Abstract: The ingredients for a galaxy are stars, gas, and lastly dust. The dust is a key ingredient if we want to understand the light from galaxies. Like the smog from cars, it reddens and obscures stars. One way to find out where interstellar dust resides in galaxies is to use an accidental partial overlap of two galaxies. The background galaxy acts as a light table for the foreground galaxy, revealing exactly where dust is in the closer galaxy.
