Ayman El-Baz Bioengineering J.B. Speed School of Engineering I have been deeply influenced by Dr. El-Baz as an instructor. He taught me BE600. His attitude towards students is excellent. His major aim is to make the student fully understand the materials and be capable of starting their own research. His door is always open for any type of question, either in the materials or even in any research problem that students may face. El-Baz is always willing to give, share, and appreciate, and this have made him one of the most "loved" persons within the department and students as well. Dr. El-Baz's attitude is that everyone, pulling together, can make the University of Louisville a better place to work, a better place for research, and a better place for students to get a true education. He also has a very effective way of educating, and I fully recommend him for the faculty award. * Dr. El-Baz possesses great characteristics as an effective educator. I wish to show my personal enthusiastic support to Dr. El-Baz in his pursuit of this award. I am confident that he will continue to make outstanding progress and to aid even more students in the future. * He is a great instructor. * An instructor who is always willing to give limitless amounts of his time to help his students. Dr. El-Baz has been a great asset to the U of L engineering program. He is an excellent instructor, always willing to offer time and assistance to students. One of the best I have ever had the privilege to study under. * Dr. El-Baz is a student-first professor. He treats his students with great respect and cares a lot about each individual student's capability to grasp the difficult course of Medical Imaging. Dr. El-Baz has also personally motivated me to stay on top of my class work and thesis. * He made a significant impact on my learning. * Dr. El-Baz didn't just teach us the theory behind medical image analysis --he gave us an opportunity to learn real, applied techniques being used in industry and academia. Learning by doing was a far more effective approach in the classroom than a traditional lecture. Dr. El-Baz was also instrumental to helping me get published this year. He has consistently advocated for me and helped me to be successful at U of L. * I had a great experience with my instructor; he helped me a lot and was very helpful with my graduate education. I would really like to nominate him for my favorite faculty. * Dr. El-Baz's class in medical image analysis was very beneficial in how it educated students in the current techniques used for analysis of medical images presented in the literature. Dr. El-Baz was always very willing to help students in any way that he could, so that they could better understand and master the material. * Dr. El-Baz taught me a lot of scientific methodologies of how to develop algorithms and techniques in my research area of interest. He also supported and encouraged all students. From my point of view , Dr. El-Baz has a high impact on undergraduate and graduate students. * Dr. El-Baz really cares about the students he teaches and wants to see them succeed and learn fundamental concepts, not just the art of regurgitation! * He is completely focused on making sure we are learning instead of focused on his research. His class lecture presentations are also well put together and help when there are any communication lapses or we 'zone' out for a minute as a student. He is the best teacher I have had in the engineering department. * Dr. El-Baz encourages us to ask questions and really enjoys helping students understand what is taught in class. * Dr. El-Baz is a very good professor who makes the material clear and easy to understand. * Great class. Focused, instructive, fun. * Dr. El-Baz is always willing to set time aside to help a student out. He consistently and freely gives advice on how to succeed in our academic work. * Dr. El-Baz works incredibly hard to set his students up for success through incredible organization and clarity in his teaching. He is a FANTASTIC teacher and person. * He is a great instructor. * Dr. El-Baz has been an excellent teacher for both BE 340 and BE 420. He is extremely excited to teach students about applying computer programming and mathematical concepts, such as Laplace transforms, to real life problems. The knowledge he has given me has been applicable to problems I encountered during my internship. * He thoroughly explains everything.
Theresa Hayden Justice Administration College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Hayden is one of the best professors that I have had during my time at the University of Louisville. She cares about her students and will put in as much time as needed to ensure their success. She comes to every class with a smile and positive attitude. She is a great professor who really made an impact on my academic and professional career. She is always available to students and pushes them to do their best. * Professor Hayden has always pushed her students to learn more and apply the knowledge that they learn. Most professors want you to learn the knowledge without applying it. Dr. Hayden's teaching is strategic and has a great emphasis on applying the information learned. * She is one of the best teachers that I have ever had. She genuinely cares about the students and the material that she teaches. * I'd like to nominate Professor Hayden for her work on raising awareness of Human Trafficking in the community. * Human Trafficking is one of the most informative courses at the University. * Dr. Hayden works very hard to engage her students in useful, valuable information that will help us in our future careers. She gets to know each student personally and cares about each individual student. She is by far the best professor I have met in three years of being at UofL. When I encountered an awful situation where one of my good friends passed away in a car accident this semester, Dr. Hayden was the most understanding and kind person I could have asked for. She took me to her office and talked to me because she had noticed I wasn't performing at my usual standard. She noticed that because she truly is in touch with her students and knows when something is bothering them. I hope she wins this award because I can't think of a more deserving person. * Dr. Hayden's passion for her courses shows through her enthusiasm. I learned a great deal and look forward to taking her next semester, which will be the third time I have had her for a course. * I've had her for four or five years now and am sad I won't be taking anymore of her classes! She is an awesome, knowledgeable, inspiring woman. I've learned so much from her class, as well as herself! Go Hayden! * I would like to nominate Dr. Hayden for Fall 2011 Favorite Professor! She is the greatest teacher I have had in any department at UofL! She is a very passionate professor who cares about her student's education. * An amazing professor who is caring and willing to take the time out of her day to help you with anything. Great, even teaching a difficult subject like research. Best professor I have had by far. * Dr. Hayden made research a joy to discover, and her enthusiasm is inspiring. She leaves no student behind!! * Literally the best teacher I have had in my college career. She is amazing at inspiring her students to want to do something and work hard. * Theresa's teaching method was fantastic! I have already begun to utilize my skills and knowledge acquired in her research course.
Ann Herd Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development I learned a great deal about human resources through her challenging course! * Dr. Herd did a fantastic job using Blackboard. She clearly defined our assignments--when they were due and how to accomplish the end result. Her responses were very quick. Great Instructor. * Dr. Herd deserves recognition for her hard work and dedication. She is awesome with online students. Very positive and encouraging! * This is my eighth online class within this program. I have learned more about leadership from Dr. Herd than in any other leadership class. Her enthusiasm, motivation, and confidence, as well as the confidence she has in me, has caused positive changes in my life. Her ability to make such meaningful changes in one's life and influencing me to continue the process has been inspirational, not to mention the fact she does all of this via Blackboard and e-mails. * Dr. Herd is one of the most challenging professors I have encountered during my college experience. By far, from her I have learned the most. As an instructor, she is excellent. She is thorough, helpful, and informed. She sets very high expectations for her students but also helps her students rise to meet her expectations. I have had to work extremely hard and push myself academically to succeed in Dr. Herd's classes, however, I am grateful for having her as an instructor because she has provided me with extensive knowledge, skills, and abilities that will enhance my performance as an HR professional. Dr. Herd is dedicated to this program, and she is dedicated to her students. I appreciate her very much. * I have had Dr. Herd for two semesters now, and her organizational skills and layout of online education is second to none. She takes the anxiety out of distance education by providing clear structure. * Ann is an excellent teacher and excels when it comes to online classes and adult learners. She was always prepared, always in tune with the students, and did an excellent job in setting the expectations of the class. * She makes online learning less painful. * Dr. Herd is a WONDERFUL instructor and has been a godsend to me this semester! She goes above and beyond to assist all of her students on a daily basis, in addition to taking the time to get to know them personally. She not only helped me academically this semester, but personally as well, and if it were not for these caring traits (as well as just being there to listen), I would have had great difficulty with all of my classes this semester. She is a genuine asset to not only the Workforce Leadership program but to the entire University of Louisville and someone I am proud to have the ability to say was a professor that absolutely made a difference! There is a saying in my family that sums up Dr. Herd--she's "a keeper"--who is deserving of every accolade that can be bestowed!!! * I have had the pleasure and honor of having Dr. Herd for the last two semesters and am looking forward to one more course with here during the summer. She has probably been one of the best and certainly most influential professors as I continue my education but also as a peer and mentor as I plan the next stages of my career. I can think of no other more fitting than her to receive this honor. * Dr. Herd is your biggest fan and cheerleader should you have her for class. She genuinely cares about your goals and future and offers you all the support and direction available. Wish I could complete my degree with all Ann Herd classes! * I would like to nominate Dr. Ann Herd as an instructor who has definitely made a significant impact on my learning during the Spring Semester and previously. Ann sets high but attainable standards for her students and models excellent learning behaviors for her students to follow. From the beginning of class, Ann asks about students' interests, shows interest in them, and shares interests of her own. She always follows up with additional information and resources for further study. She has been very encouraging to me personally in my studies and career path. This began before this semester started, when it looked like I would not be able to register for her class, which was one of two I needed to graduate on schedule. Rather than just ignoring me as someone on the waiting list, she worked with me and my advisor, explaining the difficulty through emails, but also offering to talk over the phone if needed. She remained open to working out a solution with my advisor, and I was able to take the required class. This continued to be her method of operating and communicating during the course. She was always accessible and always replied promptly and thoroughly. I benefited from her encouraging remarks, not only to me, but to my other online classmates. Anytime any of us began to veer slightly off point, she would steer us back. She would give examples, illustrations, and more in-depth resources to make sure we understood. Our subject this semester was Supporting Organizational Change, and Ann always showed how its application extended from class to workplace. I will be drawing from the learning and resources she helped me with as I continue in my career and beyond the bachelor's I am scheduled to complete this summer. Ann has encouraged me and my classmates to keep in touch. That will be our privilege, just as it has been to be in her classes.
Alan Smith Surgery School of Medicine Dr. Smith is always full of energy, explains concepts in multiple ways, and encourages each and every student to reach their full potential in the school and clinical setting. Dr. Smith teaches neurology, and it is not an easy class. He constantly challenges us and continues to help us critically think through each problem. Tests are very long, case studies are even longer, but at the end of the day, when I have reached a potential diagnosis, I feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in my ability to use my knowledge to empower myself, empower and treat others, and move forward towards my degree. * He is an outstanding professor, and even though he is extremely tough, I am very grateful to him for preparing me in my field. * Dr. Smith is a really, really challenging teacher. He works really hard to make sure that we are prepared when we enter the workforce, even when that means more work for him. * Not only an amazing SLP, an amazing professor! * He is an amazing teacher who truly cares about his students and challenges us to become not only better clinicians but better individuals. * Creative--Committed--Concerned--Conscientious--Courteous--Competent--Confident--Clever--Catalyst--Crucial!!! * Dr. Smith is very passionate about sharing his knowledge with his students and ensuring that he contributes to their success. * Dr. Smith is an enthusiastic instructor with a real passion for what he is teaching. Dr. Smith is passionate about speech-language pathology and it shows in his teaching. He truly wants everyone in his classes to succeed. Dr. Smith is very helpful and goes out of his way to be certain we all understand the material and can apply it to real situations. He is definitely preparing us to enter the workforce as effective speech-language pathologists which will in turn reflect well on the University of Louisville and the SLP program they offer. * Professor of the Speech Language Pathology/Communication Disorders graduate program.

Annette Allen Humanities College of Arts and Sciences A knowledgeable and compassionate professor who makes the material fascinating. * Dr. Allen's enthusiasm is contagious. Her upbeat and engaging teaching style makes students look forward to the next class. * Dr. Allen is extremely thorough in her written comments to students (which takes an extraordinary amount of her personal time) and is extremely dedicated to providing the richest educational experience any one professor can offer.
David Anderson English College of Arts and Sciences Professor Anderson is so fun and enthusiastic! He enjoys the material he teaches and provides several outlets of understanding.
Viviana Andreescu Justice Administration College of Arts and Sciences I would like to nominate my teacher, Ms. Viviana Andreescu, of the Justice Administration Department, as a nominee for the 2011-12 Faculty Favorite Award. This teacher puts forth 100% to any student, whether undergrad or grad student and shows compassion at all times to their needs. She is 100% willing to work with any student at any given time and wants only the best for that student. She is compassionate and caring and puts the student's needs above her own without asking. This teacher is also one of the top teachers in the JA Department and should be recognized for this award. * Dr. Andreescu only excels in her service to education in two areas: in the classroom and outside of it. I had Dr. Andreescu for Criminal Theories two semesters ago and was immediately struck by both her knowledge of the subject as well as her genuine concern for students. In my opinion, Dr. Andreescu embodies the best blend of college professor: she's accomplished and oft-published in her field, but she's also accessible and committed to the art of classroom teaching. Since that Theories class, we've kept in touch, and she's offered to help me in a Fall class with which I know, as an undergrad English/Journalism major, I'm going to greatly struggle: stats. Dr. Andreescu has sort of volunteered to mentor and tutor me this summer to prep for the class, and I'm sure she'll be there during the actual course when the time comes. I cannot adequately express how much better that makes me feel -- that confidence and extra security will undoubtedly help me succeed in a class that Dr. Andreescu isn't even instructing.
Mary Ashlock Communication College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Ashlock is the best professor I ever had during my college career. It is because of her that I have realized my calling in life. I truly don't know where I would be today without her guidance, wisdom, and support. She is the best thing that ever happened to UofL. * Dr. Ashlock has been my lighthouse in a sea of undergrad fog and darkness. She has helped to light the way for my entire college career and has been a mentor and friend. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and she is on board 100% with whatever path I want to take. She has truly changed my college experience at UofL. Without her, I wouldn't have figured out what I really want to do. It was in one of her classes a few semesters ago that I got really interested in my field. She has helped me in numerous ways, but her support is really what got me through. She is understanding and knows how to relate to students on their level. I can't count the number of times I have heard other students talk about her awesomeness. More than ten times I have heard people say she is the reason that they became a Communications major. She is one of the best professors and advisors on this campus. An invaluable member of the faculty at UofL, Mary Ashlock defines true CardSpirit. She is one professor that I will remember and be in contact with, for years to come. She has truly changed my life. * She was great!!
Ronald Atlas Biology College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Atlas was positively the best professor I have ever had. He is an expert in Microbiology, is humorous, teaches excellently, and cares for his students. I wish I could take him every semester.
Mark Austin Sociology College of Arts and Sciences He has inspired me to take on sociology as a double major. * Dr. Austin is a wonderful professor. He is interesting, makes his lectures fun and relatable, and takes the time to answer any and all questions, no matter how far-fetched they may be. Overall, he's one of the best professors that I have had at the University of Louisville.
Brian Barnes Philosophy College of Arts and Sciences Brian Barnes has by far been one of the best instructors that I have ever had. It was clear from day one that his motivation for being there was nothing less than to genuinely engage us, challenge us, and facilitate ways for us to grow as critical thinkers. He did so by providing a safe classroom atmosphere where we could all openly dialogue about numerous topics. We especially felt safe in the class because Barnes was less concerned with the "product," but rather the "process." We were challenged to agree or disagree articulately and with much respect for our peers. I think everyone should have him as an instructor and take his Critical Thinking course!
Ashly Bender English College of Arts and Sciences Had her for English 105. Fantastic.
Csaba Biró
Mathematics College of Arts and Sciences He was interesting, funny, and a good person overall whom I learned a lot from this semester. He brought things to the class that other professors are unable to do.
Mark Blum History College of Arts and Sciences Fascinating teacher with a lecture method that ensures a full understanding of the subject material. Has a true passion for what he is saying that few teachers are able to come close to achieving. * Because Dr. Blum gave me very conscientious advice and guidance throughout the semester, I now have a clear idea of how to organize my dissertation. Dr. Blum taught us how to be "professional" in an academic world.
Brad Bowman History College of Arts and Sciences An amazing professor, took all of his classes and wish he would teach more! * This professor is an amazing teacher and friend. He gives you the feeling that the world is at your fingertips. Going back in time is anything but a bore in his class. I recommend any student to take any of his classes, because he is so passionate about what he teaches and can get his students hyped about practically anything.
Lucie Brooks Women's and Gender Studies College of Arts and Sciences Prof. Brooks took a subject so broad as 'Motherhood & Law' and was able to provide enough creative ways for our class to fully gain an understanding of the subject matter. She was very understanding of the structure of her course and how it worked alongside her students. * Professor Brooks is an outstanding, patient, and helpful instructor. Not only does she bring a bevy of applicable personal experience to the class but also a unique perspective to addressing social justice issues.
Nefertiti Burton Theatre Arts College of Arts and Sciences She relates every topic with real-life experience. * She was a great instructor. Her class was original and fun. * Prof Burton goes beyond the call of duty to help her students achieve success beyond the classroom. She is creative, encouraging, and embraces her students' individuality. She pours guidance and wisdom into us. She is a teacher I aspire to someday be.
William Cahaney Urban and Public Affairs College of Arts and Sciences An enthusiastic teacher and a very friendly professor.
Anne Caldwell Political Science College of Arts and Sciences She really cares about her students' futures. She inspired me to work on publishing a paper, and this experience has led to my research interests. I will always be grateful for the help she gave to me.
Melody Carriere Classical and Modern Languages College of Arts and Sciences Most inspiring and complimentary professor of my college experience. She invokes a feeling of interest in intellect in every student she teaches.
Cara Cashon Psychological & Brain Sciences College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Cashon is every encouraging and thoughtful. I learned a lot from her class.
Karen Chandler English College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Chandler knows her topic, has excellent timing in the classroom, encourages and considers everyone's input, and shares her knowledge easily and generously. Her critical comments are thoughtful and very helpful and her concern for each student shows. I feel so grateful to have been in her intellectual and personal space.
Julia Chariker Psychological & Brain Sciences College of Arts and Sciences Taking Cognitive Processes with Dr. Chariker was a truly rewarding experience. She is very knowledgeable in the subject matter and has a real gift and passion for sharing that knowledge with her students.
Warren Chellman Mathematics College of Arts and Sciences This professor was simply amazing. He broke down the concepts of college algebra to a level where anyone could understand it. I loved how after class he would stay and allow us to ask him questions about the homework or anything concerning the class.
Karen Christopher Women's and Gender Studies College of Arts and Sciences Though I know research is at the heart of graduate education, I was still not excited to take my first research methods class because I was convinced that it would be a really dry topic. However, Dr. Christopher took this difficult topic and made it exciting. I am not only looking forward to completing my own research in the future, I now feel prepared to do so. Most importantly, I am prepared to do research through a gender-aware lens. Thank you, Dr. Christopher!
Dewey Clayton Political Science College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Dewey Clayton has been more than a professor to me at the University of Louisville. He has been a role model, a mentor, and one of my biggest supporters. In the classroom, Dr. Clayton is very passionate about what he teaches and truly likes to share his knowledge and see his students learn and grow. Outside of the classroom, Dr. Clayton is more than willing to help his students with future endeavors. For me personally, he has written countless recommendations, has given many words of encouragement, and has even served as my thesis advisor this year. Above all, Dr. Clayton enjoys seeing his students succeed and seeing they get rewards for their hard work. He has nominated me for awards, unbeknownst to me, at times that have helped me tremendously in my undergraduate career. Lastly, one of the most endearing things about Dr. Clayton is how he brags on his students. I would liken him to a proud parent. Dr. Clayton has had a large impact on my life here at the University of Louisville, and it is my pleasure to finally have a chance to brag about my professor for a change.
Gary Cobbs Biology College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Cobbs teaches one of the more difficult biology classes and does it with excellence!
Andrew Cooper Humanities College of Arts and Sciences For his first time teaching here at UofL, he was very enthusiastic and did a great job engaging his students.
Cynthia Corbitt Biology College of Arts and Sciences She is a wonderful teacher and mentor, and I am glad I got the opportunity to be in her class.
Fabian Crespo Anthropology College of Arts and Sciences Made an extremely boring class and subject matter interesting through his teaching style and sense of humor. * Dr. Crespo is the best of the best. I have taken multiple classes with him during my time at UL and have had the privilege of working closely with him outside of class. He is the most caring instructor at UL and really wants to help students achieve their dreams.
John Cumbler History College of Arts and Sciences Excellent lecturer and has the best interests of students first.
Matthieu Dalle Classical and Modern Languages College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Dalle is the hardest professor I've ever had. He is also the best. No one makes you feel like you've earned your grade more than him. He is brilliant and kind and wonderful. But he's not a bunny professor, which makes his classes doubly rewarding. He teaches HARD classes. A "B+" from him is like seeing the clouds part and angels singing, and he makes it worth it, because he really teaches you something. You want to earn a "B+" that means something rather than an "A" that doesn't. He is wonderful and is definitely my faculty fave. * He is amazing. Difficult, yes, but if you want to learn, he's the man you need.
Udayan Darji Mathematics College of Arts and Sciences He is good and a smart math instructor, and I like that.
Randall Dills History College of Arts and Sciences I have withdrawn from History 102 once, received an "F" once, and this is my 3rd try to pass Hist 102. Professor Dills explains the larger connections between events and how one thing connects to the other. In previous classes I was expected to memorize names and dates, but with Professor Dills, he wants us to understand the connections between people and events and how one things influenced another. Although his tests and assignments are difficult, he is testing our actual understanding of the information rather than our ability to memorize facts. He takes a personal interest in our learning and always takes the time to re-explain a concept if we do not understand. He takes a personal interest in our well-being. He asks about my husband, who is currently serving in Afghanistan, and is concerned if I miss class for any reason. He is a very kind, understanding, and funny professor. He takes an active role in our learning, making the class interactive rather than just a lecture. When he knows that the material we have to learn that day will not be the most interesting, he breaks up the boring parts with interesting and relevant activities and makes us laugh so that we are ready to get back to the material.
Margaret D'Silva Communication College of Arts and Sciences Dr. D'Silva was one of the best professors I have had throughout my time at UofL. She is one of the professors that truly cares about her students and wants them to succeed. I would love to take her for more classes. * Dr. Margaret has been very congenial in her manner and has been both very helpful and very encouraging with her comments on my work : ) * She was ABSOLUTELY wonderful!! Always on time, I wish she taught more classes. I took COMM 327-50 and she was very organized and fun. * As an older student returning to school, I was apprehensive about taking an online class. Margaret D'Silva creates a personal and community-based online class. She gave incredible feedback to my assignments as well as encouragement. Her class was challenging but fascinating. She kept the assignments fresh and informative. My experience in her class has offered me a better college experience as an online student than I ever received in the classroom. Margaret D'Silva's class assured me that returning to school was the best decision I've made in a long time. She's fantastic!
Sarah Emery Biology College of Arts and Sciences Sarah Emery is nominated for the use of diverse teaching and testing strategies in her ecology class.
Jasmine Farrier Political Science College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Farrier is a remarkable professor. She is extremely intelligent and that is reflected in her lectures. I looked forward to each lecture because they were highly informative, and I always seemed to learn something new. She teaches you how to look at a topic in new ways and draw concepts that are very thought provoking. She challenges students to think critically about the subject. She is also willing to help you in any way possible with the course. This was my first semester here at UofL and she really helped me, not only with her class, but she also helped me get acclimated to the university. She was welcoming to me at a time when I very much needed someone to be. She truly made a difference for me and was an important part of why I went on to have a successful first semester. I will always be incredibly grateful to her for all that she has done for me. * Prof. Farrier is amazing. She is very considerate about her students and tries to help them. I have learned from her class about the government, more than in any other class. She knows how to get her students interested and gives interesting topics. Amazing! * Brilliant professor who understands the material and genuinely loves her job. * Wonderful professor. She really cares about her students.
Ronald Fell Biology College of Arts and Sciences Of all the outstanding professors I've had at U of L, Professor Fell is on the very short list of my favorites. He is able to capture your attention and not let it go, despite speaking about complicated and daunting subjects.
Sean Fenty English College of Arts and Sciences He was an amazing teacher who really cared about his students. He worked hard to give us feedback on our papers and was always willing to help us through the class. He deserves the award.
John Ferrè Communication College of Arts and Sciences Made me want to come to class.
Matthew Fischer Classical and Modern Languages College of Arts and Sciences Easily the most likable and helpful instructor I've ever had. Really awesome professor. * Outstanding teaching methods.
Price Foster Justice Administration College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Foster is a wonderful professor and man. He loves what he does and he loves his students. I have had a lot of trials in my many years at U of L, and I have always been able to depend on him.
Michael Fowler Political Science College of Arts and Sciences Extremely knowledgeable. He has transformed the way I write papers to ensure that they are effective and that there is "no fluff" to ensure every sentence holds meaning.
Christopher Fulton Fine Arts College of Arts and Sciences Chris is not only a professor, he is also my advisor. He has, from 2004 up to the present, been a cheerleader, a big help, and a mentor to me intellectually and spiritually during rough times.
Jason Gainous Political Science College of Arts and Sciences He was a great professor. * Dr. Gainous is the most accessible, most friendly, most dedicated, most impartial, and most straightforward professor I have ever had. He exemplifies academic excellence in both his teaching and research and inspires excellence in others along the way. He is as dedicated to teaching in the classroom as he is outside the classroom, encouraging his students in class but also encouraging involvement in conferences, internships, and other opportunities. His door is always open to help with any of these class/extracurricular activities. Dr. Gainous' passion and enthusiasm betters every student around him and has encouraged several students to further their academic careers toward doctoral degrees and teaching.
Clare Gervasi Classical and Modern Languages College of Arts and Sciences Professor Gervasi is one of the best teachers I've encountered during my time at UofL. She makes learning Spanish fun and interesting. She truly cares about her students and wants to see them succeed.
Ryan Gill Mathematics College of Arts and Sciences Prof. Ryan Gill is very down-to-earth, kind, understanding, and helpful. If you need help, he will reach you and help you. Almost all of the professors in the Math Department are awesome. I happened to work very closely with Prof. Ryan Gill, so I would like to nominate him.
Michael Grillo Political Science College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Grillo is an awesome teacher!
Mike Hagan Humanities College of Arts and Sciences Probably my favorite out of any teacher or professor I've ever had. I'm already working more of his classes into my schedule, even though they don't count toward my majors, just because I love him and his style of teaching so much. If he had taught my first college chemistry class, I'd still be a chemistry major.
Carol Hanchette Geography and Geosciences College of Arts and Sciences GEOG 300: Dr. Hanchette's lectures are well organized and articulate -- verbally and via use of additional media. She is a skilled facilitator of "open classroom" learning and debate. Dr. Hanchette creates assignments that demand understanding of course material and emphasize critical thinking. * Her elective course in GIS was absolutely the best I have participated in for a long while. She obviously has a great deal of expertise. My classmates and I greatly benefited from her ability to cross the line between the two disciplines (geography and public health) to teach in a way that made us feel very confident--confident in our abilities to produce professional grade information. * This woman works very hard and appreciates and requests hard work from her students. She's a top-notch professor and educator, which is why I would like to nominate her as a favorite professor of the year. * I took Dr. Hanchette's GIS for Public Health course as a second year graduate student in the MPH program. It was my favorite course of the semester and one of my favorite courses of all time! I learned so much, and I feel the skills gained from the course have immense utility and are highly marketable. Dr. Hanchette was so knowledgeable and informative. I am very grateful to her for giving MPH students the opportunity to learn such valuable and practical skills involving GIS, and showing us how useful GIS is in relation to public health and epidemiology. * Great professor, really cares about students' education. I cannot say enough about her teaching abilities, her personal warmth, and her genuine and encouraging love for her work.
Zijiang He Psychological & Brain Sciences College of Arts and Sciences Dr. He helped lead all students in the class to answer their own questions instead of simply giving the answer outright. I have not seen a teacher use this technique in a long time--it helps so much with critical thinking skills. Dr. He also encouraged students to ask hard questions during presentations. This was great practice for both the presenter and the rest of the class who had to think of analytical questions to ask.
Maura Hencker Classical and Modern Languages College of Arts and Sciences Maura is an awesome teacher...she challenges the students and makes us work hard, and I appreciate that about her. Debra Journet English College of Arts and Sciences This past December, my mother was diagnosed with a terminal brain cancer--glioblastoma. Sadly, she died only three months later in February 2012. This has been, at times, an overwhelming situation for me. But throughout it all, Dr. Debra Journet has been a wonderful friend. Having lost her own mother to the same disease, she provided profound empathy and help, allowing me to make it through this difficult year--which is my third as a Ph.D. student. I have been and am blessed to have her as my dissertation director and as my friend.

Rebecca Ledford Academic Advising Center College of Arts and Sciences She was wonderful in class and has continued to be excellent as an advisor. She knows her students well and her department too. Everything I've had issues with she's been there to help me with them. If she can't help students with a problem, she doesn't waste their time. Instead she sends them on to the correct place. Other instructors should take a lesson from her. She will go far in her career and will help students reach their fullest potential. I'll be sad to graduate because she won't be my advisor anymore! I hope other students are as lucky as I am and can have her for an instructor and advisor.
Craig Lemak Classical and Modern Languages College of Arts and Sciences I have never had an instructor that cared about his students the way he has. He is understanding and easy to talk to. We are all sad to see him move away, because our whole class planned to take him again in the Spring semester in ASL102. He deserves this award! * Great teacher. I learned, he is fun and enthusiastic, fair.

Jennifer Mansfield-Jones Biology College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Mansfield-Jones taught in conjunction with five other professors for this semester's section of BIOL 244, and I must say that she truly shined as an instructor. I looked forward to her lectures because she always had such a zeal for teaching and for answering questions from her students. Overall, she is an excellent educator and a truly kind and genuine person!

The classes have been very eye opening and enjoyable. His knowledge of the material, in addition to its dissemination, is very effective. Ralph Merkel Communication College of Arts and Sciences I would like to nominate Ralph Merkel as my favorite professor. I have had plenty of professors during my time at the University of Louisville, but none of them can compare to Professor Merkel. He is not only very knowledgeable in what he teaches but he goes above and beyond for his students. He is one of a limited amount of professors that is always readily available whenever he is needed. He is funny, encouraging, smart, and overall a wonderful educator. Since I have had his classes, I have recommended him to every student I can. I look forward to his classes in the future, and I know that if ever I need advice or assistance, he will always be available. It is because of this that I say thank you and nominate him as the best professor of Fall 2011. * Professor Merkel has been more than a teacher, he has been a mentor. My first class with him was in Spring 2011 and that was the first time I saw his passion for teaching students. That summer I got the opportunity to intern with him and learn more about the film industry. Without him, I would not be half the communication major I am today. He has taught me and other students a lot of very valuable information even beyond the classroom. Professor Merkel is truly devoted to helping students succeed. Since he knew I had a passion for film, he learned about an opportunity to make a Public Service Announcement for Howard University. Not only did I learn a great deal from this experience but I got paid and it would not have been possible without Professor Merkel. It is with great honor that I nominate Professor Merkel for the 2012 Faculty Favorites awards! * Prof. Merkel always shows great enthusiasm in class. He's also always willing to help anyone and takes time to explain details to each student.
Sarah Miller Communication College of Arts and Sciences Sarah is an AWESOME instructor. I put off Comm 111 until my senior year dreading the day that I would have to take it, but from the first day of class, Sarah made the subject matter interesting, the class enjoyable, and my day a little brighter at 11 am every Tuesday and Thursday. She has a thorough knowledge of her subject matter and is very approachable and easy to talk to as well as learn from. I NEVER thought I would enjoy a class as much as I have enjoyed her class. Anyone who can take my anxiety with public speaking and turn it into something I looked forward to doing--KUDOS to Sarah Miller. She is a gem.
Gilbert Mitchell Pathways--Math College of Arts and Sciences Mr. Mitchell went above and beyond to make sure his class MT-80 understood the material and actually learned it in a manner that would allow them to achieve success; and still managed to make math entertaining and fun. His great knowledge of math made it easier for us to understand math, and the fact that it was his true goal to teach us so that we could succeed in the class means more than anything. Thank you Mr. Mitchell! I wish I could have you for Math 109.
Hunter Moseley Chemistry College of Arts and Sciences He encourages students to think critically, not just recite information.

Mark Noble Chemistry College of Arts and Sciences The best professor I have had at UofL thus far. Dr. Noble is extraordinary at explaining the challenging concepts of chemistry in a manner that is readily understandable and applicable, even to students who are new to chemistry. He always takes time for questions and plans his lectures so that he spends more time on more difficult concepts. In the process, Dr. Noble makes chemistry enjoyable and entertaining through real-world chemical applications and small experiments or visual aids in class. I have nothing but praise to give to Dr. Noble, and I appreciate his diligent work and care for his students. As such, I nominate Dr. Mark Noble for the Fall 2011 Faculty Favorite Award. * Mark Noble has found an interactive way to teach chemistry, bringing together the world we live in and the science behind it. He is one of the most patient language teachers I have ever met and is always willing to help his students all he can. Moshe has been an outstanding professor, and I would not have learned Hebrew as well as I have without him as a teacher. He is a true asset to the university. * Moshe has a gift for teaching. His methods make learning Hebrew accessible and his knowledge about so many other things helps the class to better wrap our heads around the subject matter. * Moshe is by far the best professor that I have ever had. I can say, without a single doubt, that having him as a professor for Hebrew has been the defining reason that I have enjoyed my time at UofL. The passion with which he teaches is infectious, and his style is personal but, at the same time, incredibly intense. Despite the fact that our class only has a few students, Moshe continues without fail to inspire, lead, and teach us all. I know that I am not alone when I say that it is because of how he teaches that I continued with such fervour and vehemence with this difficult language. Moshe deserves an immense amount of recognition for all the hard work that he has put in for us, and I feel that this is just a small portion of what I could give back. * The University of Louisville is fortunate to have a faculty member as intelligent, genuine, encouraging, and inspiring as Moshe Ohayon. * Moshe is a phenomenal instructor with a true gift of teaching. I've sat under many professors that are brilliant in their field but are lacking in teaching skills. Moshe brings passion, humor, knowledge and direction to the classroom that makes his classroom a fun place to learn. UofL is lucky to have Moshe, and he should not only be recognized, the University should beg him to stay on as a Hebrew professor. I wouldn't say his Hebrew class was easy nor that he didn't hold us to a high standard. It was a tough class, but (as I emailed him during the semester), his class was a joy, and I looked forward to coming three times a week. Please honor this man for his unique abilities, his passions, and high standards!

He really cares about statistics and makes it interesting. Many students in his class aren't mathematically talented or couldn't really grasp a hold of statistics, but Dr. Shafto makes the class fun and educational. I have learned more in this class than I have in most of my classes because he puts the emphasis on the important things, teaches what he knows, and as the expert he is on Psychological Statistics; not to mention, he gives the class a quiz before moving into each lecture. This just helps improve retention of material and helps the class do better on the tests.

Samantha exemplifies what a TA should be at the University of Louisville.
Richard Tewksbury Justice Administration College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Tewksbury has gone well above and beyond the normal duties of a professor to help me achieve academically and professionally. I have accepted a full scholarship to attend the University of South Carolina to earn my Ph.D. in Criminology starting in the fall of 2012 and have received offers from several other schools as well. I would not have been in a position to make such a decision without his willingness to work with me on publications and class assignments, which helped me maintain a strong academic record. Dr. Tewksbury also encouraged me to present my research at academic conferences, which has strengthened my resume and academic network. He is a truly exceptional and selfless mentor. * Dr. Tewksbury has helped me tremendously throughout my M.S. in Justice Administration, serving as the teacher for most of my classes. Dr. Thomas is a hard worker. I know that she even created a master's program about theatre in all African diaspora. She is a great leader in the African-American Theatre Program. He expected nothing less than our very best and pushed each student to give it. Though he did not run the subject into the ground, he made the class attendable though it was not mandatory. This man is a wonderful professor and person. He deserves to receive the Faculty Favorite Award because of all this and more.

He cares about his students, and his concern for them goes beyond just the teaching of facts in the classroom. His class on historic preservation has relevance in the real world. He has spoken numerous times on jobs in public history which lets us know that he cares about what happens to us after we leave his class and U of L. He respects his students and, personally, I think overall he has been the best teacher I have ever had the honor of learning from.
Julie Wade Humanities College of Arts and Sciences Julie deserves this award for her enthusiasm and efforts in helping students acknowledge importance in sex roles and diversity. * I took Julie's class in the fall, but it was one of the most amazing classes I've ever had the privilege of being a part of. Bronwyn Williams English College of Arts and Sciences Bronwyn is a great teacher and a great Writing Center director. The class is both interesting and extremely valuable in the long run.
Mark Williams English College of Arts and Sciences Mark is an amazing teacher. Not only did he teach me writing skills, which is what was intended for the class, but he taught me a lot that I will carry with me through college. When I returned to school after 16 years, I was terrified and not real sure that I could do it. He was always so encouraging, not only to myself, but to everyone in the class. He never made us feel like we were wrong necessarily, but he would always tell us what would better work for a piece of writing or idea. Always on our major writing assignments he offered guidance. He never set us up for failure. I could email him anytime if I was having trouble with something and he would get right back to me, despite the fact that I'm sure he was incredibly busy with his own school life. He didn't just teach me how to write, but he taught me so much more. I can't say enough about him...I was very lucky to find myself in his class!
Michael Williams Humanities College of Arts and Sciences I would like to thank Professor Williams for restoring my long-lost love of reading and writing. I have been challenged yet not brutally overwhelmed by his classes, a delicate balance that is not easy to find. The man is a veritable wealth of knowledge, and I'm grateful for his amazing ability to engage all types of students, entertain various opinions/hypotheses, and still ensure that everything is handled in a fair and respectful manner. In short, one of the best around. * This professor, patient and kind, produced such an engaging class environment. I learned so much and felt he was always receptive to what his students had to say.
Joanna Wolfe English College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Wolfe is a great teacher in many ways, but I nominate her for one specific reason. As a dissertation director, she is probably the most efficient as well as most dedicated professor in the university. Here is why I make that admittedly big claim. Dr. Wolfe gives her students specific, doable tasks, asking them to submit the tasks a day before the next meeting (which is scheduled at the current meeting). She also has groups, which she (and her students) humorously refer to as a "wolfepack," and working in a group is phenomenally helpful. Members read one another's drafts and bring comments to the (usually) weekly meetings. Dr. Wolfe starts group meeting by asking students to share their reactions to their peer's work. Then she provides her own comments, letting students explain his/her argument and also brainstorming for the next step during the discussion. While I would admit that such an approach could potentially mean too much management of the student's work by the mentor, the benefits far outweigh the side effects. One, considering the high ratio of ABDs to total doctoral student attrition in the US (which is more than 50%), this approach has the potential of preventing even the most severe case of should-I-stay-or-should-I-go ABDs working and making progress, one week at a time, five pages at a time. Two, members of the group can share ideas and help each other, not just intellectually but also socially and emotionally. In fact, three, Dr. Wolfe even acknowledges that her students may be able to vent their frustration of the dissertation process with their peers, which even the most stolid person is likely to do at one point or another in the course of writing a dissertation. Finally, I think that while weekly meetings could seem a little too much engineering for students and faculty in the engineering (and I know that this approach is common in disciplines like engineering), my experience has been that the opportunity to move one small step at a time, week by week, is more beneficial than any other approach I can imagine. Incidentally, Dr. Wolfe is the author of Team Writing, a book that illustrates how teachers can make one of the most theoretically liked and practically disliked teaching tool: collaborative projects/writing.
Jared Wood Biology College of Arts and Sciences Natural Sciences are not my best subjects, and I was dreading taking the Biology 104 lab. I cannot explain to you how much of a difference it was having Mr. Wood as my instructor for the class. He was always willing to answer my questions and take the time to help me understand the material. He made it possible for me to actually enjoy a class that I knew I was going to struggle with.
Ming Yu Physics and Astronomy College of Arts and Sciences It has been a plus for me doing Quantum Mechanics with Dr. Yu. She has a good approach of giving out the material and challenges the students through her assignments and tests for evaluations.
Robert Barker Computer Information Systems College of Business Excellent instructor for CIS 410. Really prepares you for the real world and challenges you all semester.
Michael Barone Marketing College of Business Incredible professor who goes above and beyond to pass on lessons to the students.
Reginald Bruce Management College of Business Awesome teacher, probably my favorite. * Great instructor who blended the class together with excellent real-life examples, while showing an interest in everyone's future career and personal life. * Best teacher ever...seriously! * Dr. Bruce was great at interacting with the students. It was a tough class, but also a lot of fun.
Christy Burge Accountancy College of Business Professor Burge is an amazing professor; she is by far one of the best professors in the College of Business. She knows the corporate world, and instills the "real life" situations in the classroom, instead of just the "academic world and its scenarios." She is willing to assist students outside of class and will try to make room in her busy schedule in case someone cannot make her office hours. She also holds study sessions outside of class upon recommendation from the students. She makes sure the students actually learn the material instead of memorizing it for that class only. * If it wasn't for Burge, I would have never known what major to select or what to do with it. She not only helped me learn but guided me for my future.
Christopher Crawford Management College of Business Professor Crawford has changed my view on the world. I believe he challenges all of his students to see management and organizational behavior in their own lives and apply it. I truly cannot describe the change he made in me. I have switched my major, ACTUALLY read an entire textbook willingly, and listened to my classmates' wildest dreams and desires in our WOW Projects. I urge you to consider Mr. Crawford for this award which he is certainly qualified.
Jose Fernandez Economics College of Business Dr. Fernandez is an incredible asset to the University.
James Fiet Entrepreneurship College of Business By far the best professor I've had. I appreciated his practical advice and encouragement. He made sense out of the college experience for me, and I wish I had had the opportunity to have him as an instructor earlier in my college career. I feel the insight he gave me would have allowed me to capitalize on the educational experience.
Barry Haworth Economics College of Business Dr. Haworth is one of the best professors I have had. He is enthusiastic about the subject he teaches and truly wants the students to learn. He is an excellent professor and is willing to go to great lengths to help students; he hosts review sessions on his own time and also will schedule office hours at almost any point in time, if a student desires his help. His manners in teaching are very effective, and students can learn a great deal from him as long as the students are committed to learning. * Best professor I had at the University of Louisville in my four years in undergrad! Great teaching style...really cares if students understand the material. * First off, I would like to say I am awful at economics but I never had such an amazing, understanding professor. He is one of those rare professors who truly cares about each and every one of his students as long as they put in effort. Professor Haworth is very helpful. It is no secret how terrible I am at economics but he is very patient and understanding. He is one of those professors you can go to and not feel uncomfortable confronting. He cracks jokes, and most importantly, he relates to us. He understands where we are in our lives and does not speak to us or treat us like we are not competent. I enjoy his class. He is a professor that I want to work and do well in his course to make him proud of me and give back in the sense of showing that all of HIS work and effort is worthwhile. If anyone deserves recognition, it is Professor Haworth.
Wayne P. Jones Marketing College of Business Great professor who is very willing to help his students succeed.
Stephen Kendra Computer Information Systems College of Business Makes class fun and super informative and cares deeply about his students. * Professor Kendra always helps me out whenever I am having a hard time, even if it isn't directly related to his class. He has made even the most complicated computer-related concepts easy to understand and has also been able to make even the most boring subject matter into an enjoyable lecture. He is willing to bend over backwards to help his students and is truly a wonderful person. He is not only the greatest professor I have had this semester, but the best that I have had in all of my time at UofL.
Warren McIntosh Computer Information Systems College of Business Very knowledgeable about the subject, excellent teacher. Has given me the tools to succeed in the business world, especially with Microsoft Excel. * Dr. McIntosh has went above and beyond as a new CIS professor at UofL. He genuinely cares about his students and the subject he teaches. He always responds promptly to student emails and comments and has real discussions with students. He presents the curriculum in an informative and interactive manner and puts on evening study sessions that last till nearly 9pm. He uses his own time to help students and help them learn and succeed. It is for these reasons that I nominate Dr. Warren McIntosh.
Robert Myers Management College of Business He's an awesome professor with real-life experience. * Throughout the course, he always made class meetings an enjoyable experience. He always had a good, relevant story to share, and it helped the learning process greatly.
Elaine Robinson Management College of Business Elaine Robinson is one of the best professors I have ever had. She is passionate, helpful, and knowledgeable about leadership and effectiveness in the professional world. The way she integrated her personal experience into the class lessons was exceptional. Her wide array of business articles that she has collected over the years is second to none when it comes to teamwork and management. Her connections in the community allowed us to meet extremely knowledgeable and successful business executives and career developers. She took the time to meet with her students individually and genuinely cared about our input in discussions. It's clear that she maintains great relationships with her classmates even after the semester. She was a fresh alternative to some of my other professors who have always been in academia. I am more than confident that I am more employable and promotable thanks to her mentorship. She is exactly the type of professor we need at UofL, if we want to continue to prepare our students for the skills needed in the real world. We are lucky to have someone of her caliber at our University.
Matt Thatcher Computer Information Systems College of Business I was dreading taking the CIS 300 class because I thought it would be a bunch of computer stuff, but Professor Thatcher not only made it easy to learn, but fun as well. I really enjoyed taking his class, and will recommend him to everyone who needs to take a CIS class.
Michael Waterman Management College of Business Awesome professor. You can really tell he cares about the students!
Richard Wilcke Equine Industry Program College of Business His class was always interesting, and I actually couldn't wait to come back to class to see what we learned next!
Andrew Wright Computer Information Systems College of Business Dr. Wright is the best professor (or teacher in general) that I have had my entire life. This semester was my second class with him, and in the Spring I'll be having my third. He's humorous, charismatic, and great and stays focused on the task at hand--all at the same time. I can confidently say that CIS 200 will be my favorite class next semester, just like 199 was this semester. * Great professor who goes above and beyond. Also helps students with other classes they have if he can.
Sharon Kerrick Entrepreneurship/Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Business/College of Education and Human Development Always wants to see her students succeed and won't let them rest until they provide their best efforts. One of the most influential people I have interacted with while at U of L. She is also instrumental in helping in the development and implementation of the newly organized Entrepreneurship Club.
Jill Adelson Educational and Counseling Psychology, Counseling, and College Student Personnel College of Education and Human Development Dr. Adelson achieves a perfect balance of rigor and fairness. She offers differentiated instruction and multiple opportunities for practice and review, but also holds students to a high standard of performance. She teaches subjects that are often intimidating to students, but she makes the material accessible, interesting, and fun. * I thought that Jill Adelson was an excellent teacher. She has an upbeat personality and a positive outlook. She made learning both interesting and fun, while providing a variety of ways for students to acquire knowledge. I hope to have her as a teacher again in the future and think she deserves to be recognized for her outstanding abilities as an instructor and her great efforts aimed at helping her students succeed. * She has everything of a great instructor.
Cathy Avdevich Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development Cathy is concerned about students learning. * Always willing to go the extra mile to help students!
Nina Beck Early Childhood and Elementary Education College of Education and Human Development I wish she could teach all of my classes!!!
Adrienne Bratcher Health and Sport Sciences College of Education and Human Development Best instructor ever!!!!
Latricia Bronger Middle and Secondary Education College of Education and Human Development She is the only professor I know that will stay up late making sure her students' needs are met. She has been resourceful, both academically and emotionally, since I applied to the College of Education, even when I haven't been enrolled in a class of hers. She is the greatest!
Sherri Brown Early Childhood and Elementary Education College of Education and Human Development Excellent, practical, informative.
Roger Buskill Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development I think Roger gave the right amount of support and quality assignments to teach this class. I learned a lot and enjoyed his style of teaching. * Roger is a fantastic instructor who cares about his students and has the ability to connect, even in an online course. He is articulate and very detailed in laying out his plans, and I really like the way each assignment builds on the next so that at the end of the course there is not a massive amount of work, provided you've kept up all along. I really like Roger's style, and he is very approachable as well.
Namok Choi Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development As a doctoral candidate and a true distance student (I live in Cincinnati), Dr. Choi has gone above and beyond the call of postsecondary faculty. My first on-campus class was her Stats 601 in the summer of 2008, and she has been a constant source of support since then. As I begin my dissertation work, she will be my Committee Chair and my guide through the process. I owe her so much more than just a simple thank you. She has inspired me to be a better postsecondary faculty member and definitely challenged me to go the distance! She is a true asset to UofL. * Instructor's personality is very uplifting and pleasing for an evening course. Her sense of humor keeps students engaged and her sense of liveliness is admired!
Donna Cundiff Special Education College of Education and Human Development Donna was a superb instructor for EDSP 623 Foundations in Orientation and Mobility for Preschoolers with Multiple Impairment. She was very helpful and her knowledge of the course content was amazing. I had no previous experience with Orientation and Mobility concepts. I feel my knowledge base and my ability to work with young children with visual impairments has improved as a result of taking this class.
Nancy Cunningham Educational and Counseling Psychology, Counseling, and College Student Personnel College of Education and Human Development I cannot express into words how much I have enjoyed being in her classes. Dr. Cunningham always finds a way to make her topics interesting. She always has creative ideas and examples from real-life scenarios. She listens to her students and provides us with encouragement. There are several times where I wanted to just give up, but after talking to Dr. Cunningham, I became reassured about my future. She has served as a mentor, academic advisor, and role model for me. * Dr. Cunningham is an incredible person, advisor, teacher, and supervisor. She deserves this award 100%. * Dr. Cunningham has been an amazing professor. She is very knowledgeable and goes above and beyond. I have enjoyed and learned a great deal from her. * She engages students through her knowledge of the professional counseling field and ease in communicating the material. * Dr. Cunningham has been supportive of me personally throughout my time in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program. She has provided me with opportunities to conduct research, written letters so that I can continue my education, and advocated for me. I am grateful for all that she has done for me, personally and professionally. * Dr. Cunningham takes an interest in her students' progress and success that goes well beyond what is necessary or expected. She makes herself readily available to students for mentoring and to discuss course work, even when she is particularly busy. She has been spearheading the self-study in the department that is required to achieve CACREP certification, an effort that requires much time and energy above and beyond her duties and which will benefit both the university and the students who will graduate from an accredited program. Dr. Cunningham cares deeply about the welfare of her students, the subjects she teaches, the counseling profession, and social justice. This caring attitude is evident in all of my experiences with Dr. Cunningham, in the classroom and when being advised about moving through the program. I entered the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program with the intent of stopping with my MEd, but Dr. Cunningham encouraged me to apply to the doctoral program, which I am beginning in the fall. Her advice, encouragement, and nurturing have been instrumental to my growth as a student. I cannot imagine moving through the program without her. I wholeheartedly recommend her for this award.
Michael Cuyjet Educational and Counseling Psychology, Counseling, and College Student Personnel College of Education and Human Development Dr. Cuyjet moves beyond the textbook and lectures to create an authentic learning environment that promotes understanding and growth. * I have been privileged to be in a number of Dr. Cuyjet's courses over the past three years, but this semester I had the opportunity for a unique experience in one of his classes. The Student Services in the Caribbean course he teaches not only exposed me to tertiary education in the Caribbean, but it was a part of the International Service Learning Program at UofL. Dr. Cuyjet put forth great effort and time in working with his counterparts in Trinidad to arrange for our symposium on social responsibility to happen. The symposium allowed the students to present with and learn from professionals and students in Trinidad. This experience is one I could not have been afforded without Dr. Cuyjet's diligence and guidance. He strives to give his students important learning experiences in all of his courses, but this course and trip showed exceptional service and dedication to his teaching and helping students. Through his teaching and leadership on this trip, I have memories and experiences that have impacted my education, career, and personal life I will never forget. For his significant impact on my learning, I am extremely thankful. * When I was still in undergrad and considering this program, I contacted Dr. Cuyjet. He took the time to talk to me on the phone for about ten minutes and explained all of the information I asked about. During my first year in the College Student Personnel Master's Program, he has been a stimulating and challenging professor. After traveling with him to Trinidad and Tobago and seeing him successfully run and plan an international symposium, I was more impressed. Also, he was so supportive of me and helpful when I was nervous about presenting. He pushes you to challenge yourself and go outside of your comfort zone, while also managing to support you and give you the tools, confidence, and knowledge you need.
Betty Doyle Early Childhood and Elementary Education College of Education and Human Development Mrs. Betty was so laid back and treated us as fellow teachers rather than her students. She even preferred for us to call her Mrs. Betty rather than Dr. Doyle. There were never any exams or long lectures, everything was discussion based. Her wisdom from her experience as a teacher and her ability to pass on her passion for her profession was an invaluable resource to our class and for any prospective teacher.
Sherry Duffy Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development She is the best.
Eileen Estes Educational and Counseling Psychology, Counseling, and College Student Personnel College of Education and Human Development The most brave and open teacher I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. * This instructor truly wants you to succeed. She is interested in your personal, as well as your academic life. She keeps the stress and drama low in her classes, and the material she teaches is very important to your field, no busy work! Interesting classes, pertinent information, cares that students succeed, cares about class and personal issues. Open door policy, Eileen is always willing to help! Also, Eileen treats us like adults and has brought personal stories of her practice to the classroom. For that I also admire her greatly!
John Finch Middle and Secondary Education College of Education and Human Development Finch was the best professor I had at UofL for the duration of my grad program. He is an amazing man with lots of experience and encouraged me to want to keep teaching.
Donna Gaus Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development Dr. Gaus is the most helpful professor I have ever had the opportunity to learn from in my higher education experience. Although the ELFH 600 course was online, I felt as if I was in a traditional classroom setting because of her accessibility and weekly chat sessions. Dr. Gaus is encouraging and made me want to truly learn and understand the concepts of educational research.
Angela Girdley Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development This is the second class I have had with Dr. Girdley. She is a wonderful and knowledgeable instructor. I am completing my Master's degree online so communication is very important. She is responsive and extremely helpful.
Glenn Gittings Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development I had Dr. Gittings for my American College and University course this spring. He was a fantastic professor. He communicated well, taught with passion, and facilitated interesting classes. I definitely left knowing much more about the content area than before!
Kathleen Gosser Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development Dr. G. has had the most profound impact on me this fall. This was her first time as an educator at U of L; however, she has clearly established her sense of "gift" as she prepared each class for us to learn optimally, androgynously, and with integrity and consideration for each student. I honor her highly.
Jacob Gross Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development Dr. Gross is a well-prepared, enthusiastic instructor. I definitely learned a great deal in his class.
Marion Hambrick Health and Sport Sciences College of Education and Human Development I had three classes with this instructor, and he was very influential in my learning. Very laid back and did well in all of his classes. * He seemed to genuinely care about students and seemed to often go the extra mile to give students a hand in and out of the classroom.
Cheryl Hart Health and Sport Sciences College of Education and Human Development I had Dr. Hart for a class that I had thought would be boring and a drag to go to. Instead, I greatly enjoyed every class period. Her teaching style is thoroughly engaging, and I really wish she taught another course so that I could take her class again. * Makes class enjoyable and truly cares about her students! * I enjoyed the class so much! Professor Hart is very knowledgeable of sport psychology and her teaching techniques were great!
Amy Hirschy Educational and Counseling Psychology, Counseling, and College Student Personnel College of Education and Human Development Dr. Hirschy is a wonderful professor who puts her full effort into making a course relevant, understandable, and appropriately demanding. She also serves as dissertation chair for many students and is fully supportive of our efforts, providing a delicate balance of challenge and support.
Craig Hochbein Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development He is a wonderful professor. His input always helps me write better and learn from my mistakes.
Penny Howell Middle and Secondary Education College of Education and Human Development Penny is one of the most phenomenal professors I have had the delight to work with. I have been her student several times over the three years I have attended the university. She demonstrates the importance of modeling expectations, addressing differentiation in the class, and above all else, Penny is a valuable resource to the students of the Education Teacher Prep Program. She offers her help to students and future teachers beyond graduation from the University of Louisville. She is, in essence, an epic professor. * I learned so much from her and how to integrate reading/writing/literacy into a math lesson. * She genuinely enjoys teaching and this motivates her students to work hard. Dr. Howell is energetic and approachable. There are not enough positive adjectives to describe what an excellent educator Dr. Howell is. I have actually taken a course not required for my degree, just so that I could experience her teaching! * Dr. Howell has been, by far, my favorite professor during my time at the University of Louisville. It was obvious that she knew her content and was passionate about education. Even more evident is the dedication she has to her students. I never once dreaded coming to her classes (in fact, I took as many of Dr. Howell's classes as I could possibly take), and I know that other students feel the same way. Dr. Howell has a way to build each of her classes into a learning community where I felt safe and valued. We as students were able to learn collaboratively and get to know one another. Her classes were some of the only classes where I felt that the professor actually cared and knew who I was. Dr. Howell was able to build this community without sacrificing any of the content that we needed to learn and understand. Her courses were the best courses that I have experienced in my entire program as a middle/secondary education social studies major, and I am so thankful to Dr. Howell for being the best professor I have had in all four of my years. She is truly deserving of a faculty favorite award and has made a significant impact on my education.
Jill Jacobi-Vessels Early Childhood and Elementary Education College of Education and Human Development Dr. Jacobi-Vessels is an outstanding professor. She invests so much into her students to ensure that we become the best teachers possible. She gives great information, experiences, and class exercises which make learning meaningful. She puts great knowledge as well as creativity into her job. I always come to her class ready and eager to learn.
Pamela Jett Early Childhood and Elementary Education College of Education and Human Development Dr. Jett shows a great deal of caring and effort. She is very creative with her lessons and does a great job of modeling effective classroom strategies for teachers.
Kristi King Health and Sport Sciences College of Education and Human Development Dr. King is a great instructor and is very passionate about the topic she is teaching. She is also very knowledgeable about her field and makes the students want to know more. A++ * Passionate about health and wellness. Gets students involved and interested!
Elizabeth Krauss Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development Elizabeth is wonderful at explaining the assignments, as well as making sure a student has the assistance needed. She is very quick at replying to questions about course content and is just overall a very pleasant instructor to work with. * Best instructor I've ever had......hands down. * Elizabeth is one of the most pleasant people I have had the pleasure of working with. She loves what she does and it shows in the amount of time and patience she displays with her students. She is a role model when it comes to getting the most out of her students by setting the expectation and balancing the care and tough love. I was not a student ID in her class, I was a person. * Did a wonderful job and is a real asset to the university.
Stefanie Livers Early Childhood and Elementary Education College of Education and Human Development Her class was the hardest, therefore, I value my grade in it more.
Alexis Lyras Health and Sport Sciences College of Education and Human Development Dr. Lyras had a huge impact on me this entire school year. He presented new opportunities for me to better myself, and he motivated me to work harder so that I could be successful in the future. Without Dr. Lyras, I would not have had the experiences that I did, like joining the ISLP group to Trinidad. He is a great mentor. I feel as though Dr. Lyras is very underrated in his teaching abilities and perhaps misunderstood by many. I appreciate him for all he has done and he definitely deserves some kind of recognition for his efforts.
Antonette MacDonald Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development I have never had a more dedicated instructor. * Dr. MacDonald is a very good instructor that went out of her way each and every time. * I will be graduating in August of this year. I just finished a class with Dr. MacDonald. She is a wonderful instructor who takes a personal interest in the success of each and every student. She always responded to any questions regarding assignments and often went above and beyond to ensure a positive learning experience for everyone. * Her methods of inclusion in the facilitation of our instruction increased my understanding of the material and made it easy and fun to learn. I look forward to learning from her in the future!
David Mahan Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development Dr. Mahan was organized, thoughtful, responsive, and above all, genuinely interested in helping the students in his Program Evaluation class. He took the time to go above and beyond what other professors would normally provide (by way of instruction) to ensure that the class was engaging and productive for the students. Though teaching in an adjunct capacity, I believe that he encouraged learning and understanding by investing in his own learning and understanding of student projects and topics. This investment will ultimately benefit the students but seemed to come from a place of genuine care for those same students and their academic journey. * Dr. Mahan was an informative instructor and provided a safe environment to learn.
Maggie McGatha Middle and Secondary Education College of Education and Human Development Superb teacher and fascinating class.
Laura Mullaney Early Childhood and Elementary Education College of Education and Human Development I would like to nominate Laura Mullaney as my favorite educator for the Fall 2011 semester. I was in Prof. Mullaney's EDTP 603 Literacy Methods course held at Atkinson Elementary School. This course is required for my MAT program, and I was very nervous and intimidated by this course. Analyzing, developing, evaluating, and implementing literacy programs in elementary schools was a process I was intimidated by, mostly due to my lack of knowledge accompanied with NO experience. Prof. Mullaney has a skill other professors and instructors need to study. She is excited about learning and teaching. Her classroom presentations were outstanding as they always were linked with my experience in my field observation. I would go to class each week with a list of activities I observed in the real classroom, and Prof. Mullaney would elaborate on those activities and provide numerous other sources to do more research. Prof. Mullaney identified a long list of literacy activities I should be observing, and when I did observe those activities, my "lightbulb moment" was awesome! Prof. Mullaney would foster my "lightbulb moment" by challenging me to go beyond my experience. She challenged me to conduct my own research and learn more about literacy topics. In my opinion, a great educator, especially at the University level, generates curiosity and guides that curiosity in a way to create increased knowledge. Prof. Mullaney not only created curiosity, she took the time to guide the entire class's learning in a way which eventually developed strong literacy educators. Due to Prof. Mullaney's class, I not only feel confident about teaching literacy at any grade level, but I feel competent about the literacy program I will develop in my classroom. Thank you Prof. Mullaney!
Jesse Owen Educational and Counseling Psychology, Counseling, and College Student Personnel College of Education and Human Development Wonderful instruction--great textbook selection, classroom examples/role plays, and simulated practice.
Robert Pennington Special Education College of Education and Human Development Dr. Pennington is a very caring instructor who truly wants his students to learn. He has a passion for what he does. He always seems to find time to assist his students when they need help. I really appreciate it. * Well organized, informative, engaging, and cares about his students. * I learned so much from his class.
Susan Peters Middle and Secondary Education College of Education and Human Development Dr. Peters is the best.
Joseph Petrosko Leadership, Foundations and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development Dr. Petrosko literally changed my course in the Ph.D. program. I came into the Ph.D. program in another department thinking I was a qualitative researcher and discovered a new love for statistics. Dr. Petrosko's enthusiasm and educational acumen opened a new world that I thought was impossible to understand. His patience as well as his way of explaining complicated material in a way that makes sense is his strength. He is passionate about the subject matter and really explains the application of the material. His courses have truly been a joy and I have grown as a doctoral student because of Dr. Petrosko.
Daya Sandhu Educational and Counseling Psychology, Counseling, and College Student Personnel College of Education and Human Development Dr. Sandhu is an amazing teacher and leader. She is a fantastic teacher, and I wish I had classes with her every semester! * Dr. Sheffield is a highly organized yet entertaining instructor. Her assignments were created with thought and careful observation.
Melissa Shirley Middle and Secondary Education College of Education and Human Development I like the way Dr. Shirley teaches; she has a lot of prior experience teaching students at different grade levels. She shares that knowledge with her graduate students which helps us prepare for the "real" classroom environment.
Brad Shuck Leadership, Foundation, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development Dr. Shuck inspires his students to be the best professionals and best people that they can be. His class challenged me not only to develop my own skills but to make my community and organization better for everyone involved. He is a very positive and generous instructor and mentor, and I gained tremendously by working with him. * Great instructor; knowledgeable, and facilitates learning without anxiety and uses creative methods to illustrate concepts. * Dr. Shuck is the most engaging and committed professor I've ever experienced. His commitment to student understanding of course content is exemplified in his lessons as well as in his correspondence with students outside of the classroom. Dr. Shuck is very knowledgeable and has much experience in the subjects in which he teaches. He is an inspirational teacher that challenges me while simultaneously providing support. I am currently taking my third class facilitated by Dr. Shuck. * I have had Dr. Shuck for three different courses over the duration of the last two years. He has made a huge contribution to my learning. His teaching methods of using visuals, group activities, and class discussions have allowed me to fully grasp the content of the class. I have been able to relate what I have learned in his courses to my professional and personal life. * Dr. Shuck is an inspiring professor, a subject matter expert in his field, and a wonderful compassionate person. * Dr. Shuck is incredible! The way he related with students and the manner in which he ties the course material to real-life applications is the best I have seen in my educational career. He is to be commended and recognized for his outstanding approach and manner of instruction. * Brad was one of the first teachers I had upon entering the Workforce Leadership Program. His excitement and enthusiasm for the program, his class, and our education was contagious. I was so motivated to continue with my education at UL. If every teacher was like Brad Shuck, UL would be unstoppable! * Dr. Shuck brings a positive attitude to every class and truly engages the student mind. I feel that Dr. Shuck truly loves being an instructor, and there is almost nowhere else he would rather be than in the classroom with his students. As an instructor, he goes above and beyond by using various instructional methods that encourage students to engage in critical thinking, group interactions, reflective analysis, and real-world application of concepts. I feel the skills I have learned and refined in Dr. Shuck's classroom will benefit me in all my future academic and professional endeavors to come. Kristin Wilson Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education College of Education and Human Development Kristin took time out of her busy schedule to meet with me on a variety of times for discussions re: class material and to assist me with topics that I may have found challenging in our course. She has encouraged me to excel both professionally and academically. Her guidance has allowed me to feel confident in my work as an academic. She is the only instructor that I have had that has personally told me that they see a potential of a Ph.D. in my future. Her encouragement has allowed me to grow my confidence. I know that she has provided this dedication and taken one-on-one time with my colleagues as well. She sacrifices of her time to benefit her students academically, professionally, and personally. She deserves to be recognized for her efforts. * Even though she will be transitioning to another institution, Dr. Wilson has been a great instructor for two of my classes (I am enrolled for a third class taught by her in the spring). Since my degree is online, the amount of difficulty in learning the material is increased. Dr. Wilson has made distance education easier, informative, and fun. She provides constant feedback and is very positive in her remarks. In addition, she offers her own insight to give her students the most useful information regarding the subject of the class. I highly recommend her as an instructor to anyone!
Jean Wolph Middle and Secondary Education College of Education and Human Development Without Jean, none of us would've survived English Language Arts Methods this semester. He genuinely wanted me and my colleagues to succeed, and I will be a much better social worker thanks to him.
Charles Baker Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work At first, policy was a class that I dreaded going to and completing assignments for. Anna Faul Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work It is my honor and privilege to recommend Dr. Annatjie Faul for a Faculty Favorite award. I first met Dr. Faul in 2007 upon entering the doctoral program at Kent, but her reputation had preceded her by a number of years. While in direct social work practice in the community, I had heard about her gerontology and health research and her development of the Practicum Partnership Program. Then, in my first meeting with her, I knew I had found a very special mentor. She took the time to really understand my needs and goals, encouraging me to apply for an American Cancer Society Grant which, with her help, I was awarded. Had it not been for her support, I would not have had the confidence to apply for this grant. Dr. Faul also taught several of my doctoral classes; both my respect for her and knowledge of the subject matter grew exponentially as a result. She now serves as my dissertation chair and primary mentor, and the amount of time she has given in this selfless role is immeasurable. I found her to be extremely flexible and responsive to individual learning needs and very creative in her use of teaching methodologies, both in and out of the classroom. She is challenging while simultaneously communicating confidence in students' abilities. Dr. Faul's modeling of scholarly social work service, research, and teaching has had a tremendous impact on me personally, motivating my professional development in ways I did not think myself capable. She is a social worker and researcher extraordinaire. She possesses a rare combination of true compassion, professional dedication and drive, intellectual curiosity and amazing intelligence, and she's also a lot of fun to be around. I admire Annatjie and aspire to these qualities. I entrusted this final leg of my doctoral journey to her care, knowing that she would guide me to the finish line. I appreciate the fact that she is as committed to my dissertation topic as I am. Finally, of special note, in my own search for a faculty position in a school of social work, I had three campus visits to top universities which resulted in three job offers. Each time, after giving my colloquium presentation, I had multiple faculty members from each school approach me with questions about who my mentor was. They all communicated being very impressed with the dissertation work that Anna Faul helped me accomplish. * Dr. Faul is committed to serving her community and her students, reflecting the best qualities as a mentor and a professional. She is truly my favorite!

The material was easily understood because she was able to present her material effectively while utilizing wonderful PowerPoint presentations and allowing for the class to get involved. * Dr. Kemp is awesome! I love the fact that she was more concerned with "us" learning than she was about our grades.
Edgardo Mansilla Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work Professor Mansilla was a challenging, yet refreshing, instructor. He encouraged us to write how we truly felt on issues, as opposed to simply writing to appease a professor. He warned that if we did so, be prepared to support our claims. I have applied this advice to my current place of employment, and it has helped to open the floor for discussion at times. I feel privileged to have taken his course (Human Diversity), and I have encouraged others to enroll if they get the opportunity to do so.
Liz Dumbaugh Martin Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work She is a very respectful instructor/professor. She has often respected students' experience, knowledge, participation, and understanding. For instance, I have experienced that some professors or instructors teach to get money directly, and there are professors or instructors who share and give knowledge, skills, and experiences with students with open hearts, minds, and souls. There are professors or instructors who are like Liz Martin. God will bless them to change our community and the world in the future. Your ability will become UofL's legacy, your family's legacy, and the community's legacy in the future. I am thankful to my school's authority, my department, and faculty for giving me this opportunity.
Lynetta Mathis Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work Ms. Mathis is committed to student success. She advocates for her students and always ensures that she makes herself available for student concerns. She prompts students to think critically about the work we do by modeling critical thought, asking questions that inspire critical thought, and responding to questions in a way to cause us to think critically. She is an asset to the Kent School. She has gone above and beyond to deserve this nomination. * I am so thankful to have had a chance to meet Lynetta. She has been the voice in the back of my head telling me not to give up for the past two and a half years. When my mother passed away unexpectedly, right before the start of my senior year, Lynetta, as well as other Kent staff, encouraged me to keep going. It is great to know that someone cares about me and to know that I am not just another student whose tuition helps pay bills. I have so much respect for Lynetta, and I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to meet her.
Patrick McKiernan Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work His use of humor and vast knowledge of substance abuse created an interesting and engaging classroom experience. He actively listens to students, is open to different points of view, and gives thoughtful and valuable feedback.

Susan Rhema Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work She's awesome.
Sharon Sanders Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work Wonderful class experience. * She is an excellent professor. She uses creative teaching techniques to reach her students and creates a productive learning environment. She took time out of her busy schedule to help prepare students for the CSW and really cared about each student's progress in the program. * I would like to nominate Sharon Sanders for a Faculty Favorite Award. I had Professor Sanders for three of my MSSW classes. Professor Sanders went above and beyond to help her students grow and learn as professional social workers, both inside and outside of the classroom. She provided real-world experience and knowledge, which helped me to grasp the concepts taught in her class. Professor Sanders also helped prepare us for our CSW exam, which she did voluntarily and without compensation. My experience as a grad student at U of L was enriched by Professor Sanders, and I will miss having her as a teacher as I graduate from the University in August. However, the knowledge I have gained from her will stay with me in my future professional career.

Carlton Hornung Epidemiology and Population Health School of Public Health and Information Sciences Dr. Hornung inspired me while in the classroom to explore areas in the field of cardiovascular disease that were beyond my immediate knowledge. Being required to present to the class on cardiovascular topics, Dr. Hornung provided his students with immediate feedback and support for a job well done. Dr. Hornung showed up to class each morning with an upbeat attitude which I found contagious and warm, especially for a 9 a.m. class. Dr. Hornung had a way of connecting with each student; he made a point to ask about our individual interests and recognize when potential articles of interest came our way. In addition, he took the time to make outside contacts within the UofL community for us to visit in order to gain first-hand experience while in the field; an opportunity many, if not all, of us may have never had. Dr. Hornung is incredibly knowledgeable about cardiovascular health and instilled in his students a sense that we will go far with our degree; he is a very supportive professor, and this is why I would like to nominate him as my favorite educator of 2011. * Very excellent professor.
