The Latin American and Latino Studies Program expresses heartfelt gratitude for Ben Ruiz's exceptional contribution of over 20 years. His dedication significantly raised the profile of our program and fostered strong connections with the community. His enduring commitment to promoting cultural understanding and community engagement has left an indelible mark on our institution, shaping the way we approach education and outreach. We are profoundly grateful for the legacy he leaves behind and the positive impact he has had on both our program and the broader community.
Born on July 11, 1941, in Mexico City, Mexico, and becoming a U.S. citizen in 2006, Ben Ruiz, a visionary leader and co-founder of the Kentucky Derby Festival's Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, has left an indelible mark on our community. As the founder, principal partner, CEO & Creative Director of Adhawks, LLC, a multicultural marketing communication and PR agency, Ben's influence extended far beyond his professional achievements.
Among his numerous accomplishments, Ben was recognized as one of Insider Louisville's Top 100 Influencers in Marketing & Advertising and received the 2016 Service For Peace "ManUp Community Leader" Award. He was also honored with the Lyman T. Johnson Distinguished Leadership Award in 2014 and received the National Oracle Volunteer of the Year and Lifetime Service Award for the Corn Island Storytelling Festival. Notably appointed as a Kentucky Colonel in 1994, Ben contributed significantly to both the professional and cultural landscape.
In the realm of professional contributions, Ben founded Adhawks, LLC, serving prestigious clients such as GE, Toyota Motor Manufacturing KY, Fifth Third Bank, LG&E, Presbyterian Church USA, Brown-Forman, and Humana. His achievements include receiving a national CLIO award and multiple local Louie creative advertising awards. Ben actively served on various community organizations' boards, including The Mayor's Louisville Latino Council, GLI's Hispanic Latino Business Council, and more.
As part of his educational legacy, Ben taught Graphic Design and Advertising Copywriting as Adjunct Faculty at institutions like Brown Mackie College, Webster College, Ivy Tech Indiana, and the University of Louisville.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Ben was deeply involved in family and community activities. He co-founded the Kentucky Derby Festival's Cinco De Mayo at 4th St Live Fiesta and the 100 Dreamers El Sueño Centenario Kentucky Latino Scholarship Fund. Actively engaged in various community organizations and committees, Ben contributed significantly to the betterment of Louisville.
In his last major contribution, Ben orchestrated the 2022 celebration of the 4th Street Live Day of the Dead, a cultural event attended by Louisville's Mayor, Greg Fisher. His commitment to cultural celebrations and community engagement will be remembered and cherished.
