifelong learner and serves as a role model for teaching, especially in the Communication discipline. Not only is he respectful of all of his students, he is more than willing to accommodate and meet with anyone he encounters. He genuinely takes an interest in the lives of others, and he is a kind and generous human being. His vast knowledge of media and religion made his course enjoyable and rich with information. I enrolled in the class as someone who was already interested in American religion, and I left the class blown away by Dr. Ferré's unique perspective and intuitive teaching abilities. I would take every Communication class with him if it were possible, and I encourage anyone and everyone to take a course with him.
John Ferré is a great professor who is full of enthusiasm for communication. Our class had a main focus on the first amendment and Ferré's enthusiasm for the subject spread like wildfire throughout the class. -
Carol Fields
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesAmazing teacher! Great with making sure every students gets to learn everything needed. Recommend all Spanish students to take her class.
I learned more Spanish in Spanish 121 class than I did in two years of high school Spanish! Thank you! -
Chris Fitzgerald
Performance Studies
School of MusicChris is definitely one of the best professors I've ever had; always is willing to look at something a different way if you don't understand a topic! -
Tyler Fleming
History/Pan-African Studies
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Fleming is the best professor I've ever had at the University of Louisville. He has deepened my passion for learning, history, and pan-African studies. I first took Dr. Fleming in Fall 2015, and it was because of him that I decided to pick up a minor in history. I took him again this past semester (Spring 2016) for Formation of Modern Africa, where he sparked my interest in PAS, which I am now also minoring in. Dr. Fleming pushes you to your limits; he wants to make sure you are really learning and grasping all of the information. He pushes you out of your comfort zone and challenges any previous perceptions you may have had before taking his class. He is really enthusiastic and makes it obvious that he is passionate about what he is teaching. Not only does he make it clear that he loves what he does, he also makes it clear that he genuinely cares about each of his students. He knows everyone's name by the second or third class, even when there are 50 students. He makes sure to know everyone on a somewhat personal level. I have never experienced this with any other professor at UofL. He really makes you feel like he cares about your learning and you as a person. He is by far the best professor, and I cannot wait to take him again next semester!
The personal attention toward students and effort Mr. Fleming shows is unrivaled. -
Bonnie Fonseca-Greber
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Fonseca-Greber truly encompasses the idea of creating an environment which allows for active student participation and learning. Her passion and dedication is made evident in every class, and she always ensures that all students' voices are heard and incorporated into the learning environment. She makes herself available both in and out of the classroom, and Dr. Fonseca-Greber is always trying to further the education of students by adding on a French or Linguistics minor. Throughout the semester, Dr. Fonseca-Greber's impact on students was made apparent in discussion in and out of class. Both myself and my fellow peers in her class would agree that Dr. Fonseca-Greber has made a significant impact on our learning at the University of Louisville. -
Robert Forbes
Geography and Geosciences
College of Arts and SciencesFantastic instructor who cares about the success of his students. -
J. Price Foster
Criminal Justice
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Price helped the entire class expand their minds and be open to other opinions. He is by far the best professor I have ever had at UofL. -
Michael Fowler
Political Science
College of Arts and SciencesAbsolutely loved this class and professor, and not simply because it is within my major. Professor Fowler, from the first day, was completely focused and engrossed with our topic of International Law. He set parameters at the beginning of the class to set up what we as students should be looking to understand from each lecture. Each and every class he would bring us back to those core questions which helped enormously with grasping such a broad field of study. I've never taken a class so organized and focused day in and day out. I can honestly say I've retained more knowledge from this course than any other course I've taken, and as retaining knowledge is the goal of attending a university, I would argue Professor Fowler is one of the best out there.
Dr. Fowler is an incredible professor! Not only is he extremely knowledgeable on the material that we learn in class, he is accessible and easy to talk to. His lecture style is fast paced but he is able to keep the class interesting and engaging. His comments on assignments are constructive, and it feels like he is here to help me succeed. -
Karen Freberg
Communication
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Freberg is an amazing instructor! Her Strategic Communication class was my first Comm. class at UofL, and I was so impressed I signed up for Social Media class in the Spring! She is so enthusiastic (Thanks to all of her coffee!) and nice, as well!
She is a great professor. Always willing to help students.
Dr. Freberg has an outstanding social media class, with ten guest expert social media speakers coming to this class. Community projects with students making a social media campaign for the Louisville Bats baseball team. She has been there for every student in this class. She is easily and quickly reachable via a Tweet or is always happy to help students who come to her office. She is an asset for our University with expert knowledge of public relations, crisis communication and social media. Dr. Freberg went above and beyond as a professor at UofL and deserves to be recognized by the University as an outstanding teacher and leader in communication.
She is an interesting and enjoyable teacher. -
Laura Frey
Kent School of Social WorkDr. Frey is new to UofL and has already been an incredibly helpful and supportive faculty member. -
Hermann Frieboes
Bioengineering
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringNot only is Dr. Frieboes extremely intelligent, he has an excellent teaching method and is very fair in his grading. He also cares deeply for both his students and the department. -
Hichem Frigui
Computer Engineering and Computer Science
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringIt was the first semester that Dr. Frigui had the Algorithms course, but really he organized well all the materials, assignments, reviewing sessions, etc. I really enjoyed the course, and it was my best course here as an MS student.

Christopher Frost
Biology
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Frost very clearly loves what he teaches and is willing to do everything in his power to see his students appreciate chemical ecology as he does! -
Roy Fuller
Comparative Humanities
College of Arts and SciencesGreat class. Can't wait to take a seminar with Dr. Fuller next semester.
Inspired me to respect and learn more about a subject I never gave much credit. I learned a lot and found that this instructor made the class not a chore, but something to look forward to. -
Miles Fuller
English
College of Arts and SciencesThrough snarky comments and backhanded compliments (to the class as a whole and not directed towards any individual student) he built up my confidence in my writing and how far it could go. Intentional or not, I left his class with a heightened sense of ability and confidence, riding a wave of self-motivation and the dream of publication closer then before. -
Linda Fuselier
Biology
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Fuselier is passionate about her work in and out of the classroom. As a major outside and totally opposite of Biology, I was intrigued, fascinated, and engaged during every class meeting. I don't accredit this fascination directly to myself, but rather to Dr. Fuselier who was always excited to dive into a topic and then into the next with equal excitement. The University of Louisville is lucky to have her on their team and would be well represented if Dr. Fuselier won this award.
Professor Fuselier was by far my favorite instructor this year! Although she had well over 200 students in the lecture hall, she made it fun and engaging. -
Jordan Gabbard
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Gabbard has been my favorite professor the last two semesters. He made learning German very fun and was very invested in his classes. He provided us with many opportunities to get involved in the German community and learn more than just the language. I learned more in two semesters in his class than I thought I could. He really set us up to succeed in the course and in the German community. -
Jason Gainous
Political Science
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Gainous has gone out of his way to ensure that I am getting the most out of my academic career at UofL. He has worked with me to get an internship and on an undergraduate paper idea. Even more than this, Professor Gainous has inspired me to follow what he has done in the field of political science, to want to conduct research and teach the same as he is.
Intelligent, constantly excited about his material.
Extremely knowledgeable. Friendly. Class discussion isn't just about shoving info down our throats but is spent helping up figure out the "why." This increases critical thinking, which is really what college should be about in the first place. His demeanor and attitude is refreshing and coalesces well with his students. Overall, Professor Gainous is a fantastic educator.
One of the most influential instructors I have ever had. Has a serious passion for the materials and knows how to reach students. -
Therese Gehrke
Health and Sport Sciences
College of Education and Human DevelopmentProfessor Gehrke is not only passionate about what she teaches, but she really cares about the well-being of her students! She has inspired me in more ways than one and was a deciding factor on what career path I wanted to take. She's an amazing lady!! -
Erin Gerber
Industrial Engineering
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringDr. Gerber is one of the most helpful professors I have ever had the pleasure of having. Though I am not in one of her courses this semester, she has still found the time to help me with a class that I have been having trouble with. She wants to see all students exceed in all their endeavors. It is refreshing to have the pleasure of knowing a professor who will help students to succeed and love to see it happen. It's nice to know that there are still professors out there who are willing to help students at all cost.
Dr. Gerber is always willing to lend a hand and is really flexible with office hours. She bends over backwards to help students understand course material. On projects, she always takes time to leave detailed feedback. She understands what it's like to be a student juggling a difficult course load and is willing to work with you to help in any way she can. I've enjoyed all of my many classes with her that I've taken during my time at UofL. -
Austin Gibbs
Chemistry
College of Arts and SciencesHe was a great chemistry lab TA! He was willing to answer any questions and made the class enjoyable! -
John Gibson
Philosophy
College of Arts and SciencesGreat professor, enjoyed his class, and got me interested in philosophy.
Best teacher I've had in college. Explains the material extremely well and doesn't overwhelm students. Allows the students to take control of the course but always has the ability to bring it back and relate to topics. Isn't a "read the chapter and we'll discuss" type of instructor, takes time to make connections. Very open discussions and no one feels like they can't state their opinion. Also, very funny, hands down best at UofL.
John Gibson is a wonderful professor who really engages his students and genuinely cares about their academic success! I actually enjoy listening to his lectures.
LOVED HIS CLASS.
John Gibson is one of the best things about this university right along with Mr. Jim and the Davidson Lady. He genuinely cares about all of his courses, along with the students who take them. He is engaging and finds ways for each and every student to relate to the course material in a way no other professor can. He always stops to say hello and ask how I'm doing, whether he sees me on campus or at Kroger. You can tell after talking to him for five minutes that he is extremely passionate about his job and goes the extra mile to offer help to his students. Every college campus should be filled with professors such as John Gibson.
Very open lecture and great knowledge of topics. Kept me interested. -
Matthew Goldberg
History
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Goldberg has been one of my favorite professors during my four years at UofL. He is truly passionate about history and teaching!
I've never liked American history, but he made it interesting. His lectures are engaging, and you can tell he is passionate about the subject. -
Tasha Golden
English
College of Arts and SciencesShe helped me a lot with understanding English better than any teacher I have ever had.
Tasha was an excellent professor. Definitely my favorite instructor this semester.
AMAZING. -
Seana Golder
Kent School of Social WorkIt is my pleasure to nominate Dr. Seana Golder for a faculty favorite. As a first-year student in the master's program, I was extremely nervous about being prepared for the coursework, but Dr. Golder quickly took my concerns away. She makes her classroom a safe space for students to discuss issues and encourages students to disagree with her and their peers so that all sides of an argument are heard but to keep the conversation respectful. She is willing to meet with students to discuss any concerns or course content or their long-term goals in general. She keeps her lectures engaging and teaches from the perspective that students learn best from their peers. She also ensures that every student has a voice and has an opportunity to participate in class discussion. It is for these reasons that I nominate Dr. Seana Golder for a faculty favorite.
Dr. Golder is an inspiration to me. Firstly, she shows genuine concern for not only myself but all of the students in the classroom. Dr. Golder can take some of the material that is a little "dry" and breathe life into it, making is relevant and pertinent to present-day situations. Dr. Golder is also very approachable and is consistently inquiring her students if they need any additional assistance and ensuring that "no one is left behind" in regards to the learning for the week or if anyone has questions regarding the assignments for the upcoming week or the entire semester. Dr. Golder makes herself available for her students during her personal time also. Dr. Golder is a very inspirational teacher. She is calm, even-tempered and possesses a wonderful sense of humor and a teaching personality that resonates in positive and encouraging attitudes. Dr. Golder is a gifted and talented teacher, and I am a better student for having had her as my teacher this semester. Dr. Golder has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that each and every student in her class was fully engaged in all of the learning that was presented. Dr. Golder is passionate and completely knowledgeable about all of the information presented in classroom. She takes the time to make sure that everyone is on the same page in class and affords every student the opportunity to participate in classroom and outside of classroom. She is dedicated and well prepared for multiple interactions during classroom activities. Dr. Golder is one of those rare teachers who embodies professionalism, acute and accurate knowledge of her field and the dedication to make sure that all of her students are well prepared for careers in social work. I am a much better student due to my association with Dr. Golder. She emulates the type of teacher and professional that I aspire to be. -
Craig Grapperhaus
Chemistry
College of Arts and SciencesMy favorite professor so far at the university!
Professor Grapperhaus led great lectures in Chem 202. He took a class that is typically difficult to comprehend and made it easy to understand. Also, he was always more than happy to help out with students, even going so far as to hold evening review sessions before exams. -
Leslie Greenwell
Criminal Justice
College of Arts and SciencesThe one thing I respected most about Professor Greenwell was that she was very straightforward with what she expected of students, and in my opinion, did a great job on teaching about private security in many different aspects. She was creative in her teaching, in a good way, by having lectures, guest speakers, videos, and group assignments. All in all, she made this class very informative and was always professional! -
Mary Gregg
REACH--GEN 104
Undergraduate AffairsVery passionate about what she teaches. Always went the extra mile to help students understand the material. -
Karen Griffin
Performance Studies
School of MusicMs. Griffin is my favorite teacher from this semester and from my entire undergraduate career as a whole. She made me not only feel like I was learning a lot, but also that I was enjoying the process. Talking to other students outside of the class, they all agreed that she was the nicest person and the most understanding. She made us all feel like we were appreciated and individually capable. She's wonderful. -
Melissa Groenewold
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesProfesora Groenewold is always friendly, upbeat, and interesting. She keeps the class engaged and makes a lot of jokes, and we all love her. Even though she teaches multiple SPAN-121 classes, she still remembers each student by name. Thanks to her teaching, I am now pursuing a minor in Spanish. -
Elizabeth Grossi
Criminal Justice
College of Arts and SciencesGrossi is the reason I am potentially changing my major. She showed such passion in not only the subject of criminal justice, but in the prospect of sharing her knowledge with others. She gave students amazing opportunities to learn more about criminal justice through field trips and guest speakers. -
Frank Groves
Epidemiology and Population Health
School of Public Health and Information SciencesHe gives legitimate disease outbreak investigation from real-life scenarios and disease surveillance methods. Gives appropriate time for assignments. The class is exciting and interesting with him, as he has great knowledge about the important information in identifying outbreaks, plus he has nice humour spirit, which I think is important to make the class more exciting. -
James Grubola
Fine Arts
College of Arts and SciencesHe did a great job giving the reason for why things are done, rather than just simply demonstrating. His style of teaching was an integral part of my development as an artist.
The instructor tailors the advice given to each art student with great care. -
Nisha Gupta
Peace, Conflict, and Social Justice
College of Arts and SciencesHer ambition to help students does not end at her course. She goes above and beyond to provide students with future job placements and career opportunities. -
Jafar Hadizadeh
Geography/Geosciences
College of Arts and SciencesThere isn't a better professor in geography/geosciences. He makes his students experts with the material he presents. I've learned more this semester than I have in years. Amazing! He's the best, no doubt!
I've taken a lot of college classes in my time, and I've never learned as much as I have with Dr. Hadizadeh. He is incredible! -
Karen Hadley
English
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Hadley is the most amazing professor ever. She made literature theory easy to understand. She doesn't make students feel stupid for not knowing anything. She also happens to be one of the funniest people I've ever met. I would recommend taking one of her classes no matter what major you're in.
Teaches critical thinking in an intense and thoughtful way that asks a lot of her students, while guiding them to challenge the ways they think and argue powerfully in writing. -
Michael Hagan
Comparative Humanities
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Hagan went above and beyond his duty as my professor, in as much as he not only helped me be successful in his class, but he aided me with my other courses as well. Dr. Hagan is an invaluable educational resource for the University of Louisville in my opinion. -
John Hale
Anthropology/Liberal Studies
College of Arts and SciencesA
Dr. Hale is very knowledgeable in his field and very philosophical about the wide-reaching aspects of his work into everyday life. He is very inspiring, and not only teaches the material, but teaches you how to be a good person, how to believe in your ideals and stand by them, and how to speak in front of people in a professional way. He is among the top professors I have ever known, and I wish I had known about his classes before my senior year. I would've taken a lot more of his classes. -
Marion Hambrick
Health and Sport Sciences
College of Education and Human DevelopmentAwesome
Dr. Hambrick truly cares for his students, connecting with them on a personal basis, understanding that everyone learns differently and teaching to accommodate each student's needs, and is always available to lend a helping hand.
Dr. Hambrick is a wonderful professor who really cares for his students and their input. We had great class discussions, and I truly felt like it was a judgment-free zone. Rather than focus on surface-level observations, Dr. Hambrick encouraged us to dig deeper and discuss controversial topics. Honors 331- Sports In Film has been one of my favorite classes at the University of Louisville.
Dr. Hambrick is always prepared and brings so many insights that enlighten students!! -
Meg Hancock
Health and Sport Sciences
College of Education and Human DevelopmentDr. Hancock is an the epitome of an educator. She educates, emulates, and empowers. She is a mentor. She is not afraid to take risks and push herself and her students.
Dr. Hancock is one of the most influential teachers I have ever had in my 18 years of school. She is a tremendous asset to anybody who has a chance to have a conversation with her. She has so much knowledge and is incredibly uplifting. Every time I have a conversation with her, I always leave thinking how incredibly fortunate I am to have her as my advisor. I have never left a conversation doubting myself, and she always instills an incredible piece of her with you. Dr. Hancock is simply just incredible. I advise a lot of people to take a class with her, and if they can't...just have a conversation with her. She is so understanding and will give you the truth all the while being positive. As a teacher, I have had only one class with her, and I think I've learned more in that class than I have in the entire SPAD master's program. Her subject, ideas, and way of teaching goes so much further than reading out of a book and answering questions. Dr. Hancock is a person I will remember for the rest of my life. If she makes that much of an influence on a person, she should definitely be recognized. If she doesn't win the award, I sure hope it's not based on how many people vote for that person, but because of the comments. Dr. Hancock is well deserving of this award and there is absolutely no doubt about it. -
Meghan Hancock
English
College of Arts and SciencesI am not an English major and have always hated English, but Meghan Hancock makes me actually like going to English class.
Best professor this semester--hands down. -
Barbara Hanger
Fine Arts
College of Arts and SciencesI took classes with Barbara for three semesters straight. She always made sure that we had the tools we needed to succeed as well as engaging prompts. I felt like I got to grow my art in a way that I hadn't in the past because she encouraged us to not only make technical choices but conceptual ones as well. She always provided helpful comments without judgment of your concept, encouraging you to work through it and put thought into what you were saying with your artwork. She is a dedicated teacher, and I always felt I could come to her with questions and concerns. She never just cared about you as a student, she cared about you as a fellow artist, and I know I will continue to keep contact with her in the future for helpful insights and friendly support and critique.
Barbara is a fantastic teacher. I took her bookmaking class this semester, and she could have handed out instructions for binding and folding and gluing and let us fend for ourselves--but she made it clear that her job was to help us. All semester, she was actively involved in our projects, checking on us, asking if we needed help, sitting down and walking us (all of us, individually!) through our difficulties. She stayed late after class numerous times to help anyone who needed it, telling us, "Don't worry, this is what I'm paid to do. Let me know if you need more help." She was willing to overlook an almost-finished project, if we were taking the time for really excellent craft; she highlighted our strengths personally and publicly; she encouraged us to work hard and to work well. Barbara taught concepts and ideas clearly, but more importantly, she showed us how to be a lovely person. Her example this semester was more than just how to make books: she showed us how to treasure and bless the people around us too.
Barbara is the absolute best! She is capable of succinctly covering complex approaches, while being completely approachable and relaxed, lending to an enjoyable learning atmosphere.
Barbara is the nicest, most helpful art instructor that I've had the pleasure to learn from! She is knowledgeable, and she makes learning and creating art fun and exciting. -
Patrick Hardesty
Counseling and Human Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentDr. Hardesty was an outstanding professor who took time to talk with us about our skills and development as counselors. His unique work experience was refreshing, and he offered a perspective of our field that I hadn't considered before. He was very personable and approachable. I had many wonderful professors during my time in my program; but Dr. Hardesty stands out as my favorite. -

Cheryl Hart
Health and Sport Sciences
College of Education and Human DevelopmentI am nominating Cheryl Hart because she was always willing to go the extra mile for her students. I was in her online class, and even taking a class online with her, she engaged with the students and made it as personable as possible. I think all online instructors could learn a thing or two from Ms. Hart! -
Megan Hartline
English
College of Arts and SciencesMegan cares as much for her students as she does for the material she teaches. She goes above and beyond for her students, and UofL will truly be missing out when she leaves after the semester! She is fantastic, and anyone who has her on their staff in the future will be beyond lucky! -
Kenneth Hartung
Marketing
College of BusinessMr. Hartung has by far been the best professor I have had during my three and a half years at the University of Louisville. It is obvious that he is passionate about seeing his students succeed. This is the only class I have ever attended where I do not feel the need to have a laptop out or check my phone at least once during the hour. He truly keeps us engaged through classroom discussion, team and individual cases, and real-world, problem-solving situations. Instead of simply relying on lecture to teach us information, he helps guide our thought processes to make our own conclusions and find the answers through the sales and leadership methods we are learning. I have also especially enjoyed Mr. Hartung as a professor because he admits that there are not always "right" answers in sales and leadership, but that some methods are more effective and efficient than others. During our course, he brought in a variety of speakers from local area businesses and gave us the opportunity to network with these professionals and learn more about what they look for in applicants and what the real world of business is like today. He also listens to his students and adjusts to our needs. He is flexible, and as a result of class suggestions, is hosting a final exam review session outside of scheduled class time to ensure we do well. A few members of the class were unable to attend the scheduled time for this review due to work conflicts, so he scheduled an additional time to meet the needs of those students as well. I truly feel that I have learned more in Mr. Hartung's class than simply information, and I can see how I have developed individually as a student, employee, and person as a result. -
Kent Hatteberg
Performance Studies
School of MusicDr. Hatteberg has a passion for music and a passion for sharing his love of music with not only students, but everyone he encounters. He pushes his students every day to work their hardest, and he doesn't take "no" for an answer. Dr. Hatteberg provides numerous opportunities every year for his students to become involved within the music community, whether it be locally or abroad. -
Barry Haworth
Economics
College of BusinessExcellent instructor. His lectures are entertaining and chock-full of information. He explains things in ways that make it easy to learn and uses examples to explain concepts. I feel like I have a great understanding of micro and macroeconomics because I had Dr. Haworth as a teacher. He goes above and beyond as a professor, offering extra office hours to fit everyone's schedule and is always willing to go over material with students outside of class.
He is such a great professor. I have never been so excited to go to class, although his tests are hard. He is definitely worth taking and keeps the class so entertained.
Professor Haworth is great! He's thorough, helpful, and keeps the classroom atmosphere fun but also academically challenging!
He has been my favorite teacher at UofL. His class is so great! I am learning a lot, and he always keeps us engaged in learning. Also he always is there to help. Goes out of his way to offer office hours at night and will sit down and help you go over material until you understand it. -
Theresa Hayden
Criminal Justice
College of Arts and SciencesTakes pride in helping you succeed.
Dr. Hayden has helped me start to heal from being trafficked for sex when I was younger. I would like that to remain anonymous, if you use this for anything. I finally felt comfortable enough to tell someone that I had been trafficked and that I hadn't even started to heal from it. She has let my creative ideas flow by allowing the class to make videos about human trafficking, which mine was specifically on how we can reduce human trafficking in the United States. I am finally beginning to understand my past, and it is all because Dr. Hayden is so passionate about ending human trafficking that she teaches a class on it. -
Dedra Hayden
School of NursingDedra creates a great atmosphere for learning. She pushes us all to be the best we can be. She is entertaining, always smiling, and positive. -
Ray Haynes
Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentFirst of all, thank you for the opportunity to acknowledge my professors. Each one of my professors did a fantastic job at presenting to me newfound knowledge, as well as, enhancing my KSA's. Choosing a professor was not easy because of this. -
Maura Hencker
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesMaura went above and beyond to make sure, not only me, but my entire class knew exactly what we needed for the class. She really wanted us to learn ASL and was so patient with us. She is such an amazing instructor. She is also very funny. I not only learned so much in her class but made friends that will last a lifetime. She really makes the class personal, and I will always think of her as one of the best professors during my time at UofL.
Maura is an AWESOME teacher! She is strict but very patient. Not a pushover but very kind. It is the perfect combination. She will work with you to help you understand ASL and deaf culture. I give her two thumbs up! -

College of Arts and SciencesMs. Kim Hendricks is a great asset to the Criminal Justice Department and to the University of Louisville as whole. She was always very helpful and had a big contribution to my success at Louisville. -
Ann Herd
Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentI am an international student, and this last semester was a big challenge for me because it was my first semester, and I had to adapt to a new life, language, and also dedicate to studies. This teacher was very important for me. She in a way helped me get through all this. She dedicated extra time to evaluate my work and give me feedback, she gave good ideas for my papers, and she was kind and willing to help me. This teacher made me feel I was on the right track, and this stimulated me to keep pursuing my studies. I am really glad I was able to meet her. -
George Higgins
Criminal Justice
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Higgins was a great professor who made the class seem as if a student was teaching it. -
Amy Hirschy
Counseling and Human Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentI would like to nominate Dr. Amy Hirschy for the Faculty Favorite Award at the University of Louisville. Dr. Hirschy is currently the only full-time faculty member for the College Student Personnel Master's of Education Program. In this role, Dr. Hirschy teaches classes each semester, advises all Master's and Ph.D. students in the program, conducts her own research, is extremely involved in the Louisville community and much, much more. Essentially, she is superwoman. Since I chose to pursue a career in higher education, Dr. Hirschy has been there to support me every step of the way. She has taught me the fundamental theories that support our work, encouraged me through countless assignments and projects, challenged me to think intentionally and critically, and assisted me with preparing for job interviews and the job search process. Every student in the College Student Personnel Program admires Dr. Hirschy for the heart and soul she gives to her students, the program and the university. I can think of no one more deserving of this award than her. -
William Hnat
Mechanical Engineering
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringI was in Dr. Hnat's ME 414 Mechanical Measurements course during the Spring semester of 2015 (and related lab course, ME 415). Dr. Hnat has extensive knowledge in the field of measurements, and I can honestly say that I learned a great deal from him while taking this course and found it very easy to do so. -
Lisa Hooper
Counseling and Human Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentDr. Hooper was my dissertation chair. She was supportive, available, and very knowledgeable. She gave me excellent direction and working with her was wonderful.
Dr. Hooper is beyond deserving of this award. She is the most dedicated and caring professor I have had at UofL. She goes above and beyond for every student, faculty and staff member at the university. Dr. Hooper is so knowledgeable about course content and is consistently well prepared for every class and actively engages all students each class period. Dr. Hooper is not only dedicated to students within the classroom, she is truly concerned with students' well-being outside of the classroom as well. I have never experienced a professor who wanted their students to succeed so well and makes every effort to aide in that process. Dr. Hooper is my favorite professor because she literally pours her heart and soul into the CMHC program and its students. She goes above and beyond to meet the needs of students and support us in any way. She is more than deserving of recognition and winning this award! Overall, Dr. Hooper is a phenomenal professor who will continue to make our program the best it can be. -
Ashley Hopkins
TRIO Student Support Services
Student AffairsAshley has been an incredible mentor to me the last two semesters. I have had one crisis after another crisis this semester, and she has been there to respond to my e-mails about the drama that is occurring, willing to let me rant to her on her lunch break, and encouraged me to do better in class. She even let me become a TRIO SSS mentor and tutor, giving me a job that would work well with my schedule (because I have four jobs and go to school full-time, she wanted to give me a chance to make money where I could schedule tutoring sessions in my breaks between classes). Ashley has also managed to keep me grounded. I feel like a mad person sometimes rushing around from one job to another to class. Ashley has seen me fly in and out of the TRIO SSS Office and has sent me e-mails or texts or called me to remind me about something I was supposed to do. She is sweet, and I don't know what I would do without her. -
Angela Horn
Counseling and Human Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentAngela was beyond amazing in our Techniques of Counseling class. She modeled so many of the behaviors we're trying to learn and really collaborated with us. The course structure really supported the course goals in unique and effective ways. All in all, I am very impressed with the work Angela did and how much I learned in her class. Being a counselor in training can be a very intimidating and overwhelming place to be. Her class has given me so much more confidence! -
David Howarth
Geography/Geosciences
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Howarth is a kind and entertaining teacher. He always keeps class interesting with his humor and his apparent passion for meteorology. He clearly knows what he's talking about. He is also very approachable and willing to help his students. He is my favorite professor this semester, and I am planning to take his climatology class next semester, just to be in his class again. -
Lenore Hoyt
Chemistry
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Hoyt is a very effective professor. There was never a question she did not answer with precision and distinction. She treats the students with respect and is very flexible with the office hours. She is a very just person overall. To me that's what makes a great teacher. She should be nominated as one of the Top 4.
I have had Dr. Hoyt for both semesters this year. She always goes out of her way to be a resource for her students and to help them in any way that she can. Her love for teaching (and chemistry) is shown through her every lecture. She asks for feedback often, in an attempt to adjust her teaching for her students to make them as successful and comfortable as possible. I did not do well in her class the first semester, but even though I struggled and did not quite understand the chemistry, I still enjoyed going to the almost two-hour lectures, and in fact, did not miss a single one. Her passion is contagious, and she makes me want to do the absolute best that I can. She is truly an inspiration. Not a single time has she come to class without a smile on her face--rain or shine. I truly appreciate Dr. Hoyt, and she is a professor I will never forget.
Dr. Hoyt is the best professor I've had since I started at UofL. After every lecture, I have learned and understood some chemistry. She takes a lot of time to print out worksheets and record her lectures to provide them as resources for her students. It is obvious that she spends a lot of time trying to help her students understand what she's teaching. She doesn't just stand in front of us and talk without asking for our input. She asks us questions and gets her students involved in class and ensures that we understand each topic before moving forward. Her exams are challenging, but she makes them possible by providing us with every resource she can. She makes me feel like I can succeed, and there's no reason for me to fail if I put forth the effort. I'm very thankful to have had her as a professor and would recommend her to any student.
Dr. Hoyt is such an incredible teacher. As soon as she walks into the classroom, her good mood and sense of humor are evident -- even for the evening section of Chem 105! She explains concepts so clearly, encourages discussion, and inspires plenty of laughs! In addition, she sets aside large amounts of time for office hours, so that any student with questions or struggles can find time to talk to her for help. Overall, I think she really cares about teaching and making sure that her students succeed. -
Shiping Hua

College of Arts and SciencesHe is thoroughly engaging in class discussions and is quite entertaining to listen to. He fosters great debate in class and is knowledgeable about his subject area. -
Benjamin Hufbauer
Fine Arts
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Hufbauer displays passion and intellect through his teachings. His curriculum is very organized and informative, as well as modern. His encouragement of participation allowed for more well-rounded learning. AND he has a great sense of humor!
Professor Hufbauer made a subject that I thought I would fail at not only intriguing, but by the end of the semester, I had become fascinated with art history. He taught our class life lessons that we will carry with us in and out of school--like seeing beauty in everything and feeding our minds good food. I am glad I got to be a part of Professor Hufbauer's class and learn to love something I had never studied before. -
Mary Hums
Health and Sport Sciences
College of Education and Human DevelopmentOne of the best instructors I have ever had. Truly inspirational and full of knowledge and experience. I hope to one day become just a fraction of how awesome she is. -
Lateefah Id-Deen
Middle and Secondary Education
College of Education and Human DevelopmentDr. Id-Deen is one of the best professors I've had in my three years at UofL. Dr. Id-Deen is extremely passionate about teaching, and it shows every day we are in class. Dr. Id-Deen takes a three-hour class and keeps her students engaged for all three hours. In her class every week, I found myself learning but always having fun, engaging in conversation with my peers, and laughing/enjoying myself! I cannot say this about all of my classes (past and present), and I know that I enjoy the class so much because Dr. Id-Deen cares about us and wants us to enjoy what we are doing. Dr. Id-Deen is also one of the most respectful professors that I've ever had. She understands that we are all adults, and she treats us with the respect of an adult, while also keeping in mind that we are busy and may need to extend a due date or give us extra help on best completing our assignments. Above all, Dr. Id-Deen makes me feel comfortable in her classroom and makes me passionate about teaching mathematics to my future students.
Hands-on interactive activities that keep me engaged during our three-hour class!
She is the most wonderful and intelligent educator of all.
She has been the best professor to work with, and she has reaffirmed why I want to be a teacher. Each class we leave with multiple tools to share in our future classroom. She has made the biggest difference in my collegiate experience so far at the University. I even rearranged my schedule to take another course she offers next semester.
Dr. Id-Deen is passionate, relatable, and an incredible instructor for her first year. I highly recommend her for this reward. -
Jay Irby

He has many personal experiences that he shares with us that are relevant to the content and offers us real-world perspectives. School of Public Health and Information SciencesDr. Jacobs has challenging but understanding qualities as a professor. -
Mike Jett
Health and Sport Sciences
College of Education and Human DevelopmentProfessor Jett is one of the most influential instructors I have had the privilege of being taught by at the University of Louisville. He has been the instructor for the final four core content classes needed for completion of my program and has shaped my direction in life in ways he will surely never understand. Professor Jett treats every student with a respectful and friendly manner, and I'm confident that he would be willing to drop whatever he is doing at any time to aid students in their academic success. I have never had an instructor who has been so efficient at communication, as any email I have ever sent has been responded to within a matter of hours. He designs classes that are mentally stimulating, interactive, and always entertaining. I'm thankful for Professor Jett and his immense passion for teaching and the field of Health and Human Performance. His passions are inevitably transferred onto every student he interacts with. Professor Jett deserves the Faculty Favorite award because he fulfills the reason we are all here--to be inspired. -
Michael Johmann
Comparative Humanities
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Johmann is one of the most interesting lecturers that I have ever heard. He is a natural teacher, and I always enjoyed learning from him. -
Arthur Johnson
Philosophy
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Johnson encourages learning not just inside the classroom but also out. He goes above and beyond, as he offers us advice about life and opportunities to become more engaged on campus. -
David Johnson
Health Management and Systems Sciences
School of Public Health and Information SciencesI first met Dr. Johnson this past summer in a section of contemporary issues in public health. I was initially impressed with his knowledge and passion regarding so many aspects of public health and of social justice. David is engaging, personable and ensures that his classes are informative without stagnating. Many of the topics we discuss can be "downers" but somehow we manage to come out of class with a hopeful outlook about what needs to be done and a sense of confidence that we are being trained to make those changes. When my global health class was struggling and our instructor left, whether by his own choice or not, David stepped up and has made the rest of the semester enjoyable and informative. I appreciate his extra efforts to salvage our semester and his dedication to ensuring our class takes away from global health the lessons that are necessary to go forward and succeed in our public health program and future career.
Dr. Johnson is one of those few professors who openly embraces the challenge of developing critical thinking skills in college students. Because of his efforts in encouraging problem solving, understanding different viewpoints, and facilitating thought-provoking class discussion; I truly feel that I am prepared to face the challenges of a public health profession. I am now more aware of the complexities of community public health interventions. His dedication to his profession is evident in the many times he asked for our feedback on assignments and activities in an effort to improve them for our benefit. Also, despite teaching two large classes, Dr. Johnson was always prompt with grading and available to help with any questions I had. Overall, I would say that Dr. Johnson is one of the most committed professors I have had at the University of Louisville, and he is a model representative of the public health undergraduate program philosophy.
David's awesome and goes above and beyond for students!
He is a wonderful instructor, always offering help to the students, even when the assignments are not from his class. He also took over the Global Health course in the middle of the semester, and he did a terrific job finishing this course. -
Timothy S. Johnson
English
College of Arts and SciencesHe is incredibly exceptional. He is easy to reach, responds fast, understanding of personal problems, and spends one-on-one time with students to help steer their essays and papers in the right direction. He is a 10/10 any day of the week.
Professor Johnson is a hardworking and intelligent individual. With my English 105 class, he managed to make the course content both enjoyable and educational. He works diligently to ensure that all students understand the material presented in lecture, as well as what and when assignments are due. I'm sure he is a valuable asset to the English Department as a whole. -
Tina Johnson
Kent School of Social WorkThis instructor went above and beyond to be the best instructor I have ever had during my college experience. I would love to take this class again if I could.
A rare gem! A professor who is so passionate and caring about her students and job. -
Sheila Johnston
Accountancy
College of BusinessProfessor Johnston is a wonderful teacher. I have not once struggled in her class because she provides more than sufficient material for you to learn and be successful. She is available and easy to reach. I feel as to this point in my college career she has helped me the most. -
Shannon Kapp
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesMs. Kapp was a pleasure to have as a professor. I have taken three courses with her--all which differ but center around American Sign Language and Deaf Studies--and learned a lot with each course, in no small part due to her enthusiasm and approachability. She makes her classroom a safe space for learning and conversation and does her best to ensure her students' successes. She is an asset to the American Sign Language Program and to UofL. -
Julia Karcher
Accountancy
College of BusinessProfessor Karcher is by far the best teacher I have ever had. She genuinely cares about how well her students perform. I know students may think of her as "tough," but it is only because she wants you to succeed. She has helped me grow in my other classes by giving me confidence to ask questions when I'm confused about something. She gives students many opportunities for additional help. She even tries to give us a heads up when it comes to internships. She is one of the few faculty members here who enjoys what she does and helps all her students. I have enjoyed having her and would recommend her to anyone. She has taught me a lot, and I feel she would be great for this award.
I am taking Accounting 302 this semester with Dr. Karcher, and she has been an amazing professor. Her history of both corporate and academic accounting has provided an excellent base from which to teach us about the theory and practice of accounting. I understand why we do things and also how it will impact me in my day-to-day job as an accountant. She also is a skilled teacher who is respectful of every student, clear in her communication and fair, while giving each student the chance to succeed. Even though this is a difficult course, I have enjoyed it and am sad that Dr. Karcher does not teach more accounting courses!
Professor Karcher cares passionately about her students' learning. She comes to class prepared and engages everyone in the discussion. Her mastery of the accounting principles is truly admiring. She agreed to write two letters of recommendations for my scholarship applications for the KyCPA and AICPA. I highly respect her as a professor.
Dr. Karcher should be recognized as an incredible person and professor for the University of Louisville. She stays current in her field and ties the profession to the classroom every week and provides the students multiple ways to think about an issue or concept. I love it that she isn't afraid to be challenged by students who have questions and is very respectful to all students. It is evident that she is a veteran in regards to her profession, and she knows how to get students from concept to application. She is incredibly gifted and should help other professors develop their pedagogical methods so that they can improve and become better professors. Dr. Karcher is without a doubt one of the best faculty members that UofL has, and it would be amiss for her not be recognized this year. -
Theresa Keeley
History
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Keeley is a talented professor who cares about her students' success and growth. I had Dr. Keeley as a professor in my HIST 510 class (Refugee Law and U.S. Foreign Policy), in which she was instrumental in helping us learn the intricacy of refugee law and foreign policy. Our class was discussion based, which encouraged heavy student participation. I feel as if I learned much about the course content and even improved my writing skills because of her teaching and guidance. -
Stephen Kendra
Computer Information Systems
College of BusinessThe best teacher that I've had, and he works hard and makes sure we understand the material. He is very passionate and can make anyone interested in what he is teaching very easily. Kendra is an all-around good guy, and I am trying to take his classes for the rest of my time at UofL! -
Petra Kern
Academic and Professional Studies
School of MusicDr. Kern, as an adjunct professor, has significantly impacted my journey as a student and as a future music therapist. She regularly encourages students to think critically and creatively and to work in cooperation with peers. Not only is she a force in the professional field as a researcher, business owner, and clinician, she is also known globally as she is a past president of the World Federation of Music Therapy. Dr. Kern strives to ensure that every student learns course content thoroughly, traveling to Louisville at least once during the semester to hold weekend intensives in person. She also makes great use of technology, with innovating use of apps and programs to assist learning and help students meet competencies. She is truly a facilitator of learning on a higher level. -
Alex Kerns
Health Management and Systems Sciences
School of Public Health and Information SciencesThis is his first time as the lead professor in the Pubic Health Management Graduate Program. It's very clear that Dr. Kerns loves to teach the world of healthcare finance to students. No matter what time of day, he is available to answer questions, teach you concepts you don't understand, or even talk to you about your concerns with the subject. He does not mind staying after class or after a meeting to make sure every concept is understood, not only for the exam, but in the real world. He gives real-life examples and will not stop explaining until he knows we thoroughly understand. He is also a wonderful mentor for MPH students who are graduating. He will help you learn where and when to look for jobs that interest you and will encourage you to step out of your comfort zone to apply for jobs you never knew you were qualified for. The class he taught was very small, but I know he made an impact on all of the students in there.
Dr. Kerns is by far one of the best professors I have had throughout my master's career at UofL. He teaches in a way that is understandable, and he made the content of the class relevant in a way that made sense for the class as a whole. He always went over and above what was expected of a professor. On many occasions, he stayed after class to ensure that the material was understood. His class has by far been the most useful for what I plan to do for the rest of my life. Dr. Kerns truly has made a difference for me throughout this semester, and I am grateful for everything he has taught me. Before this class started, I was dreading it because of the topic, but the way it was taught made it easier and not as stressful. He was very attentive to the concerns of all of the students and wanted to help. All professors say that they are always available if anyone needs help in the class, but many do not display the availability in a way that is comfortable for students. Dr. Kerns made it very clear he was available and that he really wanted everyone to learn the topics he was teaching because he knew how important they are for jobs in the healthcare market. I am truly grateful for everything he has done for me this semester, and I hope he will be considered for this recognition because he deserves it more than any other teacher I have had throughout my career at the University of Louisville. -
Sharon Kerrick

Kristi King
Health and Sport Sciences
College of Education and Human DevelopmentDr. King has done a lot for me as a Community Health graduate student to prepare me to work in health education in our community. She cares about her students, and she works hard to make our community healthier for kids. -
Audrey Kline
Economics
College of BusinessI think Dr. Audrey Kline deserves recognition for her passion, knowledge, and positive attitude regarding, not only economics, but other life skills as well. She always made herself available at all times and always gave us feedback that would benefit us in the class. Dr. Audrey Kline is extremely dedicated to teaching, and her number one goal is to make sure all of her students succeed. I think it is evident how much Dr. Kline appreciates the University of Louisville and all of her students. She is an extremely intelligent woman, and her excitement and passion is contagious.
Ms. Kline is a very nice and dedicated teacher who strives on helping her students. She goes above and beyond with extended office hours and being relatively available to make sure all her students succeed. She is not a passive teacher at all and will only put time into you, if she sees that you are willing to work hard. She also is willing to help students out for their futures and make sure they get the best out of her classes.
Professor Kline always makes sure her students understand the lecture, and she has such a passion for what she's teaching; it really shines through in her classes. I love her enthusiasm and sense of humor.
Outstanding instructor for the most important foundation class for serious business professionals and entrepreneurs! Understanding and applying these basics is key to financial success for all businesses in this highly competitive economic environment. -

Maiying Kong
Bioinformatics and Biostatistics
School of Public Health and Information SciencesI think Dr. Kong is one of the best teachers I have ever seen. Her teaching style is really splendid. -
Hamid Kulosman
Mathematics
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Kulosman was such a fantastic professor. He went above and beyond every day to make sure the class was learning and understanding the material. His notes were clear, and he never wanted to test the class on something we hadn't covered thoroughly and he wasn't sure we were comfortable with. Dr. Kulosman was extremely accommodating and always made himself available to help students in any way he could. You could really tell he cared about his students and wanted us to learn, understand, and appreciate the material. He wanted us to feel and be successful in the classroom. -
Venetia Lacy
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesVenetia is honestly one of the best instructors on campus. Learning a new language is never easy, and of course, we all make silly mistakes. Venetia welcomed us into a safe learning environment. I remember at the beginning of the semester being so overwhelmed with ASL 101, I even complained to my RA about how much I hated it. However, as the semester went on, I learned to appreciate my learning experience. Through Venetia's class I have been introduced to some of the most wonderful people in the deaf community. I have seen a group of people more willing to let us into their lives with open arms. The ASL Department at UofL has really started to feel like family. I can't wait to start ASL 102 and all adventures of next semester. Venetia is one of the best teachers I have had, and I am so grateful to continue learning with her next semester. -
Delin Lai
Fine Arts
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Lai was an enthusiastic and incredibly interesting professor. The material he presented in class was always thought-provoking. I always looked forward to his class. Dr. Lai has been one of my favorite professors at UofL. -

School of Public Health and Information SciencesBest professor ever!!!! Very enthusiastic, comprehensive and has a unique way of teaching. I learned a lot in every class section. -
Erica LaMarche
TRIO Student Support Services
Student AffairsErica has been an angel. She has listened to my (many) rants about some of the not-so-smart fellow students I have, family drama, road rage from delivering Jimmy John's to unsympathetic people who only tip one dollar even though they definitely make more money than I do and can spare at least two dollars. She even listened to me last semester when I was taking Mary Mudd's COMM 319 Debate class, and I told her I wanted to get experience on a debate team. Mary Mudd offered me a judging position in the Wilson-Wyatt Debate League, and when I told Erica, she was so excited for me. Then this semester TRIO students from all over the state of Kentucky came to UofL for TRIO Day. Erica called me and said, "Do you want to be on our debate team for TRIO Day?" She found an opportunity for me to get experience on a debate team. We won by default on TRIO Day, and on the 23rd of April, I am going to Atlanta for a nationwide TRIO Debate. Plus Erica encouraged me to go on a TRIO college visit day at University of Tennessee, Knoxville, which I fell in love with, and I might go there for Law School. -
Meghan Lampe
Women's and Gender Studies
College of Arts and SciencesMC was knowledgeable and allowed us to express our own opinions in a safe, positive environment, which is difficult in a course with as many controversial topics as are in Women in American Culture. -
Michael Losavio
Criminal Justice
College of Arts and SciencesHe made me want to learn. He made class interesting and made the material mean something to us. Not only does he care about teaching, he cares about us as people and tries his best to make a relationship with students. -
Adrian Lauf
Computer Engineering and Computer Science
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringDr. Lauf has made a great difference in my understanding of both concepts and technicalities. He has a gift for bringing a concept to light with ingenious examples, as many as needed, that gave me that "aha!" experience and instantly deepened my grasp of difficult abstractions. His patience seems infinite in stepping through detailed technicalities, making them seem simple and clear. One of the biggest ways he made a difference to me, though, is more subtle: he genuinely believed in me--as he does in all his students--in my ability to understand, to do, to make the inductive leap. More than once, his belief in me pulled me through to a higher level of understanding and ability, which gave me the confidence and motivation to work harder to achieve a higher skill level. His gift for elucidating concepts, patience, and belief in his students has had a major, positive impact on me, as I'm sure it has for his other students. That has made me more confident and more accomplished, not just in the University, but also at work and beyond, and I am very appreciative. -
Tara Lawson
English
College of Arts and SciencesThis teacher is very understanding and truly cares about each one of her students. She explains all assignments and expectations. English is one of my least favorite subjects but she made this class my favorite of all this semester. She is a truly amazing teacher and friend. -

Khotso Libe
Academic Advising Center
College of Arts and SciencesHe was an awesome instructor! I don't think that I would have made it the first couple weeks of my freshman year at the start of the semester without him. He's down-to-earth and very understanding. Anyone can see that he genuinely cares about the welfare of all of his students. He definitely deserves an award. -
Kimcherie Lloyd
Performance Studies
School of MusicMs. Lloyd has been one of the best orchestral directors that I have ever worked with in my career. In addition to her patience, attention to detail, and consistent expectations of excellence on the podium, she has always been on hand as a mentor and advisor to all students who would seek her help. I speak of this firsthand, as I have recently been in a very dark place in terms of my mental health. She has been nothing short of supportive and has even gone out of her way to assist me in making accommodations to help me complete the semester successfully. -
Douglas Lorenz
Bioinformatics and Biostatistics
School of Public Health and Information SciencesDr. Lorenz is one of the best professors I have ever had. He really cares about his students' success.
He is overall one of the best professors I have had at the University of Louisville!
Best instructor, amazing teacher, listens to students' needs, appreciate his patience and hard work for us.
Excellent professor, understanding, and practical approach. Makes a complex, difficult subject matter readily understandable and easy to learn.
He's the best statistics I ever had!
Dr. Lorenz is a remarkable teacher. He is always ready to help, and he makes sure that all questions are answered.
He is wonderful teacher, and I especially like his teaching style. -
Keith Lyle
Psychological and Brain Sciences
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Lyle is one of the best professors I've had at the University of Louisville this far! He is genuinely concerned with the education of his students and is always willing to help anyone succeed. I have been able to attend two of his courses in the Psychology Department, and I can say I have learned more in his two courses than I have in any other undergraduate course. I believe he is deserving of this award because of all his hard work as a professor. Dr. Lyle is very knowledgeable about his scope of practice and works really hard to help students understand the importance of psychology. Dr. Lyle understands the difficulties of attending college and also working, and he doesn't allow his students to fail. Dr. Lyle has influenced my career choice as an undergraduate, and I know I can always go to him for any questions or concerns regarding to cognitive psychology.
He's the only professor I've ever had who quizzed my class at the end of every lecture, which has really benefited my learning, and he has made me enjoy psychology even more.
He allowed me to think about my major once more and has allowed me to enjoy my learning.
Dr. Lyle is an extremely intelligent man! He not only demonstrates immaculate understanding of his course's content but communicates the information to his students extremely well and effectively! If it was possible, I would have him teach me every course for the rest of my college career!
Love his teaching style. -
Katie Lynch
Biology
College of Arts and SciencesI feel complete heartfelt gratitude that Katie Lynch was my instructor for the anatomy and physiology lab. From the beginning of the semester, it was evident that she enjoyed teaching the class. She effortlessly delivered lectures (without notes), and answered any questions with a smile. She made it a point to know every student's name. What makes Katie really great is that she can explain any complex idea in a way that is easy to understand. -
Thomas Mackey
History
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Mackey engages with his students in class through excellent and informative lectures. He requires excellence from his students on exams and a major term paper but will lead every step of the way to get a student there by reading first drafts, meeting in office hours, or simply offering advice to a student. -
Andrew Manikas
Management
College of BusinessDr. Manikas is a great professor in all areas. He is friendly, knowledgeable, and has great communication skills. The material he presents is engaging and interesting, and he makes sure to engage the class in the material. Dr. Manikas always has a smile on his face and his positivity goes a long way. Dr. Manikas makes himself available in his office for questions and is always helpful. Taking Management with Dr. Manikas has been by far the most enjoyable business class I have taken yet, and I hope to have him again in the future. When it comes to my list of favorite professors, Dr. Manikas is near the top, and he deserves recognition for his hard work and dedication to his teaching and students. -

Dismas Masolo
Philosophy
College of Arts and SciencesA great inspiration to all of his students! He lives for what he teaches, and it shows in the way that he is able to animate philosophy for those of us lucky enough to have him in class.
Dr. Masolo has provoked great interest in certain fields of philosophy for me and has always been available when I wished to discuss topics for either study or leisure, despite his busy schedule. In all, I have grown to respect this eccentric man for his passions and care, and I believe he deserves all recognition for his service to his students. -

Ralph Merkel
Communication
College of Arts and SciencesGreat guy.
The greatest professor at UofL. He cares 100% about his students and only wants the best for them. He is kind, funny, and easy to talk to about anything. Clear winner for this award.
Awesome teacher, really learned a lot!
He did a great job making sure our class had fun but also made sure our class learned a lot about video production.
He's the absolute best.
Professor Merkel makes learning exciting. Every day I looked forward to being in his class and I learned so much. I could not have asked for a better professor.
Great teacher. Great guy.
He is the best! Learned a lot and really enjoyed the class. -
Rodney Merkley
Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentRod has been an outstanding leader and educator since my enrollment at UofL. As an online student and working full-time, Rod went out of his way to work with me on my traveling schedule, and he always makes himself available to answer questions and provide guidance on class assignments and lectures. In my opinion, Rod's greatest attribute is his preparation. His classes, materials, assignments, and lectures are very well prepared, ordered logically, and presented in a way that the subject matter can be immediately applied to the job. Rod is an outstanding member of the faculty of UofL, and I am privileged to have been a student under his leadership and teaching.
Rodney Merkley was extremely helpful and worked with me to help me understand the course content and apply what I learned in my workplace. He provided content that enabled me to learn and comprehend the material well enough that I felt that I gained a great deal. He was available to assist and communicated on a level that helped me to complete the coursework with confidence. He was very encouraging when I had doubts about whether I could succeed or complete the material. -
Melissa Merry
Political Science
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Melissa Merry is a phenomenal and engaging professor. She actively engages her students and challenges them to think critically about policies and their influence. Dr. Merry is both an excellent professor and supportive advisor. She has been instrumental in my decision making for furthering my education and is a remarkable professor in the Political Science Department. I am very grateful for her support throughout the years and believe she is exceptionally deserving of this award. -
Cynthia Metz
Physiology
School of MedicineI have never had a professor in my educational career who really understands the concept of "TEACHING" students, and not just "lecturing." It is very clear that Dr. Metz puts a significant amount of time in preparing each of her lectures, really thinking about how she can best help each of her students to learn and understand the material. Even though the material is very difficult, she knows very well how to pace the course, how to challenge us efficiently, and how to keep us all engaged for such a lengthy period of time. What an outstanding professor, I truly wish the University could find professors like her to teach all of the courses, or at the least, train the professors to teach following her methods and style.
It's difficult to find a passionate faculty member such as Dr. Metz. She takes the time to be there for her students, and she's extremely organized. She incorporates different types of learning tools for the material being taught to be engaging and fun. Dr. Metz has made my dental physiology course an enjoyable experience.
Dr. Metz is an extraordinary teacher. She goes above and beyond to make topics clear and relatable. She teaches and uses all kinds of formats to keep the material interesting and fresh. She is very deserving of such an honor.
Dr. Cynthia Metz truly has a talent for teaching. I have never had an instructor who takes truly difficult material and breaks it down in such a way that ALL students find it easy to understand the content. I did complete personal study time outside of class, but the time I needed on my own to understand her material was limited compared to other courses or instructors' lesson plans. She makes herself available for students and NEVER makes a student feel inferior for asking a question. All in all, this course could have been much more difficult than it was, and I am thankful for Dr. Metz and all of her time, energy, and dedication to this position. The Physiology Department is lucky to have her, and the dental students feel even luckier to learn from her.
She is without a doubt the best professor I have ever had, including high school teachers. -
Larry Michalczyk
Kent School of Social WorkMr. Michalcyzk has gone out of his way to help me as a student and aspiring social worker. I took him for a class a year or more ago, but he told us in his class that as we neared graduation, he would be happy to help us with a resume, job search, or anything else we needed. He did just that for me. We sat down this month, he helped me with my resume, and he even gave me tips for my job search. He has gone out of his way to make sure that his students do well and are successful. -

Shawnise Miller
Kent School of Social WorkThis was a difficult choice as there were several faculty who were instrumental in supporting me through graduate school. College of Arts and SciencesRose Mills made my least favorite subject easily my favorite subject. Professor Mills goes out of her way to make sure her students know the fundamentals of English. Her understanding for her students' needs really puts her as an above average professor. -
Laura Moyer
Political Science
College of Arts and SciencesIn my 2 1/2 years at the University of Louisville, Dr. Moyer has been my absolute favorite professor. Her passion for her students and the subjects she teaches is hard, impossible to ignore, and her teaching style never becomes stale (even after having TWO classes with her back-to-back for an entire semester). Dr. Moyer goes above and beyond to make sure her students are succeeding, both in and outside of her class, and always made herself extremely accessible to her students. Just when I was starting to grow tired of Political Science, Dr. Moyer reminded me how much I love the subject. Above all, I can think of no one more deserving of this award.
Dr. Moyer is one of the most passionate professors I have had at UofL and is by far my favorite. She is extremely dedicated to her students and her teaching. She is helpful, both in and out of the classroom. She requires all students to participate but does so in a manner that makes you want to participate. It is very apparent that she cares for each and every one of her students, and this makes a world of difference in a student's learning environment. She has drastically impacted my education here at UofL by being the talented and caring professor that she is and assuring that I receive the highest quality of education from her classes.
She fostered a love of law that helped me choose my life path.
She makes learning really enjoyable. She's always willing to assist students, and she ensures that everyone understands an assignment before it's due (no ambiguous instructions). She's my favorite professor at UofL. -
Robin Mozer
English
College of Arts and SciencesShe is really sweet as a person. She also actually taught us what we did not learn in high school English, grammar. -
Mary Mudd
Communication
College of Arts and SciencesShe does a good job at teaching her classes, and her formats work well. Even if we had a lot of work, it was presented in a relatively easy to accomplish way. She likes to focus on social issues, which is great, because that's really what college is about. There's not too much of a point to learning if you're not applying it in the right way, or if you're incredibly biased. She made me feel included in discussion even though I'm a marginalized student.
Mary Mudd seriously changed my perspective on how I see the world around me this semester in our Gender and Communication course. I truly believe that our discussions in this class made me a better person, and it taught me what I can do to try to make a difference. All of my close family and friends know about Mary and what I learned this past semester because after each session I came home telling them all about it, hoping they might get something from it too. Thanks for being so awesome Mary! Never stop teaching!
Mary Mudd was very helpful. She cares about her students' grades, and she is a great professor.
Mary Mudd was an absolute joy of an instructor; you could truly tell that she cared deeply about her students and her subject.
Mary Mudd has a way of teaching that generates understanding of the content while providing a fun atmosphere where I personally feel comfortable asking questions during lectures, e-mailing her outside of class (and receiving a quick reply!) and in general Mary is a wonderful person. I highly recommend Mary Mudd for this award, and I sincerely hope she gets it! I will be telling all of my friends to take classes with Mary Mudd! -

John Navarro
Criminal Justice
College of Arts and SciencesThis man is by far one of the best instructors I have had the pleasure to work with. I say work with, because as a professor, John took great care to get to know everyone and ensured everyone had what they needed to succeed. His knowledge of criminal justice, mixed with personal stories, greatly enhanced the learning experience. John is a true asset to the university.
Professor Navarro was a great professor. First off, his teaching skills were very unique! It was a lecture type where we got all the information we needed to get, but at the same time it was very interesting. It also helps that he connected all the core content work with real-life examples. As students, we always questioned whether we will ever use the knowledge learned in class outside of class. And Professor Navarro really changes my perspective on that by connecting everything in class with real-life examples. I really enjoyed his teaching styles and his class. If I have the chance, I will be more than happy to take more courses that he teaches.
Amazing teacher, definitely made the class very enjoyable and wish I could take many more courses with him being the professor! -
Rachel Neal
Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences
School of Public Health and Information SciencesIt was a close tie between Dr. Neal and Dr. LaJoie because of their personalities. I chose Dr. Neal because despite the coursework, she still made class enjoyable. Normally, when students find the material to be hard, they tend to dislike coming to class. However, Dr. Neal had an understanding that science isn't everyone's strength area so she gave opportunity after opportunity to be successful in her class. She offered much extra credit and allowed redo's when we did poorly on an assignment. She also offered many extensions and supplemental assignments to take place of an assignment, or simply added those points to a low grade. -
John Nelson
Economics
College of BusinessDr. Nelson's classes are my favorite I've ever had in the business school. He's very knowledgeable about his subject and is an amazing professor. I look forward to going to his class and hearing what he has to say for that day. Economics is my major, and he has made me even more passionate about it.
Go Nelson. -
Mark Noble
Chemistry
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Noble was the best professor. He helped me a lot in general chemistry and is now my advisor. He genuinely cares about me and my academics, and he has been my support team and confidence booster! I would not be as interested in chemistry if it had not been for him! Really a great person and professor. I am very lucky to have him as my advisor!
Dr. Noble completely changed what I had thought about huge lecture classes. With frequent demonstrations, visual aids, and humor, he always made lectures enjoyable and interesting. His textbook makes even difficult and complicated chemistry concepts easy to understand with numerous analogies and examples. He sincerely cares about the success of his students in all their classes, not just in chemistry. -
Nicholaus Noles
Psychological and Brain Sciences
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Noles is an awesome teacher who cares about his students. He knows his information when it comes to his teachings. He is the best of the best.
He is an absolutely amazing teacher. I have learned so much this semester and wish he could teach me every single semester!
Dr. Noles did a fantastic job with this course. He was able to express complex concepts in a way that was easy for many students to relate to and thus better understand. He always kept the classroom interested by quickly and efficiently answering any questions that arose and by being clever and funny. He was well organized and made note taking very easy. Overall, his PSYC 322-01: COGNITIVE PROCESSES FALL 2015 course was difficult and that was an important factor in deciding that it has been the best course I have attended in my college experience thus far.
Dr. Noles is, hands down, the best professor I've ever had in college. He is one of few professors I've encountered whose passion for his field is evident in him every single day of class. This is my third semester of college and, coming out of high school as your stereotypical "smart kid" who was expected to thrive in college, I really lost my passion for learning because it became solely about doing well and meeting expectations. However, one of Dr. Noles' lectures this semester completely reignited that passion for learning that I had lost. He is witty, intelligent, and I am always excited to come to his class.
Dr. Noles is an awesome professor. He makes any class that he teaches exciting and interesting. I've taken two of his classes now, and I found both of them interesting. They made me interested in the material, which made me want to learn even more.
A very passionate and skilled professor, making the class interesting and fun. -

Kent School of Social WorkThough this was Jennifer's first semester teaching, she did fantastic!!! She always made sure that we understood content and made it a point to explain further if needed. The classroom activities that Jennifer incorporated really got our attention and really put the content into perspective. She really makes things fun and interesting. -
Timothy Owens
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesTimothy "Timo" Owens was the key element of the American Sign Language Interpreter Studies Program at the University of Louisville. Through his efforts and dedication, the awareness of deaf culture, deaf education, ASL classes and Interpreter Studies is gaining momentum in the Kentuckiana area. If it were not for "Timo," literally, thousands of deaf and hard of hearing children, through Mini Deaf Olympics (MDO) which "Timo" established, would not have the feeling of community that they have today. Several years ago I found this quote and presented it to him--this is how Timo's legacy will live on: " What we do for ourselves dies with us, What we do for others remains immortal." Albert Pines. We recently lost Timo to cancer. He was a very humble man but very dedicated to his students and the deaf population. He deserves this recognition. -
John Pani
Psychological and Brain Sciences
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Pani exemplifies all the things you would want from a professor, from staying after class to explain topics of interest to students, to loaning books from his personal collection for extracurricular education. He taught with such enthusiasm, it was hard not to be interested. -
Robert Paris
Classical and Modern Languages

The Anthropology Department is truly fortunate to have him--as was I! -
Adrienne Parsons
Engineering Fundamentals
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringProfessor Parsons has been an integral part of my education at Speed School thus far. As someone who recently finished her Ph.D. at this institution, she knows exactly what the current student needs in a professor and steps up to the plate in a way that truly shows how much she cares. I know that I wouldn't have been as successful in my first year, if it were not for her hard work and passion for teaching. If anyone at the University of Louisville deserves recognition for their efforts this year, it's her. -

Michael Perlin
Biology
College of Arts and SciencesOne of the most outstanding professors that I've had the pleasure and honor to meet in my academic career. Dr. Perlin is a truly great professor who deeply cares about his students and their critical reasoning of the imparted material in and outside of the classroom. -
Patrick Pössel
Counseling and Human Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentI am by far blessed to have Dr. Pössel as my faculty advisor. Not only does he make time to meet with me as necessary, but he is concerned about the welfare of all his students and makes an effort to show us that he cares. He has also advocated for me in various ways, including helping me obtain a graduate assistant position for my fourth year in the program. He has helped instill confidence in myself as a graduate student and future psychologist.
Patrick has not only been a great research mentor, professor, advisor, and the reason I chose UofL's counseling psych program, but he also takes time to get to know his students, asks about students' personal lives and how things are going, and very clearly cares about each of his students. He is constantly helping students find opportunities that will help them develop professionally. He motivates his students to do well and is always willing to go the extra mile for his students.
Patrick is an amazing advisor. He is truly invested in his students' growth as researchers, clinicians, and individuals. His support and mentorship are what will help me succeed and stand out in the future.
I have now had the honor of working with Dr. Patrick Pössel as my graduate advisor for three years. During that time, he has used the apprenticeship model to perfection, making all of his advisees aware of any training or learning opportunities from which he believes we will benefit, then encouraging and supporting us in these endeavors. Because of him, I have had incredible learning opportunities such as helping to write an NIH grant, peer reviewing an article submission for a respected journal, contributing to a symposium presentation at a national conference, submitting multiple manuscripts for publication, and more. Beyond that, he is extremely supportive in his advisees' daily experiences in graduate school; he is quick to advocate for his students' best interests, he is empathic and understanding of students' difficulties in balancing school and personal lives, and he helps us ensure our well being as a priority alongside our academic excellence. I am very grateful to have Dr. Patrick Pössel as my advisor and know that I would not have been able to reach this level of my graduate education without him.
Dr. Pössel is not only a life-changing graduate advisor, but a truly talented educator and researcher. In my first year as a doctorate student, he has already gotten me involved in roughly four to five manuscripts, several of which I will be first author on. But, more than that, he cares about each student on an individual basis. Whether it be personal struggles or academic stress, Dr. Pössel is always there to help us be the best scholars that we can be while still maintaining our sanity (something that many graduate students often lose in the process of getting their degree...). Further, he is an asset to any classroom, as he makes 2.5 hour lectures fly by with his interactive style of teaching. Dr. Pössel taught one of the most difficult courses in the program (intellectual assessment), but did so in a fashion that all students felt comfortable making mistakes and learning from them. Dr. Pössel is the reason why I chose this school and the reason why I continue to be grateful for that choice each and every day.
Dr. Pössel has been a phenomenally generous and thoughtful mentor with his time and insight. My career development as a graduate student at this university has been heavily influenced by his constructive mentorship and knowledge. -
Nancy Potter
Philosophy
College of Arts and SciencesShe is amazing. She taught my favorite class, Nature of Violence, and opened my eyes to a lot.
Dr. Potter definitely deserves to be recognized for the various ways in which she goes above and beyond as a professor and mentor. Her classes are informative and engaging, she constantly challenges her students to push themselves to do their best work, and she is always supportive of her students to try out new things and to pursue their wildest dreams. Because of her guidance and support, I am doing something I never would have expected--moving across the country to pursue a graduate degree and teach in Boulder, CO. Dr. Potter's classes have been a central aspect of my college education, and she has played a crucial role in my academic, professional, and personal development. She is a perfect model of what an Academian should strive to be. -

Regina Presley
Health and Sport Sciences
College of Education and Human DevelopmentFantastic
Prof Presley is the absolute best. She puts a lot of hard work into preparing her classes, and she is always excited to teach and share her knowledge with her students. Her classes are helpful in getting prepared for the real world, and she sincerely cares about students. There aren't enough words to explain how excellent she is. She deserves it!!
Gin is one of the most caring professors and advisors I have ever gotten the chance to work with. She knows everyone's name and leaves her door open for students to come in and talk whenever they want. Being away from home, it was always comforting having someone you could go to for not only academics but if you just needed a mom figure to talk to.
She's the best!!
Prof Presley goes above and beyond for all of her students. She holds a firm grasp on what the end game results should look like for students. She enables us to learn and realize what it takes to understand what the job market looks likes out there after college and what it takes to compete for those positions in our major. She spends extra time most professors don't offer and is willing to go the extra mile. I appreciate her efforts and encourage other professors to follow her leadership.
Incredible professor who prepared me for my now career in sports and business.
Professor Presley has been there for me as an advisor and as someone I can go to for any career advice, something I've greatly appreciated over the past few years I have been a part of this program. I hope you will consider her for one of the best faculty members at this University, as she has helped so many people like me achieve their dreams in sports and in life. -

Management
College of BusinessDr. Quinn has a teaching style that I absolutely love. He engages his students to think about situations in their lives that they can live out and practice what he is teaching (this has helped with retaining the information). He is always in a positive mood and keeps the classroom in good spirits. In all of my classes so far, I have learned the most from Dr. Quinn. -
Shira Rabin
Biology
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Rabin is an amazing educator, and I learned so much in her class. She makes the material easy to understand and relatable to the students.
She is the best teacher I have had in awhile. She explains everything clearly and concisely, and it is evident that she is passionate about her job. She is also very accessible to students and is friendly.
Dr. Shira Rabin is an exceptional, very knowledgeable professor. She has a very solid knowledge base on her field of research and has a real gift for lecturing. Also, she creates very well-balanced evaluative systems for her classes, combining essay exams, research paper assignments, and extra points for researching primary literature, which provide excellent opportunities to delve into the world of academic research pertaining to subjects discussed in class.
She is an amazing professor and a wonderful idol for all those who have a desire to major in biology, and/or those who have no idea can be inspired by her. -
Patricia Ralston
Engineering Fundamentals
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringDr. Ralston is one of the most caring, patient, and sincere teachers I have ever had. She communicates complex engineering calculus concepts in a simple and clear manner that makes them easier to understand. She also makes an effort to get to know her students, and she is always very friendly and approachable. She has given me more confidence in my choice of engineering as a major. -
Katherine Ray King
Biology
College of Arts and SciencesI would never have made it through the semester if not for Kat King. She's an amazing teacher, one who actually cares and is going to change the world through educating students. She is truly amazing and deserves this award and so much more. -
Christine Rich
Chemistry
College of Arts and SciencesThis was my first experience taking a course under Dr. Rich, and I was extremely impressed with her as a teacher. Every class period she brought an enthusiasm and passion, combined with an extreme knowledge of the content; not only did she aid in my learning, but she made the most mundane topics enjoyable and exciting. As a teacher, she is very charismatic, and her expertise on various chemistry subjects is evident. She also made herself readily available outside the classroom and maintained the same jovial spirit as she had in the classroom. Of all the teachers I have had, Dr. Rich has stood out the most to me. Dr. Rich went above and beyond as a teacher. She exhibited extreme knowledge and expertise in a wide variety of chemistry topics, and her teaching style stimulated creativity and interest during class. She was readily available outside of class for further discussion of material. Additionally, she showed that she cared more about us as people than just students. She was my teacher of choice to attend the Red and Black Scholar Banquet for athletes and also came to my senior day match which was very meaningful. -

Ryan Ridge
English
College of Arts and SciencesRyan Ridge is very enthusiastic about his subject of Creative Writing and shared that enthusiasm with his students. He is an excellent teacher.
He's a marvelous writer and has done a great job helping those of us in his creative writing courses improve our skills. He helps you learn to do the work yourself without holding your hand the entire time. He's everything a creative writing teacher should be. -
David Roelfs
Sociology
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Roelfs is in his office, accessible to students, all day, every day! I've never felt so welcome when walking into a professor's office with questions, even if they were the silliest of questions. He also organizes his courses so well. He makes sure his students understand the material and makes sure to pace his course according to the ability of his students. Finally, Dr. Roelfs cares more about his students than imaginable, making sure that they are not only learning the material (often statistics), but also that they are comfortable with the class environment. He really is an instructor beyond compare. -
Linda Rogers
English/Liberal Studies
College of Arts and SciencesLinda is like a second mom to so many of her students. I had a difficult start to the beginning of my semester and considered withdrawing for the semester. Luckily, she was so kind and supportive that it began getting easier to get up, fight through my anxiety, and go to class. Without her, I wouldn't have had such a great semester. -
Aaron Rollins
Urban and Public Affairs
College of Arts and SciencesAaron has been an inspiration to me. He was not only interested in my academic life but also mentored me on how to prepare for the academic job market. -
James (Femmy) Rose
Comparative Humanities
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Rose has brought a curiosity and interest in me towards humanities that I never had. It is rare that an instructor is able to influence a student's interest that drastically, simply through their lectures and assignments. Not only in the classroom is Femmy an exceptional teacher, but he is also a leader in our community outside of the classroom and helps to raise awareness for other cultures and to eliminate discrimination. -
Kevin Rose
Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentDr. Rose has exactly the type of engaging style with his students that prompts us to do our very best. He is very approachable and finds ways to consider many different angles or aspects of a topic. He is a credit to the university and should be recognized as such.
Dr. Rose is an excellent teacher who guides students to be the best and to understand complex ideas that might otherwise be lost on them. I nominate him for the Favorite Faculty Award. -
Thomas Roussel
Bioengineering
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringDr. Tommy Roussel, or drT as he prefers, sees us as "whole people," not just students. He wants for us to get a well-rounded, balanced education. He has a genuine desire to see us learn and excel. drT encourages us to stretch beyond our comfort zones, to expand our confidence and capabilities. He creates an environment where we learn to research and figure out what we need to accomplish whatever we want. He pushes us to learn to overcome hesitancies and to not feel intimidated by anything.
Tommy's the best! He's always been concerned with making sure his students gain as much actual experience with circuits, sensors, programming, etc. and has had to really adapt the lab this semester to handle a class that is almost double the previous classes. He's really been focused on individual teaching in small groups, so that the students can get as much one-on-one learning opportunities as possible, even with such a large group as we had this semester.
He is one of the best teachers I have had and genuinely is concerned about the students and the Bioengineering Program as a whole. He wants to see us all be successful. I could go on about how much he helped me in a class that I walked into with complete and utter terror (and walked out feeling confident about my ability and understanding to compete tasks he assigned). It was one of the most beneficial classes I have taken for many reasons, and that class was so successful for me because of Dr. Roussel's teaching style and mentoring. I am going to remember that class forever and (hopefully) the skills that I acquired in order to be successful in my career after graduation.
Dr. Roussel brings a unique approach to relating course material to the field of biomedical engineering through hands-on activities in the lab, as well as bringing complex course material to a relatable level to increase a student's understanding. His patient and inquisitive attitude is contagious to students, and he is always excited to help with both classroom and extracurricular activities. He has taken active roles in student-faculty networking events, public activities such as the Engineering Exposition, and is a part of numerous academic projects within the University. I recommend Dr. Roussel with the highest regards. -
Terri Rowland
Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentI have had two classes with Dr. Rowland, and she is by far the most helpful and encouraging instructor I have ever had. She has high expectations, yet is patient. Her instructions are always extremely clear and concise. Her feedback is never condescending and always encouraging.
Dr. Terri Rowland has been a rock star!! She has been such a valuable resource while I've been enrolled in this program. Her continued feedback and willingness to help her students succeed is what makes her a true gem! -
Christopher Scheidler
English
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Scheidler's teaching style and layout of the course is very well thought-out. I've never had such a great professor. When you needed help, he is always there to assist you with anything. He hosted multiple one-on-one meetings throughout the semester to talk to you about your work in the class and if you're on track. I like his teaching style so much, I'm taking another class of his! -
Matthew Scobee
Mathematics
College of Arts and SciencesYou are awesome. -
Sandra Sephton
Psychological and Brain Sciences
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Sephton is unarguably the best professor I've experienced thus far. In taking her Biological Psychology course, the material was basically all neuroscience. She conveyed such foreign concepts with such clarity and application. Dr. Sephton truly does inspire her students with the knowledge and material she presents. In my book, she's an absolutely excellent educator. -
Mary P. Sheridan
English
College of Arts and SciencesIn my first semester here at the University of Louisville, I have learned that Dr. Mary P. Sheridan is truly one of a kind. Her passion for the subject knows no bounds, and her compassion for her students exceeds that of most professors. Not only does she encourage her students to think critically about the readings, but she encourages interaction with the pieces through a variety of assignments from blog posts, in-class group discussions, and group presentations so we can learn from each other. Her course is formatted in a way that we can try new approaches and learn from our mistakes as we move forward. From the very beginning, one of her main goals was to encourage us to enjoy reading, and she did just that. Not only were the assigned pieces thought-provoking, they were also relatable and diverse in a way that we could all find something to latch onto within each writing. Although I began this course to simply satisfy one of my major requirements, Dr. Sheridan inspired me to think more critically about what I read and to seek out readings that I may never have considered before. Her approach to the coursework and her thoughtfulness towards the needs of her students is what makes her my favorite educator of the fall semester.
Dr. Sheridan has been an amazing teacher to have lead my Women in Literature class. She is a phenomenal person, and I think she deserves this award for being so dedicated to spreading information taught in class. -

Patricia Soucy
Bioengineering
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringDr. Soucy has been instrumental to my success at UofL. Not only is she an excellent teacher, but she is an amazing counselor as well. She has guided me through my coursework, my medical school application process, and through any personal difficulties. My experience at UofL would not have been as excellent without her.
I've worked very closely with Dr. Soucy all through my undergraduate and graduate degrees. As the faculty advisor for the Society of Women Engineers, she is committed to promoting our goals and helping female engineering students to feel supported in whatever they do. As a professor, her door is always open to students who have questions. As a PI, she kindly and wisely advises the students who work on projects in her lab. Many of us in the Bioengineering Department look to her as a role model for personal and professional excellence. I have worked with Dr. Soucy in all three of the above situations (SWE member, student, and lab assistant). She has made such a difference in my life, and I hope you will consider recognizing her for all the hard work she does to help UofL students to be the best they can be.
Dr. Soucy has been one of the most influential people I've met during my college career. I've gotten to know her over the last three years as a professor of two of my classes, a project mentor for both my Senior year Capstone project and my master's degree research project, and also as a coworker in organizing events to recruit Women in Engineering. (She is the faculty adviser for SWE, and I'm the graduate assistant for the Speed Admissions Office.) In every role, I have been consistently impressed with her intelligence, integrity, and compassion. With her PhD in Bioengineering from Johns Hopkins, her intelligence is obvious, yet she openly admits if she doesn't know the answer to a question and will promptly follow up with you after she has looked into it. She is invariably fair, and her integrity is above question. After I finished my master's project, I gave gifts to everyone in the lab that had helped me--she politely returned hers and explained that she didn't want even an illusion of impropriety, since I was also a student earning a grade in one of her classes that semester. Finally, her compassion for students and desire to be approachable sets her apart from many of the faculty. With her PhD from Johns Hopkins, it would have been easy to go to the bigger engineering schools, but I've heard her explain that she wanted a smaller environment where she could get to know her students and encourage their individual interests. Dr. Soucy is truly a superb researcher/advisor/professor and absolutely deserves to be recognized for it. Feel free to contact me if you'd like more examples of just how much she deserves this honor!
Dr. Soucy has been a great advisor for the Society of Women Engineers. She is always willing to meet with students about classwork, working in her lab, or anything else they wish to discuss. She puts her students first and always hands back assignments on time, which is extremely important as a student. Personally, she has helped me with career advice and courses that I am about to take.
Dr. Soucy cares deeply about bioengineering and her students. She is happy to help any student who is struggling. I greatly appreciate all that Dr. Soucy has done for her students and the Department of Bioengineering.
Dr. Soucy is consistently available to assist any student that reaches out to her for advice. She will go above and beyond her job description to help them reach their goal. Personally, she has spent countless hours helping me find and capitalize on opportunities to develop professionally, personally, and academically. She has been a paramount asset in planning and achieving my goals. Additionally, it should be noted that I am not her single focus. She has been invaluable in the education of my classmates as well as myself.
Dr. Soucy has gone above and beyond with helping students for her classes. Over the years, she has met with me for countless hours outside of class to discuss course material and answer questions, and also help with questions about future endeavors, and possible future goals and employments. She has been a great advisor for courses, professional advice and other academic or personal advice as well. When I was struggling academically, Dr. Soucy worked with me to reinstate my scholarship and worked with me to stay motivated. She's been one of the best professors and advisors! -
Ian Stansel
English
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Ian Stansel was absolutely terrific. I am an honors student, and I needed to find a professor to supervise my thesis project. I had never met Dr. Stansel before I knocked on his door to desperately ask if he would take on the task. I had spoken with a few other professors who all said they were too busy to supervise my thesis. Ian read over my proposal and enthusiastically encouraged me to pursue my idea and that he would whole-heartedly support and supervise my work. The whole semester of working with Dr. Stansel was a delight. He was optimistic, always in a great mood, and sincerely guided me down the path to success. It was obvious that he had a lot of work on his plate from the other classes he taught, but he never acted like he was too busy to discuss my project or answer my questions. He is by far one of the greatest professors the University of Louisville has to offer. -
Thomas Starr
Chemical Engineering
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringHe is a very compassionate professor. He cares about how my classmates and I perform in CHE 211, and he is doing everything he can to reach all of his students so that they can perform to the best of their abilities. He's one of the nicest professors I have ever met, and I really enjoy his class. If my classmates put half the work into the course as it required, then they would realize how great of a job Dr. Starr does. -
Christine Steineck
Communication
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Steineck cares so much about the success of her students. She is understanding, and she makes the material easy to grasp and interesting.
Christine is one of the best professors I have had at UofL. Every one of her classes that I have taken have been fun and interesting. She is real with the students and really cares about us as people. -

Chad Stephens
Chemistry
College of Arts and SciencesSince taking General Chemistry my freshmen year, it was evident that Chad was an incredible Teaching Assistant. This year in Organic Chemistry, everyone in my class was fascinated with how much Chad knew and how well he was able to teach it. It is obvious that he works hard, the teachers and department trust him, and he is always willing to go out of his way to help teach us what we need. I can't wait to have him as my TA next semester for Organic 2! -

Thomas Stewart
Comparative Humanities
College of Arts and SciencesHe truly enjoys his classes and teaching. For one of the few times during my college career, an instructor showed passion in teaching. He not only makes it enjoyable, knows his information, but all-around is a great teacher. His humor and personality add a unique touch to the class, and he was always excited about everything. He really wants to teach each student and is determined to make a difference in every student's life. I appreciated everything he did either for me or the class this year and truly hope he is recognized for all of his hard work.
Probably the best professor I've ever had at UofL. Dr. Stewart loves teaching and is really good at it! I've had the pleasure of taking Dr. Stewart's courses three times thus far, and every time I learn SO much and feel more confident in my studies.
He's a great professor!
Professor Stewart has been the best professor I've had at UofL. He makes difficult subjects fun and interesting. He's very organized and detailed, and he's very good at making students feel comfortable and smart. He never makes anyone feel like their question was dumb or unnecessary. -

Kaila Story
Pan-African Studies/Women's and Gender Studies
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Story is an awesome and amazing teacher! Her style of teaching is so passionate and raw that I never wanted to leave her classes! I hope everyone who enters the University of Louisville has the opportunity to take at least one of her classes because she is so great! Dr. Story made a difference and an impact on my life in just a short period of time which is why I nominate her as my favorite educator!
Dr. Story is one of the best professors that I've ever had! I love every minute of her classes and can't wait for them; I look forward to them every Tuesday and Thursday!
The best professor here at the university!! Very enlightening! She changed my perspective on things! She basically changed my life!
By far the best professor I have experienced in my lifetime. Really cares about her students. -
Kristin Swartz
Criminal Justice
College of Arts and SciencesAbsolutely one of the best professors I have had. Takes the time to learn students' names. Delivers her lectures with enthusiasm and a passion to educate.
I absolutely love this professor, and I did not want the class to end. Dr. Swartz makes her classes fun and designs the course to help her students rather than designing tests and assignments that could easily jeopardize a student's grade. She is a professor who you don't dread talking to about an issue, because she is very understanding and will work with students to provide a solution that best fits the student's needs. As Dr. Swartz says, "Once a Swartz student, always a Swartz student," which that in itself exemplifies what an awesome professor she is. Thank you, Dr. Swartz, for making this semester a fun semester!
Dr. Swartz has a fabulous way of teaching. She has an agenda, but she is not so focused on completing the agenda. She is more focused on making sure we understand the concepts, theories, and principles of the lesson. She is nice, open to discussion on theories that are being taught, she works with sex offenders which is totally badass (being that I am studying to become a lawyer with a specialization in sex crimes, not because I'm a weird person!) -
Denise Tanner
English
College of Arts and SciencesProfessor Tanner is an outstanding instructor. In my three years of attending the University of Louisville, she has been the only professor who has made me feel like a human being as opposed to just another head in a classroom. While professors commonly see students as a side effect of their paycheck, Professor Tanner showed me that there are still professors out there whose focus is on the pupil instead of the money.
Denise is an excellent professor. She lays out the class in a way that is easy to follow and is easy to learn from. She makes class fun and encourages group work which forces student to get to know one another. I think she is totally awesome and thoroughly enjoyed her class. If you fail any of her courses, it's because you didn't apply yourself at all. Great professor, probably the best at UofL.
Professor Tanner is always available to her students, and I was able to call her or email her at any time throughout the semester for her guidance or input. She carefully reviews all submitted work and has a keen eye for detail. Her editing is top-notch, and as a writer, I have benefited a great deal from her suggestions. She truly cares about her students, and this is wholly apparent in every interaction I have had with her. She makes me wish I was an English major! -
John Tatarko
Chemical Engineering
J.B. Speed School of EngineeringDr. Tatarko has proved time and time again his dedication to student success, not only in the classroom but more importantly in future endeavors outside of the classroom. My favorite thing he said was: "Numbers are useless, they only give you answers." In a department where so many tests are based solely on the right answers, hearing that he is more interested in the actual understanding of the material is so nice. He doesn't just want us to get an answer but to prove that in the real world we can solve these problems. His class is the happy medium of interactive group work and facilitated teaching. I can say that concepts that I should have learned in other classes but never quite grasped, he retaught to ensure our understanding. Furthermore, he cared about each and every student--he took the initiative to ask us about our lives and create a relationship and understood that we are college students who sometimes may not have the time for a hard test the same day as another hard test. It's quite a different feeling at the end of the semester when you wish his class didn't end. I was pushed to think in a new way and find a passion for the work I was completing and that is something I have never been challenged to do to a level that increased my passion for my field of study. All of the class collectively begged him to teach another class; not because he was easy but because he cared and challenged our actual knowledge past the answers that he claimed were useless. Dr. Tatarko is a faculty member who deserves to be recognized for more reasons than any short essay could include. -
James Taylor
Health Management and Systems Sciences
School of Public Health and Information SciencesI was fortunate enough to have Dr. Taylor as my practicum advisor during my second year of the MPH program. Dr. Taylor is a very experienced leader, and I learned a great deal from him. He brings a unique perspective to his class, and it was unlike any class setting I have ever experienced. In addition, his professionalism and willingness to help as my advisor made all the difference in my experience with the program. Dr. Taylor even took the time to review my resume and gave me tremendous feedback that helped me create an excellent resume. Professors and advisors like Dr. Taylor are rare, and I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with him. -
Kira Taylor
Epidemiology and Population Health
School of Public Health and Information SciencesA
Dr. Taylor is always open to questions, even to students who aren't taking any of her classes during that semester. Additionally, she is fully accepting of students who want to sit in on a specific exercise she is doing in her class, whether you are registered or not. Dr. Taylor is the best!!
Dr. Taylor is one of the most passionate instructors I have had in both my undergraduate and graduate careers. At the graduate level, at least in my experience, it has been difficult to find an instructor who is equally passionate about teaching and conducting research. Dr. Taylor's M.A.Ed. degree and prior teaching experience are evident in each of her lectures, as they include the perfect balance of the organized presentation of new material, example problems to work through in class, and reflection summaries at the end of each lecture to ensure that students understood the lecture's key take-away points. Dr. Taylor presented a large amount of material throughout the semester, but the amount was manageable thanks to her successful teaching style and constant availability to answer students' questions. I have taken numerous mathematics, statistics, and methods courses throughout my university career; however, I have never had an instructor present the material as effectively as Dr. Taylor has. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be her student this semester.
Dr. Taylor always made it a priority to ensure that the students understood the lessons. She asked questions and explained the information in several ways, with an understanding that everyone learns differently. She kept the students engaged and also has a sense of humor. -

Michael Voor
Orthopaedic Surgery/Bioengineering
School of Medicine/J.B. Speed School of EngineeringDr. Voor teaches a subject that's difficult for many students to learn, especially for me. He works to put together and manage a curriculum using different resources that helps students. He is willing to spend as much time as we need to understand the concepts and put everything together, even outside of office hours. He explains concepts and processes in a way that I can understand. He cares about students and wants for us to learn and understand what he's teaching us and for us to be able to use this education in our careers. -
Lisa Wagner
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesDra. Wagner is by far the best professor I have had at the University of Louisville. She is kind, caring and absolutely invested in her students. She is devoted to meeting with students individually at least once throughout the semester, and I appreciated this extra effort greatly. She seeks to improve her students' language abilities with every classroom activity, and she is successful in this pursuit. My Spanish noticeably improved over the course of the semester, and she was able to reignite my passion for the language as well. I will not hesitate to take one of Dra. Wagner's classes again in the future. Thank you for all you do, Dra. Wagner--it does not go unnoticed or unappreciated!
Profesora Wagner goes above and beyond the call of a professor. She makes learning a foreign language very enjoyable and realistic. I, as well as my classmates, love being her student, and this university is a much better place with her on faculty.
The best professor of Spanish at the University of Louisville. Dr. Wagner sincerely cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed in their studies and beyond! -

Justin Walker
Brandeis School of LawI feel that Justin Walker did an excellent job teaching, made even better by the fact that it is his first year at UofL. He went above and beyond his job description by meeting with students at late hours when deadlines required it, being available often, giving great feedback, and expressing enthusiasm about the law. He even went so far as to help set up a trip to Washington for students to see DC in action and learn more about our country's capitol. -
Kandi Walker

Jack Wallen
Theatre Arts
College of Arts and SciencesJack was probably the best professor I had. Not only is he a great professor but he is an even better person. He believed in me most when I didn't believe in myself, and he brought out the best in all of us in the class. His crazy antics and wild nature showed us that it was okay to be the person you've always wanted to be. Connection was key to success in his class and connection with him made it that much better. -
Ahmad Washington
Counseling and Human Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentAlthough Dr. Washington is new to the University of Louisville this semester, he has been nothing but helpful and inspiring.
Dr. Washington is wonderful. It is obvious that he really cares about us and the students we serve as school counseling interns. He is positive and down-to-earth. He has made an instant impact in our department. Dr. Washington pushes us to be better but does so in a fun way. He has made a safe environment for us to take intellectual risks and share successes and concerns about our internships. His class is one that I look forward to and do not mind if it runs over time. It is truly enjoyable, and I have learned a lot from him! Because of him, I feel more prepared to enter the school counseling profession.
Dr. Washington always made his class a fun, learning experience. I looked forward to coming to his class every week. Dr. Washington seems to truly care about his students' success. He is a very dedicated professor and is willing to meet with students whenever they need assistance or have a question. Dr. Washington is fantastic, and I'm grateful UofL has brought him to the Counseling and Human Development Department this semester! -
Michael Waterman
Management
College of BusinessHe is a great professor! Tough, but fair. Always willing to help. -
Steven Watkins
Comparative Humanities
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Watkins was very well posed in his manner toward students. If anyone had a question, he made sure to answer it the best that he could. The course load was extremely reasonable, and the appropriate time was given to complete any homework or projects. Nothing we did in class was overwhelming nor explained in a manner we couldn't understand. Greek Myth is very complex and tedious, but Dr. Watkins turned it into something fun and interesting. I can honestly say he is one of the best professors that I've ever had the privilege to meet. -
Timothy Weaver
Political Science
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Weaver is an excellent instructor who provides intellectual and thought-provoking classroom discussions. His course challenged me to address systemic issues and analyze the larger questions at hand. Through his final paper, he urged us to think critically and delve deeper into the real and prevalent aspects of poverty in our urban world. I would highly recommend Dr. Weaver for this award and believe he is an exceptionally deserving professor. -

Allison Whitehouse
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesShe is amazing in every way.
This is the first semester I've had Professor Whitehouse for French 121, and I was delightfully surprised by her class. She's knowledgeable in her field, but because of her corky attitude and approachable manner, her class was that much more fun to go to. Not only that, but that class wasn't too hard with the way that she taught. Any questions you had she would gladly answer, and going to her class always perked you up a bit because of the light-heartedness she created. Good professor, good class. -
Jeneen Wiche

Richard Wilson
Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences
School of Public Health and Information SciencesI am graduating from the MPH program in May 2016, and although I did not concentrate in Promotion/Behavioral Science, Dr. Wilson became one of my favorite professors during my experience with the program. I opted to concentrate in Management, however, my practicum worked more in the area of Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Wilson was always available as a resource for me when I had questions regarding my practicum. He genuinely seemed interested in helping me and was invested in my success as a student. He would randomly stop me in the hallway to ask how my practicum was going and how my presentations and projects went. This really meant a lot to me and was a HUGE help to me during my time in the program. The MPH program is lucky to have such a talented, professional, and genuine educator like Dr. Wilson! -
Hongryun Woo
Counseling and Human Development
College of Education and Human DevelopmentDr. Woo is a wonderful woman. She really cares about us. She is always willing to help us--even after we have taken her classes. I had her three semesters in a row, and I appreciated how warm and kind she was every single class. Dr. Woo's class was often the highlight of my week. She is always well prepared and did a spectacular job of preparing us for internship experiences. She also helped us immensely by assigning papers and projects for her classes that also fulfilled requirements for our graduation portfolios. She is an all-around good person, and I feel privileged to have had her as my professor.
Dr. Woo was one of the first professors I met when I started my graduate program last fall. Dr. Woo is always very kind and welcoming to students. She consistently offers help to students and is willing to aid students in any way she can. Dr. Woo is very passionate about the counseling field and wants her students to succeed in the field. Overall, Dr. Woo is awesome! -

J.B. Speed School of EngineeringHe is really great professor.
Dr. Yampolskiy encouraged me to get back in school. He is one of my current professors. Even though I'm doing distance education, he has made himself more available than some professors I've had in classes that we actually met for. He is engaged in his field of study and makes it entertaining to watch his ideas, publications, and other projects develop. Everyone is allowed to participate, and he does not come off as an elitist as some others who are in fields developing this quickly.
Lectures were awesome.
Great teacher--very encouraging to new students.
Dr. Yampolskiy is an incredible and very humorous lecturer who cares greatly about his students' progression in class and overall well being. He mixes his lectures with comical comments to keep his students intrigued. Although his kindness and his drive to help students is warming, it is somewhat commonplace among a good amount of professors at UofL. What sets Dr. Yampolskiy apart is his ability to challenge his students in a way that makes them foam at the mouth for a chance to surmount the challenge. I look forward to taking his other classes in the future.
He always made class interesting and was always willing to help.
Very easy to understand, connects with students, fun class.
Dr. Yampolskiy was an exceptional professor: helpful, talented, unintimidating, clear, motivational, and inviting. His A.I. curriculum was the best I've had in college, progressing smoothly and logically from simple to complex topics in model fashion. I benefited tremendously from his instruction and regret that he teaches only a single course in A.I.
Engaging, fun to listen to, cares about students.
Nice teacher, willing to help you with problems.
He really made a difference! -

Wendy Yoder
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesAbsolutely amazing professor! I've never had a teacher who cared for her students so much and did everything she could to help us to our full potentials. Dr. Yoder has a gift in making the classroom a fun place to learn.
Dr. Yoder was absolutely the best, most supportive faculty member I had the pleasure of knowing and having in class during my four years at UofL. I had a particularly difficult last two semesters, with family issues and mental health issues. However, Dr. Yoder was very willing to work with me in the classes I had of hers and even went out of her way to encourage me. My performance in school and overall health was greatly improved because of her genuine interest in her students, her dedication to teaching, and her general attitude of encouragement and sympathy.
She is absolutely amazing in and outside of the classroom with ALL of her students. So very personal and strives to help you succeed in all that you do!!! -
Deborah Yoder-Himes
Biology
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Yoder-Himes was an incredible teacher for my microbiology course (BIOL 357). Everything about the class structure was extremely professional. PowerPoints were up ahead of time with supplemental material. Lecture material incorporated modern methodology and new discoveries in microbiology, which provided an interesting insight into how microbiology is actually applied on a day-to-day basis. Every lecture was recorded and available on Tegrity. Assignment instructions were clear and the assignments were graded quickly. Test results were available promptly. Internet-based resources were integrated fluidly. Other instructors have tried, but I've seldom seen it done without an overall negative contribution to the class in almost five years of undergraduate study. Beyond that, Dr. Yoder-Himes stressed the necessity of critical thinking in regards to scientific information, which was reflected in and developed through the three writing assignments. I believe this is an invaluable skill that I learned as a result of taking Dr. Yoder-Himes' course. I've rarely come across an instructor who is so immensely knowledgeable about their field and so enthusiastically able to pass on their knowledge. I have recommended Dr. Yoder-Himes to several of my peers and will continue to do so in the future.
Dr. Yoder-Himes has been an excellent teacher. I took her Microbiology and Virology classes offered. I feel that through her teaching, I learned so much as well as skills and information that I can further use in my future career. She had been an amazing support system and mentor. -
Jason Young
Chemistry
College of Arts and SciencesAs a TA, Jason went above and beyond his duties. While many of the labs I had taken previously were boring and mundane, Jason found a way to make lab an exciting place to be and fostered an interest in hands-on chemistry. He was also extremely helpful and pushed us to open our minds about different topics in chemistry. Jason was extremely pleasant every lab session and always had a smile on his face. His love of chemistry was infectious, and he found a way to stimulate our interests. -
Nadeem Zaman
Comparative Humanities
College of Arts and SciencesHe made class so understandable. He would take extra time out of his day to make sure we understood curriculum. He would always run over papers with me and give me suggestions, and when I couldn't make it to office hours, he would always make appointments. So helpful and such a fun professor. -
Thomas Zehnder
Economics
College of BusinessMost students would hate going to class on a Saturday morning, but I absolutely loved this class and showed up every chance that I could. He made a subject fun that would normally be boring to most people. No matter how tired I was, he could make everyone smile with the jokes that he would tell. He is a great teacher and really understanding. -
Li Zeng
Classical and Modern Languages
College of Arts and SciencesHe was one of the first instructors on campus who actually helped me during and after class with my disability and didn't make me feel unwelcomed in his class because of it. -
Charles Ziegler
Political Science
College of Arts and SciencesDr. Ziegler is without question the most demanding instructor I have had throughout my academic career. The standards he holds us to are much higher than that of the vast majority of my classes. Simultaneously, he offers encouragement, explains material that is complex in a way that is understandable, and considering his expertise in the field and his academic contributions to the literature, this is a rare quality. As a result, I have learned more, thought more critically, and conceptualized ideas within political science in a way that signifies I understand my field in a deeper, more meaningful way. The extent to which he deserves official recognition for his contribution to each student who steps foot in class is unequivocal. -
