How to Apply to JCTC

by jdpole01 last modified Oct 29, 2009 01:24 PM

Step 1:  Complete application

Applications can be completed by one of the following methods:

IN PERSON - Come to any JCTC Campus

  • Carrollton Campus - 324 Main Street
  • Downtown Campus - Jefferson Educational Center (JEC) – 200 West Broadway (2nd and Broadway across from the McDonalds).
  • Jefferson Technical Campus - Building B, 727 West Chestnut Street
  • Shelby County Campus - 1361 Frankfort Road
  • Southwest Campus - Administrative Building - 1000 Community College Dr.

ONLINE - You can fill out the Online Application for Admissions  or print out application and mail in ( both options are free).  Please make sure to fill in your home campus (Jefferson Downtown, Southwest, Carrollton, etc. )

Step 2:  Financial Aid

If you have applied for Financial Aid, be sure that you have added Jefferson Community & Technical College’s school code to the list of schools you want your aid information reported to. JCTC’s school code is 006961. Downtown location: JEC Building 4th floor.

If you have not yet filled out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you can Apply for FAFSA online.

Step 3:  Attend orientation

You have two options:

  • Attend an ULtra Orientation Day (sign up for Orientation) and get everything (orientation, testing, advising, registration, and ULtra sign up) done in one day! Space is limited, so please register online.
  • Attend a standard JCTC Orientation and complete the rest of the steps below.  For more information visit JCTC’s Orientation page.

**You will not be able to take the COMPASS exam or register for classes without attending one of these orientations.**

Step 4:  Complete the Compass Assessment Test

This test is to determine which level of classes (English and Math) you must take. There is no charge for this exam. New students will be given information about the Compass Exam at Orientation. Students who have taken the ACT and scored an 18 in English, an 18 in Reading, and a 20 in Math DO NOT have to take the COMPASS exam, so be sure to bring a copy of your test. If your scores on each section are lower than (18 english, 18 reading, 20 math) you will have to take that section of the COMPASS test.

Step 5:  Meet with an Academic Advisor

Once you have attended orientation and taken the COMPASS exam, you can meet with an advisor to register for classes. Tell your advisor that you are an ULtra student and intend to transfer to UofL. During peak registration times, the advising centers on the Downtown and Southwest campuses hold specific walk-in hours or you can make an appointment.

Step 6:  Pay Tuition by Deadline

You must pay your tuition by the deadline, which is a few days before classes begin each semester. You will not receive a bill in the mail, but can access your KCTCS account online. You must pay in full, make arrangements to pay by the deadline, or set up a payment plan. Failure to pay by the deadline can result in being dropped from classes.

Step 7:  CONTACT THE ULtra OFFICE

If you intend to transfer to the University of Louisville, you should meet an ULtra advisor to make sure you are taking the correct classes for transfer into your UofL major and get information on the transfer process!

  • JCTC Downtown: ULtra is located on the 9th floor of the JEC Building. Our hours are Monday through Thursday 9:00am – 5:00pm.  A staff member is generally available for student walk-ins on a first come basis or you can call for an appointment at (502) 213-4538.
  • JCTC Southwest: ULtra is located in the CREW Center in the Student Community Center Rm 102 and is open Monday and Tuesday 9:00am – 5:00pm.  Call (502) 213-7257 for an appointment.
  • JCTC Shelbyville: An ULtra representative is on site on selected Thursdays of every month from 9:00am – 5:00pm in the Advising Center. Please see ULtra calender for semester schedule.
