Health Care Ethics Graduate Certificate

1-Year Graduate Certificate in Health Care Ethics

About

Health care in the twenty-first century faces a series of ethical challenges arising from unprecedented advances in the medical sciences, combined with radical cultural and organizational change. The big business of health care can bring issues of social difference and injustice directly to our attention in the lives of individual patients.

The 1-year Health Care Ethics Certificate is part of the 2-year MA Program in Health Care Ethics  that boasts a nationally unique focus on issues of social justice and the importance of race, gender, class, sexuality, religion, and culture on health and health care.

This certificate increases the skills-base of health care professionals and others by providing the resources of practical bioethics as a partner to the sciences in responding to the challenges of twenty-first century health and social care.

The Graduate Certificate in Health Care Ethics is an interdisciplinary program of 15 credit hours of graduate level coursework drawn primarily from core courses already offered for the M.A.

Curriculum

Through 3 courses in core Health Care Ethics classes and 2 electives, students will be broadly and deeply educated in health care ethics, from the history of the discipline to its current controversies, and from structural challenges of justice, equity, and discrimination to the bedside dilemmas of clinical ethics.

Elective courses can be taken from a long list of options in Pan-African Studies; Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; Anthropology; Sociology; Law; Public Health; and Social Work. Students with particular interests may work with their advisor to develop an individualized suite of electives that count toward the degree.
