Mary Thorpe is the Program Director focused on the day-to-day program operation and the execution of specific educational and strategic objectives defined for both the Upward Bound and Youth Toward Excellence Programs. She is a native of Clinton, Kentucky.

Miss Thorpe began her tenure working with the University of Louisville at the conclusion of her freshman year in 1980 as a Resident Counselor with the Upward Bound Program. Miss Thorpe worked in this capacity until she completed her undergraduate degree curriculum at the University of Louisville in 1984. Miss Thorpe temporarily parted with the University but returned as the full-time Academic Advisor during the fall of 1986. She worked in this capacity for 13 years before taking the helm as Program Director in May of 1999.

Prior to joining the Upward Bound Program as a full-time staff person in 1986, Miss Thorpe spent two (2) years at the Charles L. Shedd School of Dyslexia in Mayfield, Kentucky. She served in a multi-faceted capacity with responsibilities as business manager, computer teacher, and fund-raiser.

Miss Thorpe received a baccalaureate degree in Business Administration and a Master of Education degree in Community and Vocational Counseling, both, from the University of Louisville.

Candice Johnson is an Academic Advisor for the Upward Bound Program.  Her duties involve recruitment and facilitation of the academic endeavors of Jefferson County high school youth.  She is a native of Louisville, Kentucky.

Miss Johnson previously worked as a Youth Counselor with the Educational Talent Search Program.  She currently serves as Service Member-At-Large for the Kentucky Association for Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (KAEOPP).

Miss Johnson graduated from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations and Communication Studies.  She hopes to further her education by obtaining her Master's Degree.

Involvements:  Bates Community Development Corporation and Louisville Alumnae Chapter - Delta Sigma Theta.

Allen, Kenneth

Kenneth Allen is the Program Coordinator Sr. focused on financial administration and resource management. He serves as unit business manager, human resource manager, budget administrator, logistics coordinator, and information technology generalist for the Program. He is a native of Louisville, Kentucky.

Mr. Allen is a former student participant of the U of L Upward Bound Program. Mr. Allen brings operations expertise from prior employment and partnerships in the private sector. Prior to joining the Upward Bound Program as a full-time staff member, Mr. Allen was a Project Manager and Systems Engineer with AT&T Business where he was responsible for the regional upgrade and installation of a secure computerized business information network for the U.S. federal government. Prior to AT&T Business, Mr. Allen was a Systems Engineer / Network Installation Analyst with Distributed Systems Installations at Humana Inc. where he was responsible for the electronic deployment of software, assisting with the Year 2000 (Y2K) preparation effort, and other strategic business activities in information technology.

Mr. Allen currently holds two (2) prestigious Information Systems / Information Technology (IS/IT) industry certifications - Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE, 1997) and Certified Novell Engineer (CNE, 1999).

Thompson, Stacey

Stacey Thompson is the Outreach Counselor for both the Upward Bound and Youth Toward Excellence Programs. Her primary duties involve the recruitment of middle and high school student participants and aiding eighth (8th) grade students in their transition from middle to high school. She is a native of Lexington, Kentucky.

Miss Thompson is an alumnus of the Lexington Community College Upward Bound Program. Miss Thompson began work with the University of Louisville Upward Bound Program during the Summer of 1999 as a Resident Counselor. Prior to joining the Upward Bound Program as a full-time staff person, Miss Thompson worked with the Office of Admissions at the University of Louisville as a Student Coordinator for Undergraduate Students Helping to Recruit (USHR). USHR was responsible for assisting with the University recruitment of minority students.

Miss Thompson received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Louisville in Communication. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in College Student Personnel Services from the University College of Education and Human Development. She also serves as a C.O.N.E.C.T. peer student mentor assisting new University freshmen with their transition from high school to college.

Involvements: Angels Organization, Boys & Girls Club (volunteer), Black Achievers, Walnut Street Baptist Church Day Care.

Combs, Colby

Colby Combs is an Academic Advisor for the Upward Bound Program.  His duties involve recruitment and facilitation of the academic endeavors of Jefferson County high school youth.  Mr. Combs’ primary focus is on students that attend Shawnee High School and Valley Traditional High School, however, he is instrumental in the development of programs which benefit all of the Program’s student participants.  He is a native of Lexington, Kentucky.

Mr. Combs received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Louisville in Justice Administration.  Prior to graduating from his academic program, Mr. Combs served with the Programs as a student assistant, an academic tutor, and a residence counselor for the Upward Bound and Youth Toward Excellence Programs.  He is currently researching a post-graduate field of study.
