Professor of Communications
College of Arts and Sciences
Ralph Merkel's students have high praise for his teaching style and personality. He's been called the "coolest teacher I ever had in college" and the "best professor ever" among other accolades. But one student who nominated him for a Faculty Favorite summed it up quite simply: "One word, Awesome."
Merkel is one of four Faculty Favorites for the 2012-13 school year. The communication professor has been a faculty member in the College of Arts and Sciences for 26 years, teaching Video Communication, Advanced Video Communication, Online Journalism, Business Journalism, Campus Media and News writing. He is the the advisor to the Cardinal student newspaper and the faculty director of the ESPNU Campus Connection video crews. Outside the classroom, he is the executive producer of "Kentucky Health," a weekly program airing on KET.
His approachability and desire to provide encouragement, as well as his hands-on teaching style ranked high among his student nominators. Merkel"s ability to lead his students to success in the classroom and the real world is just one reason his students say "Ralph Merkel is the bee's knees."
