We're glad you're considering applying to the program in Health Care Ethics at the University of Louisville. Please familiarize yourself with the requirements listed here and with those of the Graduate Admissions Office. Feel free to contact the Administrative Assistant with any questions.
Application Deadlines
- Fall semester with consideration for Graduate Assistantship: January 15th
- Summer and nonfunded Fall applications: May 15th
- Spring semester and dual degree candidates: November 15th
Application Materials & Instructions
Every applicant must submit the following material to the Graduate Admissions Office:
- Application (online version preferred since it allows you to upload all other required materials.)
- Application fee
- Transcripts from all previous academic work
- Two recent letters of recommendation from those familiar with the applicant's academic work or life long learning. Letters should speak to the applicant's ability to complete graduate level education. Discursive letters from previous professors preferred.
- Curriculum vitae or resume
- Personal statement, which should address the question: "Why have you decided to pursue a concentration in Health Care Ethics?" The personal statement should be between 2 and 4 double spaced pages (500 - 1000 words).
- Writing Sample. The writing sample should be a substantial, polished, persuasive paper that demonstrates the applicant's ability to do high-level undergraduate research. Writing sample requirements are waved for applicants who have already been accepted into a medical or PhD program.
Standardized tests (e.g. GRE, LSAT, MCAT) are not required but may be submitted at the applicant's discretion.
Additionally, we may request additional materials as required. For example, current employees of the university are expected to provide a letter of support from their direct supervisor.

Funding: Assistantships and Financial Aid
Please visit the Financial Aid page for more details about deadlines and the process of applying for aid. The Graduate School also maintains a page listing support opportunities for graduate students.
In addition, for those applying by the January 15th deadline (including those applying for dual degrees in the November application pool) we offer consideration for our Graduate Assistantship. GAs work up to 20 hours per week for the department, helping both with administrative tasks and with faculty research and projects. In exchange, students receive full tuition waivers, health insurance, and a $15,000 stipend paid over 10 months. Awards are competitive, with our nominations going to the best candidates in our current application pool. No additional application materials need to be submitted, but please communicate your interest to our Administrative Assistant when you apply.
