Jarrett Jones
Sport: Swimming
Major: Mathematics
Aside from a continuing athletic career, what do you want to do/be when you graduate?
As of right now, I'm planning on working as an actuary when I graduate. In addition, I'd really like to get into coaching swimming, since that's something I'm pretty passionate about.
What is it that drew you to your major?
I've always really enjoyed mathematics and numbers, specifically probability and statistics. With my major, I have the opportunity to learn about some of the applications of statistics in the real world, as well as opening the door to other financial and economic-related opportunities.
If you were to recommend your major to someone, what would you say about it?
Make sure you stay on top of it! It's pretty demanding and a lot of work, so you definitely can't let yourself fall too far behind. That being said, it's really rewarding once you practice enough and really start to figure out what you're doing.
What has been your favorite college course that you have taken thus far? Why?
My favorite course that I've taken would probably be Math 570, Foundations of Actuarial Science. The course was run with the primary focus being to prepare students for the actuarial P exam. I really enjoyed how everything we did had a singular purpose with one goal in mind: to help prepare us to pass the exam.
What is something you get excited or passionate about?
I’m a pretty passionate Boston sports fan. With this recent Super Bowl win, Boston sports have won 12 championships since I’ve been born…so almost every year gives me something to get excited about! Everybody in my family (and almost everybody else back home) are huge sports fans, so a lot of it comes from the way I was raised.
When you're not practicing/training or studying, what do you like to do?
I really enjoy hanging out with my friends and teammates outside of the classroom or the pool. I think that one of the coolest things about being a student-athlete here at UofL is the family away from home that I've become a part of here. I love when I get the chance to just relax and have fun with my friends.
Who is your role model, and why?
My biggest role models would definitely be my parents. They've set such a great example for me in terms of how they always put family before anything else and the support that they've given me every step of the way.
What's your favorite thing about Louisville? Favorite thing about UofL? Why?
My favorite thing about Louisville and UofL would just be the people I've met here. I think it's really cool how there are so many different people from all around the world that are all here for the same reason. Interacting with the people I've met and the relationships I've built are a huge part of what I do on a daily basis, and this is the best place for that.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
Favorite spot on campus would probably be TACE (Thornton's Academic Center of Excellence). I think it's technically right off campus, but TACE is the best place to study, hang out, or grab some food. We have team dinners on Tuesday and Thursday nights, so it's always fun to have everybody together at the end of the day. Also, Friday brunches are the best.
What's the best advice you've ever received?
Best advice I've ever received: "Be a Patriots fan."
What is one thing your classmates and teammates might not know about you?
I'm a pretty big Star Wars fan. Most people probably know that, though. Movies, shows, games, books, all of it's awesome.
Which three people (living or dead) would you invite to dinner and why?
Tom Brady, because he's the GOAT. Ewan McGregor, because he's also the GOAT. And probably my grandma, because she's pretty cool too.
