Online Classroom Reading Endorsement (P-12)

The classroom reading endorsement (P-12) online program is designed for certified Kentucky teachers who want to boost their specialized expertise or credentials and work toward a master’s degree or Rank I.

Offered by the College of Education at the University of Louisville, the classroom reading endorsement focuses on effective reading and writing instruction, and better understanding of working with P-12 students of varying abilities. By delivering an enriched approach to literacy, this program prepares you to create learning opportunities in your classroom that empower students to tackle and overcome the challenges of reading and writing in our modern society.

Students enrolled solely in the non-degree endorsement program are not eligible for federal aid. Tuition rate does not include costs associated with a specific course or program, such as textbooks. Tuition and fees are subject to change at any time without prior notice.

Outcomes

Note: Although admission is granted on a rolling basis throughout the year, applicants are encouraged to work on and submit their complete application well in advance of the preferred deadline, as obtaining transcripts, test scores and other materials may take more time. Applications submitted or completed after the preferred deadline will be considered on a case-by-case basis for the next available start/term.

  2. Submit signed code of ethics/technology statement, uploaded within the online application
  3. Submit $65 non-refundable application fee
  4. Submit official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree earned from a regionally accredited institution
  • Valid Kentucky Initial Teaching Certification or statement of eligibility for candidates outside Kentucky
  • Minimum 2.75 cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) on 4.0 scale; minimum 3.0 GPA for graduate work

Out-of-state Applicants

Certified teachers outside Kentucky should be advised that we cannot guarantee the program will meet licensure, salary, advancement or other requirements in their state. As part of the admission process, we require a written statement confirming their interest in the program for personal development and that they understand the program is designed to meet Kentucky certification requirements only. The online classroom reading endorsement is a 15 credit hour program that can be completed over a year’s progression with 2 courses taken in the fall semester, 2 in the spring semester and 1 over the summer term.

The 5 required courses are offered in the order listed below. Courses are taught 100% online, with some courses accessed via webcam in interactive, synchronous sessions beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET or later, on specific weekdays.

Sample Course Descriptions


EDAP 610: Literacy Research and Theory
An advanced course in literacy, providing an intense analysis of current research and theories in the strategies of teaching literacy at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Course Purpose:
This course is designed to provide the foundations for literacy instruction; that is, it will provide teachers of all grade levels with knowledge of current literacy research as well as past literacy research and the ability to use this research in designing, implementing, and evaluating strategies for literacy learning. For some students, this course will serve as an introduction to the field of literacy, while for others it may be more of a review. For this reason, the course will allow individuals to read/study in their area of interest.


EDAP 636: Advanced Reading Methods P-12
This course addresses knowledge and implementation of research-based reading methods appropriate for preschool through secondary students, with an emphasis on developing skillful and strategic lifelong readers. Concepts from the course will be applied in P-12 through required field experiences.

Course Purpose:
This course is designed for in-service teachers to refine their literacy teaching knowledge and skill. The focus will be on strategies to teach foundational reading concepts, with special emphasis on comprehension instruction.


EDAP 615: Measurement and Diagnosis of Literacy
An introduction to diagnostic concepts in reading, with an emphasis on screening instruments, materials, and tutoring procedures. Prerequisite: EDAP 610.

Course Purpose:
This course is designed for in-service teachers to refine their literacy teaching knowledge and skill. The focus will be on assessment and diagnosis of literacy knowledge and difficulties.


EDAP 678: Language Knowledge and Acquisition
Addresses teacher mastery of structure of the English language and alphabetic writing system, and knowledge of language acquisition to help diverse learners learn to read and write.

Course Purpose:
This course is designed to prepare in-service teachers to provide theoretically sound literacy instruction that supports the diverse needs of readers and writers through grade 12. The course will focus on the principles of language acquisition and mastery of structural language elements (i.e., phonemes, syllables, morphemes), the way they are represented in print, and how children learn them within a comprehensive literacy environment.


EDAP 642: Literacy Learning and Cultural Differences
Explores the current knowledge base and theoretical frameworks used to explain differential achievement rates between students of diverse cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds.

Course Purpose:
This course will examine assumptions considering students, race, class, and culture and students will study major concepts (racism, classism, etc.) to explore multiple perspectives. The course will extend the principles of teaching and learning to include a new perspective on teaching students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. A major focus of the course will be to prepare P-12 classroom teachers for working effectively with diverse student populations in literacy learning using culturally responsive instructional practices.

    • Why do I need to complete the application for the master’s or Rank 1 program? I’m interested only in the endorsement.

      Due to the way the system is set up, you will need to complete your application as if applying to either a master’s degree or Rank I program. From there, you will select the endorsement of your choice.

    • Can I receive federal aid while pursuing this teaching endorsement?

      Unfortunately, federal aid is not available to students enrolled solely in the endorsement program. However, students also enrolled in a master’s degree program are eligible to receive financial aid. Visit the financial aid & tuition page for more information.

    • How does the CRE endorsement get attached to my teaching license after graduation?

      In order to add the P-12 Classroom Reading Endorsement to your teaching license, you have to pass a Praxis test. To find out more information or select the correct Praxis test for Kentucky, access the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) Praxis Test website at http://www.ets.org/praxis/ky/requirements.
