Loan Repayment Assistance Program for Law Alumni in Public Service
Louis D. Brandeis School of Law is pleased to announce the Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) to ease the educational debt burden for its recent graduates who are engaged in full-time public service employment. In keeping with University of Louisville’s tradition of encouraging students to engage in community service to others needing legal guidance, LRAP allows the Law School to provide significant support to our alumni with high educational debt burdens to fulfill their aspirations for public interest careers. J.D. graduates of the University of Louisville between May 2015 and May 2017 may apply for LRAP benefits.

Eligibility for assistance will be based on the applicant’s status in calendar year 2018.
Any J.D. graduate of the University of Louisville between May 2015 and May 2017 may apply. A graduate may receive benefits for up to three calendar years. A graduate seeking LRAP benefits for more than one year must apply and establish eligibility annually.
An awardee must be employed full-time (35 hours per week or more) for at least 9 months of 2018 in a law-related capacity:
- By an employer that is a governmental entity, excluding judicial clerks but including staff attorneys for a Kentucky court; OR
- By an NGO, an intergovernmental organization (e.g. NATO, the United Nations or the World Bank) or a not-for-profit corporation exempt from taxation pursuant to Section 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code whose proclaimed purpose is to serve, represent or advocate on behalf of indigent persons, disadvantaged groups or inadequately protected interests.
No applicant who is employed in any capacity (either part-time or full-time) by the University of Louisville shall be eligible for LRAP assistance for the months (s)he was employed by the University of Louisville.
If your marital status on your 2017 federal income tax return was Single, your gross income from all sources for tax year 2017 cannot have exceeded $60,000, to which an additional $20,000 may be added for each dependent.
If your marital status on your 2017 federal income tax return was Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately, the couple’s gross income from all sources for tax year 2017 cannot have exceeded $100,000, to which an additional $20,000 may be added for each dependent of either or both spouses.
Continuing eligibility for loan repayment assistance, up to three (3) years, shall be determined according to the terms of the promissory note and any other documentation as may be necessary in individual cases.
Alumni applying for LRAP should consider its compatibility with other loan forgiveness programs for which they may eligible.
An awardee’s total educational indebtedness must exceed $65,000, based on outstanding principal balances as of August 1, 2018. Both undergraduate and graduate higher education loans will be considered in determining total indebtedness.
Assistance will be in the form of a loan from the University of Louisville for educational debt. Awardees will execute a promissory note in a form approved by the University of Louisville. The LRAP loan will be canceled when an awardee submits for review complete copies of executed 2018 federal income tax returns and other required documents, including those required pursuant to the terms of the promissory note, verifying LRAP eligibility for 2019.
The proceeds of the LRAP loan will be disbursed to repay any outstanding loans the awardee has with one lender from the list of federally guaranteed, governmental and private lenders submitted as part of the awardee’s LRAP application. All internal (Perkins) loans held or administered by the University of Louisville must be current before your loan application can be processed.
If selected as a University of Louisville LRAP award recipient, we recommend contacting your lender(s) to find out if they are willing to apply your award to current payments, instead of applying it as a one-time lump sum payment of loan principal.
Eligibility will be determined by the University of Louisville LRAP Committee. The LRAP Committee will review applications and documentation and will recommend to the Dean issuance of awards and loan cancellations.
Deadlines and Timetable:
- All application materials must be received by January 18, 2019. No late applications will be accepted.
- LRAP awardees will be selected by February 15, 2019.
- Acceptance of award and return of executed promissory note must be received by March 15, 2019.
- Disbursement of LRAP loan proceeds will be made after May 1, 2019.
- Employment Recertification letter and form will be emailed by August 2, 2019.
- Employment Recertification form must be received by September 6, 2019.
- If qualified employment is recertified, the loan promissory note(s) will be canceled.
- If qualified employment is not certified, repayment of the loan will begin October 1, 2019.
Compliance with all deadlines is mandatory.
A complete application package must be submitted by January 18, 2019 and includes:
- Application Form documenting biographical information, employment status and educational indebtedness.
- Most recent statement for each outstanding education loan, irrespective of its repayment status.
- Completed Employment Certification(s).
- A current resume.
A Personal Statement, not exceeding 750 words in 12 point or higher font. The statement should
- describe how your current job duties demonstrate your commitment to public service and meet the criteria for Qualifying Employment;
- describe past employment and past and current activities demonstrating your commitment to public service;
- explain what you will do with the money that otherwise would have gone to loan repayment if you receive an award.
- Individual federal income tax return(s), including all attachments and schedules, for tax year 2017 for the applicant and the applicant’s spouse if applicant was married (filing jointly or separately) during that tax year.
Other documentation may be required based on individual circumstances. Keep a copy of all LRAP materials for your records.
Submit Your Application
Application materials must be submitted electronically. Paper or fax submissions will not be accepted.
If you are selected to receive LRAP assistance, you must indicate acceptance of the award and submit the executed promissory note and any additional, required documentation by March 15, 2019.
No representations as to the tax consequences of LRAP awards are made or intended. Applicants and awardees should consult an appropriate tax advisor for an opinion as to tax consequences of an award.
