Applications are invited from University of Louisville students with an interest in German culture and language for study at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Louisville's Sister City in Germany, Mainz. Applications may come from any academic discipline. Scholarship recipients are expected to return to the University of Louisville to resume their studies. The scholarship recipient will spend two semesters studying in Mainz. All classes are conducted in German.
Applicants may take any courses at the Johannes Gutenberg University for which he or she qualifies, subject to course prerequisites. General information on the Johannes Gutenberg University and course listings are available at the International Center and at http://www.uni-mainz.de/eng/.
Applicants must have completed thirty semester hours of college courses with a grade point average of 3.0 or better at the time of the award. They must also have completed courses in German through the intermediate level with a grade point average of at least 3.2, or have commensurate competence.
The scholarship period is for ten months (October through July). The scholarship provides 4,090 euros for the entire ten months; i.e. 409 euros per month. The minimum monthly living expenses in Germany for a student (dormitory, meals) are approximately 122 euros/month. Scholarship recipients are expected to provide an additional $4,000 dollars out of their own funds to supplement the ten-month scholarship. Mainz exchange scholarship recipients are not charged tuition fees for their attendance of Johannes Gutenberg University. The scholarship recipient must arrange and pay for transportation to and from Mainz.
The designated Mainz exchange student are also eligible for an optional scholarship (covering all expenses of this separate program) to the Johannes Gutenberg University Internationaler Sommerkurs. The Sommerkurs includes one month of intensive German language training in Mainz (mid-July to mid-August) followed by a one-week study trip to Berlin. Students are responsible for their own expenses from the conclusion of the Internationaler Sommerkurs until October 1. Students should in any case plan to arrive in Mainz by early October to acclimate themselves before classes begin.

Two letters of recommendation. At least one letter must be from a professor of German. The other may be from an employer.
A 750 word statement of purpose that outlines the proposed course of study, the applicant's qualifications, as well as educational objectives to be achieved by studying in Germany. In addressing his or her qualifications, the applicant should include a discussion of career goals, work experience, special skills or licenses, foreign language proficiency and foreign and domestic travel experience.
The period of study in Germany should contribute to the field of study or career that the applicant intends to pursue upon his or her return. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to conduct themselves in both interpersonal academic situations to the credit of the University of Louisville/Sister Cities of Louisville and the United States. Upon return to Louisville, the scholarship recipient must write a final report on the study year and provide up to twenty hours of service as a resource person for programs related to Mainz and Germany at the University or with Sister Cities of Louisville.
