Teaching, Service, Research & Creative ActivityEngaged Scholarship in Action series continues with Signature Partnership discussionSponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Office for Community Engagement, with co-sponsorship by A&S Dean and 6 others, this panel discussion titled “Signature Partnership Initiative: A Forum for Engagement” will be the second program in the Engaged Scholarship in Action series. Brief presentations will be followed by discussion of how interdisciplinary efforts might create more effective collaborations and positive community outcomes. Light lunch served. Panelists: SPHIS Dean Craig Blakely, Anita Barbee (Kent), Laura Rothstein (Law), and David Simpson (A&S-UPA). New NSF policies and proceduresThe National Science Foundation (NSF) added a new funding mechanism for proposers on Grants.gov and FastLane. Also, additional automated compliance checks on proposals will begin in FastLane that could have an impact on NSF submissions via Grants.gov. Proposals received by NSF that are not compliant may be returned without review. For links to the revised NSF Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide and a detailed list of compliance checks, go to Announcements in the Research Office’s Blog.
Federal Grant ComplianceSix Month Effort Reports must be submitted via email to Sponsored Programs Administration - Finance no later than February 16, 2015. Effort Reports may be accessed via University Reports and are listed under Financials: Financials – Department – Effort Reports. Please be sure to review the second page of the Effort Report, which contains important information including definitions and guidance. If you have any questions regarding completion of these reports, please contact your unit business manager or Dana Moorer at 852-6983. Kudos & CongratulationsLuke Buckman receives Provost’s Exemplary Advising AwardCongratulations to Luke Buckman (Assistant Director for Student Programming and Development, University Honors Program) Luke Buckman has been selected as the recipient of the 2014-2015 Provost’s Award for Exemplary Advising in the Professional Advisor category. The student who nominated him as well as the many others who wrote in support of this nomination emphasized the breadth and depth of Luke’s advising work as well as the difference that he has made in their UofL experience and lives. Shiping Hua nominated for International Scholar honorProfessor Shiping Hua, Political Sciences, has been nominated one of the “2014 Ten International Scholars with Valuable Ideas about China.” He is in good company for the honor: Zhiwu Chen, Yale University; Cheng Li, Brookings Institution; 2001 Nobel Prize laureate Joseph Eugene Stiglitz, Columbia University; 2014 Nobel Prize laureate Jean Tirole, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The nomination was publicized by the Chinese magazine People’s Tribune in January 2015. Andrea Olinger finalist for dissertation awardProf. Andrea Olinger, Assistant Professor of English, was one of three finalists for the 2015 CCCC James Berlin Memorial Outstanding Dissertation Award. This award "honors a graduate whose dissertation improves the educational process in composition studies or adds to the field's body of knowledge, through research or scholarly inquiry." Honor awarded to physics student organization 17 years runningUofL’s chapter of the Society for Physics Students’ (SPS) has won the Outstanding Chapter Award for the 17th consecutive time. 4 A&S staff members receive President’s Outstanding Performance AwardCongratulations to our talented and dedicated staff members Luke Buckman (University Honors Program), Annelise Gray (English), Lori Cotter (A&S Dean’s Office), and Charles Nasby (Theatre Arts) for being among this year’s President’s Outstanding Performance Award recipients. They each received a plaque and monetary award at an awards luncheon in their honor this past Friday. More Biology undergraduate student receives fundingKimberly Bencker’s, Biology, Undergraduate Research Scholar Grant proposal entitled, "Kidney gene expression after chronic glyceollin" has been selected for funding by UofL’s Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Innovation. Andrew Zhao was one of 9 invited to speakProf. Jianhua (Andrew) Zhao, Anthropology, was one of nine scholars invited by The Collège d’études mondiales of the Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme to a workshop entitled “The Routes of Luxury” held in Paris in early January. Prof. Zhao presented a paper entitled, “Routes of Luxury: Lessons and Observations from the Chinese Fashion Industry.” Opportunities and Items of NoteVolunteer instructors neededThe Office of Communications and Marketing is looking for volunteers to lead subject-driven sessions during the annual College for a Day program Saturday, May 16. College for a Day is a partnership with Learning for Life and Explorer Clubs, Boys & Girls Club, Louisville Metro Parks, the Mayor’s Office for Youth Development, among others. It is a one-day event that brings several hundred middle and high school students to campus. Volunteers will need to be able to commit either a full-day (8 a.m-4 p.m.) or a half-day (either morning or afternoon) session. Kentucky Women’s Book Festival on Saturday, March 7Author presentations, book sales and signings and a luncheon will give participants a chance to connect over their favorite pastimes: reading, writing and talking about books.
