This week-long conference is open to all Kentucky social studies teachers and will consider the issue of America’s so-called “manifest destiny.” Sessions will cover the ideological background of the concept of manifest destiny, and trace examples from the nineteenth century through present day. The United States has long viewed itself as a nation with a unique place in human history, occupying the role of both maintaining and promoting the values and possibilities of human liberty. However, the goal of maintaining a free and responsible polity can, on occasion, be at odds with the political goals associated with a specific foreign policy or efforts at national growth.

Conference Readings include The Federalist Papers, On Liberty and Order, The Webster/Hayne Debate on the Nature of the Union and On Liberty, Society and Politics: The Essential Essays of William Graham Sumner, among others.

The 2010 Summer Teacher Institute is a co-sponsored program with Liberty Fund, Inc. As such, there is a heavy emphasis on group discussion. Selected participants are required to have completed approximately 375 pages of reading and to come prepared to discuss and question these readings with their fellow teachers and discussion leaders. The success of the Institute will hinge on each teacher's participation in the discussions.
