Abstract: How did the universe go from the Big Bang to having stars and galaxies? And what’s up with all this dark matter and dark energy? Come learn about what we think we know about the early universe, and what we still have left discover.

Abstract: With the start of the space program a new area began for astronomical observations. The James Webb Space Telescope, expected to launch in 2018, will be latest in a long line of successful NASA space observatories. It will provide astronomers with unprecedented views of the Universe in the infrared and reveal information about the very first galaxies. We will take a look at the history and future of and explore the important achievements of space observations.

Speaker: Christopher Graney

Abstract: Once upon a time we had a very different idea about how the Earth was structured than we do today. It took Christopher Columbus to upset that idea. His encountering the Americas both paved the way for Copernicus to envision an Earth that turned, and removed a little supernatural from the world.

Abstract: The two-story tall flagship spacecraft Cassini finished its 13-year, 293-orbit tour of Saturn in a blaze of glory on September 15, 2017, becoming the first probe into the atmosphere. A recap of the mission’s top scientific discoveries and its spectacular final few months will be presented.

Speaker: Benne Holwerda, University of Louisville

Abstract: The ingredients for a galaxy are stars, gas, and lastly dust. The dust is a key ingredient if we want to understand the light from galaxies. Like the smog from cars, it reddens and obscures stars. One way to find out where interstellar dust resides in galaxies is to use an accidental partial overlap of two galaxies. The background galaxy acts as a light table for the foreground galaxy, revealing exactly where dust is in the closer galaxy.
